How can this team not start Rua everyday next year on the big club? How long before we have to ask the same thing about Smolinski?

with what rua has done, i want to see him as the everyday LF'er unless they move to make a run at a run producing power hitting OF'er. Haven't seen the HR power at the ML level from Rua but I think that will come too. Like I said earlier though some of these guys will be moved for pitching probably. Hope Rua stays though what Ski has done so far is real good. Think Wastin pointed out earlier what Ski has done so far at the ML level outshines his minor league stats

Short answer for both is SSS. You give them both a shot in spring and see what happens.

I just don't know what else Rua can do to show he is ready. I would rather go by what he is doing in the regular season than what he does in ST. Besides they really need to decide on this going into the offseason and not when the offseason is over.

I was thinking about this last night about Rua vs Smolinski. Not sure we have a place for both. Rua has power and has produced at the minor league level (2013-26 doubles/32 HR - 2014 26 doubles/18 HR) but has been an IF his career and just really learning to play the OF so will have some learning curves there. Smolinski has been a straight 265 hitter and I mean consistently 265 hitter with minimal power but is an OF and strictly an OF. Rua is 24 and Smolinski 25 so no big deal there. I liked the article about what a dedicated worker Rua is but I have a feeling both are very teachable. I may be wrong but I just think if we HAD to make a choice I might go with Rua as I think he will be able to sustain his offense/power over a longer period of time and will be very versatile playing IF/OF.

As discussed here earlier, the Rangers are in for some real tough decision making for who does/doesn't make the 40 man roster. From the DMN.

if the Rangers didn’t have 12 guys on the 60-day DL. None of those guys currently count against the 40-man roster, but all of them must be re-added to the 40-man roster after the season. That’s to say nothing of other minor leaguers, such as top pitching prospect Luke Jackson, who must be added to the roster to be protected from the Rule 5 draft.
It begs the question: How do you fit 50 players onto a 40-man roster?

So I know we are all down on Choice, but Gentry has not been productive all this year offensively. He's also only played 94 games. So if Choice can actually turn into a better than average power threat in a COF spot Texas can still win that trade. Plus they got a minor leaguer in Bostick. Much as I loved Craig he's on the wrong side of 30.

I did not know all that came with getting the first pick in the draft.

However, as I'm sure you're aware by now, it also means getting a nice parting gift from MLB to the tune of the first pick in the 2015 draft, waiver priority over the offseason, the first pick in the Rule 5 draft, the largest bonus pool in the draft, and the most international spending allocation.

Gotta start losing games...That is a pretty sweet deal to have.

So what do you guys think about Bonilla? That hook is pretty nasty.

I like his stuff. Just needs to work on his control. Last I looked it was something like 38-27 strikes-balls.

I liked TR's column comparing Choice's season to Dean Palmer's first season.

too quick to make that call based on 75 at bats. maybe as a bench player but not as an everyday starter.

I would agree if the 2015 Rangers was like the 2011 team with aspirations of going back to the WS. This team is in a lot different shape and next year will be a continuation of the rebuilding plan. I would think that if they did decide to go with Rua as a starter next season it would be based on more than just his ABs as a Ranger and would also take into account what he has done in the minors in his career.

We have had situations in the past where they decided a guy was ready without the benefit of any MLB ABs. Elvis, Hank, and Ian all got jobs without prior at bats in the big leagues. Now Hank eventually was sent back down, but coming out of ST that year he had the job. I am not saying Ryan will be as good as any of those guys, but just pointing out that 75 ABs in the big leagues has been more than it has taken some guys to be awarded a job.

They may not go in that direction. JD may have plans of bringing in an established player to fill any position that Ryan could play, but I certainly wouldn't be surprised if they did decide to go with Rua next season simply based on what he has done so far.

He needs to be starting wherever he is playing.

I'd like to see him flash a little power at the big league level before the season is over.

then i put him at AAA and make him an every day player and make him the 1st player we call up if a starting position player goes down

Outside of picking up a player through trade or free agency we don't have a better option.

Rangers hurler Colby Lewis says that he was told “maybe” when he asked club GM Jon Daniels about the possibility of a return next year, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star -Telegram reports. The 35-year-old righty has only a 5.12 ERA over 158 1/3 innings this year, but then again he had been out since July of 2012 with various injury issues. Lewis owns a 4.33 FIP and has notched 7.0 K/9 against 2.4 BB/9 on the season, making him a potentially appealing option for teams looking for a solid innings-eater.
