I will never understand this. When was the last time a team won a SB with highly paid WR? Seriously.

The Steelers draft great WR's all the time. I wish the Pats could draft that well in this area. The Steelers should of traded him. I know fans wouldn't like it but that kind of money could be spent on more important things you need. No?

Pats couldn't do it with Moss.....

I bet they could with Brown though.....

I can understand the argument for not wanting to tie up that much money, and if this was 2-3 years ago I would have been in the same boat as you. But looking at the NFL's cap history there's plenty of reason not to be so worried anymore...

Max Team Salary
2011 - $120mil
2012 - $120.6mil
2013 - $123mil
2014 - $133mil
2015 - $143.28mil
2016 - $155.27mil
2017 - TBD, expected to be between $165 - $170mil.

Even after long-term deals for AB & Bell, the Steelers will still have room to sign FAs.

Also @SteelersPride ... If the tweets on the $ numbers are true... the total deal is 5 years for $72M, but more accurately it’s a 4 year extension worth $68M, that means they may have structured it so that his 2017 salary is only $4M (was supposed to be about $8M). Looks like they may have opened up more cap space for 2017 rather than adding to it. But i might be off-based on that since I don't quite know how the bonuses factor in. There will be some prorating, and new money to factor in. His cap hit was going to be around $13mil if he played under the old contract. We will have to wait and see how they structured the new deal.

Now the Steelers need to focus on getting Bell's deal done, because if they don't by July 15th then they will have to eat the $12mil cap hit. They can certainly get that number lower, but @Psych-Ward said he read somewhere that they are waitin on the AP situation in Minny to shake out. If AP is cut that would bring the league averages down for RB contracts which would lower both the Franchise-tag cap hit, and the market structure for contract negotiations. Smart move...

Except all they do is win baby win!!!! :suds:

But yes, the Patriots never seem to spend money when players deserve it

I think Gronk and Brady are doing alright, and now Bennett wants the big contract, so they are very good at managing the cap but some players have to be paid if you really expect to win in the NFL.....
AB is a game changer, so as long as he doesn't get hurt or just go on the I already got paid vacation, he was a no brainer....

due u cant like all this money tied up in 3 guys, unless they carry us, we cant sure up anything

You're crazy.

There are 32 teams in the league that would have loved to hand that contract to Brown.

Unquestioned best player at his position over the last 4 years. That is the type of player you hope you get to spend your cap space on.

Do the math at the end of this offseason and try to find a 2 or 3 player combination signed in free agency for this money that you would rather have on your team than just Brown. If you find one, post it and in 4 years we will laugh at it after it plays out. Free agency is fools gold. A lot of money for mostly average players and busts. And it's not like the steelers have an over abundance of talented players abut to come up in free agency that they won't be able to sign now than they otherwise could have.

If you are worried about paying too much money to your offensive skills position, you should be talking solely about Bell....not Brown. Of the two Brown is the obvious must sign.

Agreed Pitt did the right thing paying AB. They need to be careful how much they throw at Bell. Their offense isn't their problem. They need to spend some decent $ on the D to get further this season.

Bell was tagged today, so I believe he gets $17 million

Knowing they need about $10 mil for the rookies and slush fund. Doesn't appear they'll be chasing any major D players? Lots of teams with BIG Cap $$$ this year. People going to get paid.

They definitely should spend on D but not sure of their cap room after spending on AB and Bell and their other FA's ?

I see 10-6 in their future. Maybe 11-5. When they hit the playoffs (assuming) they make them they get bounced again. Too many good Ds and strong offenses. Pitt likely to have the same D problems.

13.6 million for Bryant
12.4 million for Bells tag
2.4 million for the rookies
estimated 151.1 million with new contracts and rookies
It looks like they have 19 million before cuts
