YEP. My party. The one aligned with the US Constitution that made the country great. Like Dad said...keep it off the board.

Is THIS ^^^^^^ what you call "keeping it off the board?

The Democratic Party is what made the country great. YOU are what continues to dumb our country down:

ignorance, small-mindedness, a preference for stupidity over enlightenment - the repugnican party.

Keep it off the board, geekmoron - for YOUR sake.

Can't we all be friends and agree to disagree on political affiliations? Let's aim our vitriol at our rivals... In the appropriate smack boards of course...

This post exemplifies exactly what's wrong with our current so called leaders. Anyone that believes that one party, or one person, is solely responsible for the mess our government, and thus country is in, is naive at best and ignorant at worst. The fact is neither faction is willing to compromise at this point. I learned a long time ago that a good agreement between to opposing factions usually meant neither party was completely happy. Having said this, and not commenting on which side is "right", it all begins and ends at the top. We need a leader who transcends partisan politics and gets the government functioning again. Unfortunately, we do not have that. We have someone that is more interested in pointing out why the opposition is wrong than working with them to find a mutually acceptable solution. This is coming from someone that thought when he was first elected that he was what the country needed at the time. But his complete lack of experience in anything related to dealing with real world problems became quickly apparent. He has no idea how to build relationships with anyone that has a differing view. He only is comfortable surrounding himself with those that tell him how great he is. In short, he is all talk and no action.

This opinion in no way means I agree with shutting down the government. But when you can't get a real discussion on serious issues (like our debt level and out of control spending) with the President, I can understand why one might feel they have to resort to such measures. Unfortunately I think its just counter productive. The way to deal with an ineffective leader is to run a viable candidate against him and beat him. The Republicans haven't done that in quite a while.

As I have told others in person - if they decide to change the name at some point so be it. However - this current debate is predominately conducted by people with ulterior motives that really don't care about the issue. They engage in the debate mainly for one of three reasons - 1.) to make a name for themselves 2.) because they hate the Redskins or 3.) someone is prompting them to act in this manner by throwing a few favors or material things their way (this would apply to a lot of the obscure protesters).

I have no issue with this type of protest if is sincere. However - when I read something from a hack like Mike Wise it ticks me off. I would not let this clown clean my toilet let alone write (er - I mean blog) for a major news source. His articles in print are not worthy to be used as toilet paper. He is simply promoting his own cause & that of the (formerly decent) WP which is primarily a Redskins hating media source.

Oh well - let em do what they want. I just wonder what other obscure cause they would promote if the team ever changed their name and if they would give the organization credit if this occurred (doubt it).

I sat through the entire day long symposium the Smithsonian held earlier this year & for the first time began to empathize with those who sincerly feel strongley about this topic. But the constant daily bombardment of articles at this point has just made me numb & i'm just sick of hearing about it at this point ... it's such a distraction from DALLASS WEEK.

On a side note, the debate has made it to Hollywood. Celebrity Jenny McCarthy asked her fans for their opinions on twitter ... most of the feedback has been in support for keeping the name.

32m[/ame] To my Native Americans... Discussing on hot topics about the Washington Redskins being a controversial team name. Thoughts?

Now that sounds like some honest opinions on the subject. I also would much rather listen & look at someone like Jenny McCarthy than those God awful looking folks at the WP. At least her debate sounds somewhat sincere.

Honestly - how does a reporter who quite possible used the name "Redskins" for the last 10-20 years on a daily basis all of sudden take issue with it, and have to go the silly route of calling them something like "The Unnamed Team from DC"? Ridiculous.

A comment I read that got a chuckle out of me
If they ever change the name it should be changed to 'Reskins'

Because they have no 'D'

It never ends ... Donald Trump has weighed in
2h[/ame] President should not be telling the Washington Redskins to change their name-our country has far bigger problems! FOCUS on them, not nonsense

Name entomology NPR 9/2013:
"According to Smithsonian historian Ives Goddard, early historical records indicate that "Redskin" was used as a self-identifier by Native Americans to differentiate between the two races. Goddard found that the first use of the word "redskin" came in 1769, in negotiations between the Piankashaws and Col. John Wilkins. Throughout the 1800s, the word was frequently used by Native Americans as they negotiated with the French and later the Americans. The phrase gained widespread usage among whites when James Fenimore Cooper used it in his 1823 novel The Pioneers. In the book, Cooper has a dying Indian character lament, "There will soon be no red-skin in the country."

ok, i'll stop now, lol

Kind of like the old joke when the Wizards changed their name years ago. Prior to that time several people demanded that the "Washington Bullets" change their name since it inferred things associated with violence. Therefore - it was suggested that they simply change their name to "Bullets".

