There is no question that Rodgers is the more established passer, but I learned with Alex that fans need to accept whatever we get. Alex was a Niner, so I supported him till the end (even during the contentious months when Kap took over, & we argued over who was best for the team). Rodgers would have been my pick, but I tried to have faith in the front office.

ok.

didn't know back in 2005 who was the better prospect? i just knew we needed to draft a QB, that either could be BPA. back then there WERE a few fans saying we shouldn't go QB.

i also recall most articles were saying Aaron was more 'NFL ready', but Alex had more intangibles?

Jason La Canfora:

How's this for a shocker: Several execs picking early in round 1 believe OAK will take corner DJ Hayden 3rd overall if they keep the pick

Mark me down as skeptical.

Why? Because it would be a smart move by the Raiders or a stupid move?

I still don't think the 49ers made the wrong choice. In fact everything I've seen points towards Rodgers being even worse for the 49ers than Smith was... he was so bad his first two years in Green Bay that their fans considered him a bust. Plus his douchey attitude would have possibly steered him towards a Ryan Leaf type of meltdown when Rodgers took the blame for the crappy coordinators and receivers in SF.

If you want to argue finished products, don't waste your time with me because that argument is complete BS and 100% invalid. Rodgers proved that he needed 3 years to get ready and that he could take over for a team that just won 13 games... and then win 6 games with that team. Nowhere does that give a strong case that he could have stepped in as a rookie after a few months training with a team that just won 2 games and then be successful. Since 2008 GB has had very good WRs, and since 2005 the 49ers have not, pretty much only VD and Crabs recently.

The biggest reason I won't recognize the finished products argument is our very own Steve Young. In the worst possible situation (Tampa) he was awful and heading towards bust status, in the best possible situation (SF) he was a HOF QB. If you use the career paths of Smith and Rodgers, to me it is fair to say Smith's time with the 49ers was a lot like Young's time with the Bucs and Rodgers time with GB was a lot like Young's time with the 49ers. Situation completely makes a difference for a QB. I feel like Smith's turnaround with Harbaugh also proves this point, situation matters.

I see Deion Sanders showed up as his NFL Draft Commercial character. I wonder how far the NFL is going to take this, are they going to fake draft him somewhere?

no question situation matters.

yes, no way to quantify what Rodgers would've done in SF, we can only opine. my opinion is he would've done better even if a LITTLE better. your opinion is he would've done worse, no problem.

don't know if he was a finished product or not? just wrote what i recall from the 2005 draft hype.

wasn't the big reason Rodgers sat three years.......was Favre?

Maiocco seems to think we're trading up for Tavon Austin.

He was also saying that Richardson, Star and Floyd combined for 12 sacks and have questions about how much impact they would have on 3rd down.

good it is counting down, but why be nervous?

i'm not that interested till about the 13th pick on? just to see if the 49ers trade up?

for me, doesn't matter what other teams do including the Cardinals and Rams. obviously, both are in better slots and hence, will get better prospects. no sense getting all worked up over who they draft.

Both Richardson/Floyd will be monsters on 3rd down. I'd love either of them on this team. Austin too.

The main reason, yes. I think Favre in 2005 is also why a lot of Packer fans started wondering if Rodgers was a bust too. What did he have like 29 INTs that year? A lot of their fans were wondering why their 1st round pick couldn't get on the field before the pick master.

By the way, what I meant by finished product was Rodgers today vs Smith today. When you take that approach it is a no-brainer, the 49ers blew it. I don't like that argument because it ignores all of the things things that were drastically different about their paths as NFL QBs.

I sometimes marvel at how lucky Rodgers was that everything fell into place for him both on the field and off... he didn't have to deal with the crushing pressure of living up to Brett Favre because Brett got just about the entire fanbase to hate him and not even want to talk about him with his ugly divorce from GB. With the 49ers, Rodgers would have had to deal with that crushing pressure of Montana and Young.

Tavon Austin - WR - Player

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Rams are discussing a trade with the Bills, targeting West Virginia's Tavon Austin.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen mentioned something similar minutes ago. The 16-to-8 climb would be steep for St. Louis, likely costing the Rams at least their second-round pick (No. 46) and possibly a late-rounder, too. GM Les Snead should go get Austin if he believes he's a game-changer, but that's a ton of compensation for a 5-foot-9, 174-pound football player, regardless of how elusive Austin is.

There's not a defense in the NFL where I would endorse taking him that high. I wouldn't come close to banking on it going down that way. The fact that that many people believe it's a possibility does have me thinking how that talk started, though. Still, I wouldn't put that in my 5-10 most likely scenarios.
