As a most difficult season winds down, Maddux, whose contract as pitching coach expires after the season, finds himself torn.

He said he would love to return to the Rangers for a seventh season. Manager Ron Washington has said he’d love for Maddux to return. Who wouldn’t? Under Maddux, the Rangers have posted the five lowest-season ERAs in the 20-year history of Globe Life Ballpark. And with word that Maddux planned to accompany Washington on MLB’s All-Star tour of Japan in November, it seemed like things were moving toward a resolution.

The situation, however, has become complicated in the last week. Much more so. For Maddux. And the Rangers.

Houston fired manager Bo Porter. Maddux, who previously interviewed for managerial jobs with the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox, acknowledged Thursday that he would be “very interested” in talking to the Astros about their position.

It’s an about-face for Maddux. He declined to interview for the Astros job two years ago when Porter was eventually hired. And with Nolan Ryan on the Astros’ unofficial search committee, Maddux, along with Rangers Triple-A manager Steve Buechele, will likely get strong endorsements for interviews.

Rangers bench coach Tim Bogar, who interviewed twice with Houston before Porter was hired, also figures to be a candidate.

It is time to find Ron Washington's replacement before Nolan raids us. That means it is time to fire Wash.

Alfaro had a tough time last night as he hit into a DP with the bases loaded and made 3 errors. All part of learning at that level.

This was included in the previous article:

At the same time, the Rangers intend to grow the bulk of their rotation from within and have three — make that at least three — pitching instructors who have all gone without a significant promotion in the last six years.

If they don’t find ways to promote bullpen coach Andy Hawkins, minor league pitching coordinator Danny Clark and Triple-A pitching coach Brad Holman, all of whom have spent significant time with the younger pitchers on whom the team is turning to with more regularity, they risk losing them in a mass exodus.

The Rangers must choose between retaining Maddux and possibly losing numerous coaches. Maddux must choose between possibly committing to the Rangers or going after the job of his dreams.

All part of the interesting off season it's going to be.

I think it's a potentially horrid situation brewing with Nolan sitting down the road in our own division, and Preller out in SD and in the NL.

These two have more than an excellent idea of the potential within the organization and how to attract them if need be.

Supposedly, Preller is already disliked in the SD organization. I'm sure there are a few within the Rangers organization that like him though. A promotion is a still a promotion. I would take it if it meant more money.

Any idea of what this is all about? I don't know much of anything about him, but suspect he has a little of that young, New York arrogance which rubs most of us at least a little.

And we'll find out this off season how much JD has matured out of that "my shit doesn't stink" kind of persona.
Because as much as everyone on here wants to hang Wash off the side of Globe Life, JD isn't all that far behind.

This is a crucial year for many, if not all of the managerial/FO staff IMO.

I wonder what is behind "I deeply regret I have let down the Rangers organization. "

Hope it's not drugs but the guy has been under a world of pressure.

Who ever probably won't bunt with two strikes.

Come on now......don't kick him in the ass on the way out the door.

Ya gotta admit....Wash gave it all he had. Now, what he had is as a bench or 3rd base coach capability wise, not as a manager. But surely you don't blame him for trying to climb the "baseball-corporate ladder?"

Most of us would and probably have done something similar in life.

Took this team further than they have ever gone. He'll handle his personal problems and coach in the majors again, I'm sure.

:agree:......He did a fine job as a coach.

I sincerely hope his "personal problems" are short and soon to be resolved.

He'd make a terrific bench coach IMO. NOT WITH US. But with his next stop.

However, I think the window of opportunity for him to become a manager again has slammed shut.