Oklahoma is a state located in Southern United States. Oklahoma is the 20th most extensive and the 28th most populous of the 50 United States. The state's name is derived from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning "red people",

Giving this latest discovery I guess Obama would like Oklahoma to change their name to Oklahomie...

2h The #Redskins Nickname Debate, Part Infinity - How the media covers it, and possible action: http://sbn.to/1e8bNlY

Great article! It pretty much represents my position. Again - I will not lose sleep if they eventually change the name. What bothers me is how the media & others misrepresent the situation. The portion of the article where they showed how Obama's quote was misrepresented is very telling. In this age of instant communication the media & their reporters have no accountability whatsoever. This has been displayed numerous times such as in the Duke Lacrosse case where most of the "facts" presented where a complete fabrication. The impact to the lying reporter? Very little.

This is what I don't like about Twitter. Supposed credible sources can just make things up & instantly ruin someone's reputation. After something is proven untrue it is too late - the damage is done.

Loved this quote from Mike Wise in this article:

"If one person is offended, we should all be offended."

100% BS! This is the same logic that bible thumpers have used in the past to try to keep certain TV shows off the air or not allow certain music to be sold to the public. Save this rhetoric for someplace like North Korea! Also - using his logic - if I don't like the way the Notre Dame mascot looks (& I am Irish) should this be grounds to force them to change their name? As I have said before - Wise is a complete buffoon. My dog would do a much better job writing his column.

What a brilliant article! I wholeheartedly agree with its points and how it maps out the context and content in terms of the potency and value given to words.

What burns me the MOST, is the national platform being used irresponsibly by those within the media who feel the need to DECIDE matters for people. And, I'm not talking about the change/no change of the nick name here. That, i will leave to others, i will love and watch my team, regardless.

I firmly support the inherent principles of freedom of speech and press, but let's not go down that slippery slope of being mindless sheep in our opinions or ability to decide for ourselves what matters to us as individuals. Differing opinions are critical, as are open discussions and debate in a free society. Deciding how you feel about something, is your right, your choice and always solely individual. This principle is Crucial. That's what makes us a great nation and defines us as a diverse and unified people.

Letter from Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder to fans

To Everyone in our Washington Redskins Nation:
As loyal fans, you deserve to know that everyone in the Washington Redskins organization -- our players, coaches and staff -- are truly privileged to represent this team and everything it stands for. We are relentlessly committed to our fans and to the sustained long-term success of this franchise.
That’s why I want to reach out to you -- our fans -- about a topic I wish to address directly: the team name, “Washington Redskins.” While our focus is firmly on the playing field, it is important that you hear straight from me on this issue. As the owner of the Redskins and a lifelong fan of the team, here is what I believe and why I believe it.
Like so many of you, I was born a fan of the Washington Redskins. I still remember my first Redskins game.
Most people do. I was only six, but I remember coming through the tunnel into the stands at RFK with my father, and immediately being struck by the enormity of the stadium and the passion of the fans all around me.
I remember how quiet it got when the Redskins had the ball, and then how deafening it was when we scored. The ground beneath me seemed to move and shake, and I reached up to grab my father’s hand. The smile on his face as he sang that song ... he’s been gone for 10 years now, but that smile, and his pride, are still with me every day.
That tradition -- the song, the cheer -- it mattered so much to me as a child, and I know it matters to every other Redskins fan in the D.C. area and across the nation.
Our past isn’t just where we came from -- it’s who we are.
As some of you may know, our team began 81 years ago -- in 1932 -- with the name “Boston Braves.” The following year, the franchise name was changed to the “Boston Redskins.” On that inaugural Redskins team, four players and our Head Coach were Native Americans. The name was never a label. It was, and continues to be, a badge of honor.
In 1971, our legendary coach, the late George Allen, consulted with the Red Cloud Athletic Fund located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and designed our emblem on the Redskins helmets. Several years later, Coach Allen was honored by the Red Cloud Athletic Fund. On the wall at our Ashburn, Virginia, offices is the plaque given to Coach Allen -- a source of pride for all of us. “Washington Redskins is more than a name we have called our football team for over eight decades. It is a symbol of everything we stand for: strength, courage, pride, and respect -- the same values we know guide Native Americans and which are embedded throughout their rich history as the original Americans.
I’ve listened carefully to the commentary and perspectives on all sides, and I respect the feelings of those who are offended by the team name. But I hope such individuals also try to respect what the name means, not only for all of us in the extended Washington Redskins family, but among Native Americans too.
Consider the following facts concerning the “Washington Redskins” name:
1) The highly respected Annenberg Public Policy Center polled nearly 1,000 self-identified Native Americans from across the continental U.S. and found that 90% of Native Americans did not find the team name “Washington Redskins” to be “offensive.

