Weren't the Packers competitive before the salary cap was around?

In the age when the Pack were successful, a lot of players had to work regular jobs in the off-season. Kind of like the CFL is still.

You could pay the ENTIRE Canadian league with Aaron Rogers current salary. At any rate, the owners were in the catbird seat back then. They controlled the league with an iron fist, a great example of that was the monumentally shitty retirement and injury deal that the old players from that era had.

The explosion in salaries came about because the players negotiated their fair share of the revenues.

Still way too much...

Why?

Keeping your best players is huge, even if you have to overpay them. The alternative is hitting free agency, which is almost as much of a crapshoot as the draft.

Every team has bloated contracts. I'd much rather my teams are for returning players and not ufas.

Good moves on the Eagles part. I don't see anything wrong in locking up the best player on the team.

LOL at the Eagles going out of the frying pan and right into the fire with this cap destroying spending spree. Good god.

This. They are making a really strong push for stupidest franchise in the NFL. Unbelievable. The real losers in this, though, are the Broncos.

They would get them ALL once they hit FA after 4 or 5 years. And the Pack woud be the first one down the shitter. They are competitive now, but in an uncapped NFL, once Rodger's was a FA the Hawks would give him $350,000,000+

AN uncapped NFL would DIRECTLY and IMMEDIATELY kill the Packers and that would be heart breaking.

If you say so. I happen to disagree.

How so? I mean good chance that the Broncos were going to have to give Von Miller $60 million in guaranteed money anyway. IF anything the Eagles just showed a very nice avenue contract language wise of how to get this deal done. Part of the Broncos biggest problem is that they are a cash poor team. They don't have one of the richest owners in the league so they have to be careful how much money they have to set aside because of the rules that any guaranteed money has to go directly into an account whether it is paid that day or not. So this deal helps them to maybe delay some of that money going right into the account by having a 2nd set of guaranteed money go into an account after this upcoming season. Still money the player will get but money that the team doesn't have to give right away.

Of course they were.

And they would continue to be competitive.

Aren't they the team who currently has very few free agents? Hasn't it been their way to be cost efficient?

Not every player will want to go to some team that is stacked. There are only so many starting positions.

Don't you think Von Miller is going to look at this and want a lot more than that now? The guy is the premier pass rusher in the NFL. If Fletcher Cox is getting 60+ mil guaranteed, Miller is gonna probably want 75+. The Eagles really inflated the market on defensive linemen.

I honestly don't think so. Maybe this bumps up Miller's thoughts on some guaranteed money but he wanted around $60-65 million before this and I doubt that has changed at this point. I mean the very top Guaranteed money right off the bat is still Suh at $60 million. I doubt Miller would demand more than that. Heck he didn't demand but just a few thousand more in overall money than that of Suh. Miller isn't looking to completely blow up the market.

One thing to keep in mind about the Eagles is they are transitioning away from Chip Kelly's mistakes. Some of the big contracts they have are going to go off the books next year when they will cut certain guys like Sam Bradford and Ryan Matthews. Bradford alone will save $13.5 million if he is cut, $17 million if they manage to somehow trade him somewhere.

So, they are spending big on locking up guys like Zach Ertz and Fletcher Cox, and I generally think that is smart, even though they are paying a lot for some of these guys. But they are also saddled with some legacy issues due to the abrupt change in front-office philosophy, and that's part of the problem.

Lurie probably has to sit next to the new owners at the league meeting...the Eagles have artificially inflated the market for QBs and now Dlineman.

Cox is a great player and deserves to be the highest paid on THAT team, but they went overboard.

Not sure how Chip is blamed for Bradfords contract.
