This goes a long way to explaining why PK might be working out with Gary Roberts in the offseason.
Mike Babcock: Phil, glad I could finally reach you! Just so you know this phone call is being recorded for quality purposes.

Phil Kessel: Yeah well you guys said it was 40 minutes or free so...

MB: Uh, no Phil this is your new coach, Mike Babcock.

PK: Oh, right, right I knew that. What can I do ya for coach?

MB: Well, I'd like to set you up with Gary Roberts and get you prepared for next season. We probably aren't going to be able to deal you because you earn the GDP of Mongolia and scored 3 goals after January.

PK: What restaurant does Gary own?

MB: No no, he's actually a fitness guy. Used to play for the team. Anyway, we don't think you're out of shape but just believe you could use a little bit of extra conditioning.

PK: *laughing hysterically* Yeah, yeah no I gotcha completely. Hell, I even wanna backcheck next season! Maybe start going into corners and learn how to take shots from places that aren't the faceoff dot! Fuck, for you coach, I'll even give up cheeseburgers!

MB: That's great to hear! I'm just going to enter this conversation into your file and it is now officially a part of your contract. Can't wait for you to hold up your end of the bargain! Remember, your contract now depends on it. Toodles! *crosses out Kessel's name on the list, begins dialing Lupul's number*

Well this is kind of a gray area, so the league should probably just go ahead and take a 3rd rounder, $3 million dollars and a 1st rounder that they'll later give back but only as the 30th instead of the 10th.

Louie Lams' head is going to explode before the end of the week. Book it.

Boston just traded a 3rd round pick for Zac Rinaldo. Discuss and laugh.

I keep trying to imagine a scenario or series of moves that will make us all stop and go - "Shit! We were wrong. Sweeney is a God Damned genius!"

The only scenario I come up with is Martian invasion and Sweeney uses his team as a human shield.

If Rinaldo is worth a third, imagine what Boll can fetch?

I'm not worried, I expect the Flames to have Hamilton signed to a contract sometime later today or tomorrow. If the Avs want to put in an offer sheet, go ahead, a) Hamilton has to sign it and b) the Flames will match so it's a moot exercise.

Draft Moves Put Avs in Prime Position to Sign an Offer Sheet - BSN Denver

Or let's say the Avs go crazy and offer Hamilton $9.2M/over 7 years. The Flames can walk, take the 4 picks and be better off than they were a week ago.

Even at 7.5 the Flames would get 2 firsts, a second and a third. Still better than what they gave up.

I was planning on sending a second rounder along with him for someone to just take him.

And the players should be good enough to live up to the figures they are earning.

Sorry, with the risk a player takes on the ice, they should get the money promised to them. GMs can stop giving out idiotically long deals if risk is the worry. I realize of course they make a significant amount of money, but generally speaking past performance gets them the big money. They're basically working for the big deal. If the worry is a guys character once he has a deal, then perhaps the team signing them should realize that. The league has afforded options that get teams out of some of the money of course, but letting GMs off the hook is far too simple.

I agree with this

Players work too hard and take too many risks not to get the money they signed for - yes, I know people will reply to this with a comeback like "Players know the risks and if they don't want to do it then they don't deserve the $" but if you sign the contract, the player should get the money

So if they're working for the big deal, they're off the hook once they have it? That sounds fair to all parties.

How come the risk the players take supersedes the risk the GM's take?

Keep in mind that non-guaranteed contracts can work in the players' favour, too - NFL players hold out and re-negotiate their contracts for more money all the time, and the ones who deserve it get paid.

If the players are getting screwed anywhere, it's in the current RFA system. How come Scott Gomez was earning $2 million more in 2011-12 for producing 2 goals and 11 points than John Tavares who was producing 81 points? Tell John Tavares he deserved $2 million less than Gomez. It's been proven that a player's prime comes in the 23-29 years these days; how come players are restricted to "bridge contracts" and restricted from moving teams during those years? Why not un-guarantee the contracts so that these players can earn their fair share when they deserve it the most?

In the NFL, a lot more players hold out and can actually re-negotiate - in the NHL, you can't re-negotiate during the contract and move money around so players probably want to make sure that they can get as much as they can before they sign a contract - and the salary cap is bigger in the NFL too

I am not a Cody Franson fan, he will command too much money for what he delivers on-ice.

What do you think he will get? I am guessing 3 - 4 mil per year, unless a Cap floor team needs to hand out some charity.