2) In an April 2013 Associated Press survey, 79% of the respondents stated the Washington Redskins should not
change their name, while only 1 1% believed the team’s name should change.
Paul Woody, a columnist for the Richmond Times Dispatch, interviewed three leaders of Virginia Native American tribes this May. They were all quoted by Mr. Woody as stating that the team name doesn’t offend them -- and their comments strongly supported the name “Washington Redskins.” Also in May, SiriusXM NFL Radio hosted Robert Green, the longtime and recently retired Chief of the Fredericksburg-area Patawomeck Tribe, who said, among other things:
“Frankly, the members of my tribe -- the vast majority -- don’t find it offensive. I’ve been a Redskins fan for years. And to be honest with you, I would be offended if they did change [the name, Redskins ... This is] an attempt by somebody ... to completely remove the Indian identity from anything and pretty soon ... you have a wipeout in society of any reference to Indian people ... You can’t rewrite history -- yes there were some awful bad things done to our people over time, but naming the Washington football team the Redskins, we don’t consider to be one of those bad things.”
Our franchise has a great history, tradition and legacy representing our proud alumni and literally tens of millions of loyal fans worldwide. We have participated in some of the greatest games in NFL history, and have won five World Championships. We are proud of our team and the passion of our loyal fans. Our fans sing “Hail to the Redskins” in celebration at every Redskins game. They speak proudly of “Redskins Nation” in honor of a sports team they love.
So when I consider the Washington Redskins name, I think of what it stands for. I think of the Washington Redskins traditions and pride I want to share with my three children, just as my father shared with me -- and just as you have shared with your family and friends.
I respect the opinions of those who disagree. I want them to know that I do hear them, and I will continue to listen and learn. But we cannot ignore our 81 year history, or the strong feelings of most of our fans as well as Native Americans throughout the country. After 81 years, the team name “Redskins” continues to hold the memories and meaning of where we came from, who we are, and who we want to be in the years to come.
We are Redskins Nation and we owe it to our fans and coaches and players, past and present, to preserve that heritage.

With Respect and Appreciation,

Dan Snyder

PS. Wherever I go, I see Redskins bumper stickers, Redskins decals, Redskins t-shirts, Redskins everything. I know how much this team means to you, and it means everything to me as well. Always has. I salute your passion and your pride for the Burgundy Gold.

While I think this is a great response, I can't help but believe the best course of action is to ignore it. Eventually the Mike Wise's of the world will find another soul to save. This letter will only serve to extend the conversation in the media and add fuel to the fire of those whose minds are made up.

he's definitely changed his tone from you can quote me in all caps to I will continue to listen and learn.

The HogsHaven article i posted below also had some good suggestion ... think it would go a long way if he would start to make some donations of time/money to Native American causes.

Dan Snyder says "Redskins" are who we are

Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder again defended the franchise's nickname, this time in a letter to season-ticket holders, pointing to tradition and arguing that the team's past "isn't just where we came from -- it's who we are."

Snyder wrote to fans that he wanted them to "hear straight from me on the issue."

"The name was never a label," Snyder said in the letter. "It was, and continues to be, a badge of honor."
