The $30M payment terms are odd: Detroit will pay $6m each year from 2016 to 2020. For Luxury Tax computations, it should be treated as part of Fielder's contract and the AAV should be calculated over the final 7 years (about $4.3m)... So Prince will "only" cost them about $20m per year....

I wonder if Texas can add a workout/diet clause to the contract. He'll be 36 at the end of the deal. I'd be very scared if I were a TX fan. Hopefully it will work out, but this type of financial commitment to a future DH could be crippling.

I'd be surprised if Texas owned him to the end of his contract. Another thing people never mention ifs his durability. The guy is big, but he plays pretty much all of every season.

getting rid of Fielder and getting anyone in Kinsler's league was the best move the TIgers have made.....since trading for Miguel......

FINALLY the Tigers are trying to win something....They sign 2 RP and they ARE FINALLY GOING FOR A RING....

Kudos to the Tigers for ridding themselves of Fielder.

Watch and see how many pitches Cabrera gets to hit with vmart hitting behind him.

The yankees are going to resign cano- it is unlikely that the yankees will go into 2014 without their best player...

As for the trade, i think both teams will be happy with it... the only problem with the trade is that kinsler has health issues... If he can stay healthy(or be healthy when it matters) then this was a great trade for both teams... Prince is going to be nasty in texas...

If indeed it is Vmart hitting behind Miggy, there are worth choices than a switch-hitting DH with some power left in his bat. Unless Miggy's injuries are totally cleared up by spring training, I think he might be hitting clean-up with someone else (Hunter) in the 3rd spot.

Fielder is just like Tony Romo

great stats during the regular season but folds like a cheap tent during the post season

sounds like the Tigers got the better end of the deal here

Initially I was like

But then once I thought about it realized this is a good deal for both sides. Cutting away excess and adding a need for both parties. Very good deal and cool to see work out for them.

WOW. Talk about an out of left field blockbuster.......

Question though, as I have not seen it addressed yet.

Does Jackson still hit leadoff for Detroit?

If Detroit were smart then Jackson should never seen the lead-off spot again. Look what he did in the post season when he was NOT leading off compared to when he was.

In a sense you are right. His post-BoSox words made it a priority to send him packing. With his personal situation and tax benefit in the move, it was probably easy to convince him to accept.

Texas also has no state tax and that should give him a 10-15% raise. But if he lobs a couple more of those it's no big deal comments I think Ranger fans will get tired of him quickly.

Trade makes sense for both clubs. I wonder what Napoli's asking price was?

Yeah, Kinsler is not a "great" leadoff hitter by any stretch (.273 BA / .349 OBP career), but he strikes out half as much as Jackson. Austin would benefit from being in the 7 or 8 spot where he can be more aggressive. He has extra-base power, too.

Part of what makes Ian a good lead off hitter is that he sees so many pitches. When your first batter in a game is a 9-12 pitch at bat it sets a certain tone and can get in a pitchers head.

Detroit has lacked a true leadoff guy for years. It gives Kinsler added value! Plus he is smart on the base paths.

This is a long term deal to help finically. The cash Detroit saves will be used to extend guys like Miggy, Scherzer, or Fister. Big bats in the lineup are great but if Detroit doesn't have their starting pitching they lose games 8-6 or 9-8.

Miggy has hit in front of him before and did just fine. He has gotten even better with fielder in the lineup, curious to see how much of that is protection from prince and how much is miggy in his prime. Many teams had no problem walkin miggy and facing fielder mostly because miggy is the best player on the planet and even makes a hitter such as prince look ho hum.

How would tx get rid of him? I cant believe det got rid of him at his point, i cant imagine a team taking him off of the rangers hands in three yrs.

Because Detroit will be paying a big chunk of his salary at the end.

We don't pay a dime until '16. By that time, Prince will likely be a high end DH in the mold of a Thome if you are lucky. The $30MM is kind of a phantom number and not at all an accurate reflection of the true compensation.

I never thought Kins was a good leadoff hitter. He was there because forever, the Rangers had new other options IMO.

I get the fact Detroit wants to save some money. I also understand wanting to move Miggy & they like Castellanos, but trading Fielder for Kinsler was a mistake. Kinsler is a solid player, but Fielder changes any teams lineup in a big way.

I think you have it backwards. The Tigers are intent on spending MORE money, just more efficiently. They had 3 1B/DH's and one needed to go. Getting Kinsler fills a need and allows the money to be spent elsewhere (LF, RP) without sacrificing the talent level. It gives them some flexibility with extending Max. If I didn't beleive that Fielder would rebound to his best years, I would think the Rangers got fleeced in the short term as well as the long.
