Big horror movie enthusiast here. I've seen a lot of horror movies and am always looking for new recommendations! Horrors, thrillers, sci-fi, you name it! Use this thread to discuss any horror movies that you have watched, want to see (coming soon), or in the rumor mill. The good, the bad, and the ugly... All are welcome!

Disclaimer: We're all drawn to horror movies for different reasons. Horror is subjective and fear is personal. Luckily, horror can be many things! Whether you prefer dread, jump scares, or atmosphere, it's all welcome in my book. The more the merrier, I say.

Moving this one in here...

Annabelle

Didn't care for it. Had a few good moments, but it didn't come close to its predecessor The Conjuring. I love horror/scary movies and this one just didn't do it for me. Reminded me of "Deliver Us From Evil" in that it had great cinematography but fell short on the substance. It relied more on loud noises and sudden outbursts to scare you.

Pretty surprised by this one. Thought it was going to be terrible but ended up being pretty decent. Typical first person thriller. About a group of explorers that enter catacombs beneath paris in search of the gates of hell or the underworld? Can't quite remember why they went down there. Had a pretty good plot twist at the end. Definitely recommend it!

Yea and I loved them! The crazy bat muff chick in the 1st one was ridiculously scary. Loved the zombie skit in the 2nd one.

I heard they were making a 3rd???

That chick was creepy as shit. Even when he met her at the bar, and she just kept whispering, "I like you".

And yeah, they made a third one, "Viral". It's good. A little more humor, but they stay true to the formula.

Black Water Vampire (2014)

1st person POV. About a documentary team trying to make a name for themselves by investigating a string of deaths in a small town forest. The town & the team all believe it was a guy that is locked up, but there isn't much proof.

Long story short they uncover a cult that raises creepy bat-like vampires that feed on young women.

Had great potential, but the CGI was subpar, the ending was a tad ridiculous, and the acting was atrocious. Still worth the watch if you are digging the bottom of the barrel for new material.

Leprechaun: Origins (2014)

WWE productions, so my expectations were low... And it didn't disappoint lol. I'll put it this way, if you aren't drinking while watching this movie then don't bother. It's about a group of teenagers that vacation somewhere in the goonies of Ireland. They end up encountering a leprechaun creature, and you can guess the rest. I did appreciate the attempt to make the creature more realistic instead of the fabled midget wearing green clothing.

Neverlake (2013)

About a girl that travels to Italy to visit her father and ends up getting caught in the middle of a ghost feud.

More of a science fiction horror. I was impressed with the first 10 minutes or so, and that kept me around through the entire movie. I thought it was a decent ghost story, but there are a lot of really boring moments in it. Aims at a younger audience, meaning its filled with lots of pure spoiled ignorance. It is not a scary sort of ghost story, but rather a simple story of revenge. Still keeps you hooked with good twists in the plot.

I had my thumb on the RENT button about 3 different times with this movie.
I just had this feeling that in 15 minutes I was going to be looking at the hoop on my phone.

I'll pull the trigger.

The Lazarus Effect (2015) : Starts Feb 27th

Synopsis: A group of medical students discover a way to bring dead patients back to life.

Looks decent! I'm a sucker for Olivia Wilde. But I'm always leery of PG-13 horror films. To me they are usually just average. I'll probably end up waiting until it hits the cheaper theaters or just watch it online for free.

Used to be a big fan years ago. The Shining was one of my favorites but I know it pales by today's effects standards. I remember seeing Susperia in the theatre. HOLY FUCK!! It still has a very high rating in IMDB, but again, it's 1977.

I could easily do without the CGI if movies would be made to the standard of the Shining. Not sure anything could ever come close to old school horror. I still watch the original Halloween every year in October. Everything you see nowadays is very watered down. They rely on the short silences then blare sounds into the speakers just to get a rise out of you. I'm not a fan of that at all.

Sounds like I'm not missing anything then. Give me a horror movie with well crafted suspense every time. Mindless gore is pointless.

It Follows (2015): Starts March 13th

Synopsis: For nineteen-year-old Jay, Autumn should be about school, boys and week-ends out at the lake. But after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, she finds herself plagued by strange visions and the inescapable sense that someone, something, is following her. Faced with this burden, Jay and her friends must find a way to escape the horrors that seem to be only a few steps behind.

Kind of mixed bag with this one. Just by reading the synopsis it sounds like a reach, but after watching the trailer I'm interested. I've been reading reviews from people in New Zealand that have watched it and it sounds like more of a realistic horror film. Which is usually what I like in my horror movies.

You definitely aren't. Everything you see in theaters is more about relying on the background to create the vibe, instead of the actors and director creating it for you. Nobody seems to be able to create good horror films anymore. I've found some good ones via the Indie Horror Festival. I would recommend you to check out their yearly award winners if you are looking to scratch that itch.

Makes me want to drag out the movie "Carrie" again. It's been awhile.

Pathology (2008)

About a group of medical students that devise a deadly game to see who can commit the perfect murder. For those that like the more realistic horror then this is the film for you. This film was lesser known at the time of its release, but trust me it is worth the watch. It keeps you lured into it by the psychological games they play, and it has a great twist in it. It has excellent direction, great photography, and solid performances that really elevate this horror/thriller and make it so much better than I expected. Found it on Netflix of all places lol.
