Don't worry they got a guy who has as many mvps.

Harper's young, the future. But, I should have added, the Harper stuff is mostly speculation by ESPN guys. There's still hope. Maybe we got McCutchen as a backup with top trade value.

Another rumor: A person with knowledge of the situation used the phrase “getting closer’’ to describe the discussions between J.A. Happ and the Phillies.

He's been a 2 WAR player the past two seasons.
It's roughly $5-8M per WAR and his valuation was for 3/44.
3/50 might be a slight overpay, but doesn't he instantly become our most productive outfielder?

If we are done, I'm skeptical.
But I would have to think that more trades/signings are on the way....

I'm sure they'll bring in some pitching but this is really looking like a dud compared to what they were advertising.

There is a rumor that the Phillies want 3rd baseman Moustakas if they can trade Franco. Moustakas is a lifetime .251 hitter with a poor on base percentage. Franco is younger and has about the same power. Franco hit .271 last year. I do not understand the mind of Klentak.

I am not sure why this FO can't land a big name FA when they become available. What the hell are they doing? WE start out as an almost sure thing, done deal, type of an approach and then for sure, time goes on and things just fizzle right out just like this idiot manager we have and his so-called baseball team.

My newest feelings on Harper and Machado have changed my mind. I think the Phillies can get by without either one of them. No contract should ever go beyond 5 years. Paying 30-40 million per year to one player is waste of resources.
Instead I would focus on the entire team and spread the money around. I think paying an ace pitcher is ok though.
Our current infield looks strong in my opinion. We can make a few more signings to fill other needs and still have money
to trade for a big name at the all star break when they become available.

I agree. Use the resources to get the best player in baseball, Mike Trout! Go get some pitching, and use some of those young players in the minors to pry Mike Trout loose from the Angels. He would make the Phillies instant contenders yearly.

Hopefully he doesn't end up signing a long term deal with the angels.

Doubtful. The Angels have been around .500 ball the last two years. They can get some strong trade pieces in return for Trout.

It's the team he has been with and seems to like the organization and the city. Plus they have big pockets. The Phillies have the advantages of being the home town and hopefully a brighter future.

banking on a guy becoming a FA doesn't seem like the best strategy. he'll be 3 years older than these two guys at the time and based off the contracts they get his could be even further in years and dollars.

if they can get these guys, go for it. phillies have money, I would hope this wouldn't preclude them from trying to get more pitching in the future.

Rumors say that the Yanks are offering less money for Machado than the Phillies. So it depends on whether Machado
is willing to take less and play for the yanks!

With Puig just traded to Cincy, the Dodgers have made room for Harper, if they want him. With the load of money the Phils have, a superstar like Harper is mandatory, especially after the sad 2018 hitting performance of the team. What’s wrong with you guys? It’s about winning.

After 10 years of wishing and hoping for another Series appearance, let’s put the pedal to the freakin Ferrari metal instead of being dumb and Volkswagen cheap. It’s all in your hands, FO!

Damn, I don’t agree with that. What changed your attitude? Don’t you want to watch Harper kick NL butt for the Phils next year at CBP, or watch him and the Dodgers come in and make the Phils look like buffoons. We should go on the offense and not wait and watch other teams add the greats. Drink up! It’s only money.

Each of our current outfielders are capable of hitting 25 homeruns and more. Franco could hit 30m homers with a full season. Why pay 35 million per year to add about 8 homeruns to an average fielder? Instead sign Kluber who could be our 2nd ace. That would be money well spent.

Phillies rank near the bottom in salary. There’s enough cold cash available to sign Harper or Machado, and Kluber with plenty left over to treat the fans to cheesesteaks and enchiladas.

Power + OBP!

I agree that the Phillies have at least a good outfield with power but obviously inconsistent, 2018 underachievers and slumpers. We won with Howard, Utley, and Rollins because these guys were great from the start, unlike the current crew who play mosly like the big time is all new to them and they need more time to learn.

Teams who want to sign top free agents not only want to play in October but also want to go deeeep in the playoffs, on to the WS, and win. We should build a team that rivals Boston and the Yankees. :suds:

The Phillies will not give a 10 year contract to anyone. Contracts like that never work out. Machado can not be trusted with
his type of thinking when he becomes a multi-millionaire. Harper is a .250 hitter. Harpers best asset is that he gets on base. Getting Kluber can add at least 4 wins per year!
