I am under the impression that to go over the salary cap you need to use exemptions, such as Bird rights.

Salary Cap is at $58m for the 13-14 season with the Luxury thresh hold at $71m.

If the Salary Cap goes to $60m then Kobe's $24m is exactly 40% of the salary Cap.

Yes, if you have Bird rights on a player, you can resign them and go over the salary cap. I believe the salary cap for the 14/15 season will be $62.9 million (I seem to recall this number recently). With Kobe's $23.4 million salary, that's roughly 37% of the cap.

I think the Lakers want to stay below the luxury tax threshold next season in order to avoid the even stiffer repeater tax penalties.

Who would they give up? A draft pick? They would have to move Perkins and Ibaka to cover that salary and there is no way that is happening, even if they kept 1 or the other OKCs owner is not a fan of luxury tax.

You do understand the term "out there example", right?

ANY team can rebuild quickly. I don't like the Kobe deal, I think they overpaid him......but it's their money. He wasn't likely to get more anywhere else.

ANYONE that thinks Carmelo Anthony is going to be the saviour is in for a rude awakening. If the Lakers are smart they don't even bother talking to him. He adds nothing......sure he can score, but he's a ball black hole and plays no defense. He's not the missing piece. Better guys out there.

As long as Kobe is on the team, he's the focus of the offense. You need a role player, but I don't know who's available. I don't see ANY max player coming to play with Kobe as long as they aren't able to be THE guy......most of these guys' egos won't let them play second fiddle, even to Kobe.

Thats always the struggle......trying to find a superstar that is willing to give up minutes and stats. This is why I've always said the Lakers will be better off when Kobe retires, since he isn't really going to take a paycut or shoot less.

I'd wager most players in the league want to play in LA. So there's going to be opportunities. It comes down to SMART money management and personnel decisions.

For some reason, the media keeps talking this 'Melo to the Lakers crap. I don't think the Lakers have any real interest in 'Melo, especially not on a max deal. He's entering the twilight of his career and would likely only be worth the money for his first season or 2 before the inevitable erosion of his skills. He doesn't strike me as a "Kobe type" who will do whatever he can and make whatever adjustments to his game that he needs to remain a top player.

Besides, the Knicks will offer him a max deal and he won't walk away from that to play in L.A. for less.

I agree 100% with your last statement. The Lakers told Kobe when they offered him the deal he just signed, that they have a plan. Now they have to execute the plan and see if it works.

Exactly, it's not as if the Lakers signed him to some 5 year max deal. They signed him to a contract that still allows them to go after a max deal player in 2014 or 2015 and then another max player in 2016 when Kobe's contract is off the books.

Meanwhile, they retain a player who will make more money for the franchise than he will ever be paid. Also, there is no guarantee that the Lakers won't be relevant in less than 3 years. They will put together a very attractive deal for Lebron and if they don't get him, then they will go after Kevin Love in 2015.

In 2016, there will be more attractive free agents (I think both Durant and Westbrook are available) so they can go after another one then.

You also have to remember that this likely marks the beginning of the end of Pau as a Laker. I believe that the Lakers will either trade him before the deadline for players and/or picks or let him go as a free agent.
I might be wrong about the new CBA but......I think I read before that teams who are over the cap (paying luxury tax) who want to trade an expiring contract (Pau) can only receive back another player(s) who also has an expiring contract(s).

I tried to find the wording but cannot. If true, then they could only receive draft picks if said team does not have any expiring contracts. That kind of limits finding a trading partner.

They are saying the right things but if they are truthful then Laker fans should run now before it sinks.

In essence you're accusing management of misleading their fans....how crooked of you to say. Again, you know nothing about what their plan is and they've got a MUCH better track record than majority of teams put together. I'll trust the Lakers' game plan vs. your twisted commentary.

This Lakers fan and I'm certain others aren't running anywhere

it's a bad deal. players don't get better in their late 30s. kobe coming off injury. 37% of the salary cap to him. bad deal. it just is.

i don't care how many seats kobe filled in prior years.. he made millions then. no loyalty contract is needed here. bad bad bad deal.

Logic - I'd be much more concerned with your direction-less/clueless franchise starting with your HC. It's like putting a waterboy to play QB.

Funny how we don't see much of yours/C's fans posts on your team these days. There's always more to talk about all-things Lakers no matter if they're contending or not.

Actually the interview with Jim Buss earlier today was kind of interesting. just depends on who you talk to...

'Sides, it's been said all day long. You folks are acting like the Lakers have completely killed their future, and that's hardly the case...

Is the Kobe Bryant extension a good or bad deal for the Lakers? [poll] - latimes.com

CL,

The Celtics are in rebuild. I came to that conclusion two years ago if you will recall. I post on these issues often. Its just that the Lakers moves are going insane and I cannot help myself.

Your paper did a poll of Lakers fans and this deal. I seem to be representing Most LA fans based on this poll.

Their plan was to sign Dwight to a max 5yr deal and most LA fans didn't want it. Now you say they do know what they're doing. 3-4mos ago they were being stupid. NOW they know what they're doing???

Their track record for the last 25-30yrs were decisions made by Doc. We've already seen glimpses of stuff done by Junior that Doc would not have done (giant Dwight banner begging him to sign)
