I agree with Turn Up the Heat. The days are done that LA and Boston could attract FA's by simply saying look at our legacy. Its going to take alot of hard work for any team to remain competitive. That was Stern's dream with the CBA..parity.

We saw with evidence this year (with Howard) that LA was not the most attractive place for a top 5 player. Two more pop up this year in Melo and Lebron. We will get confirmation or the opposite.

I personally would have hired Phil, amnestied Kobe, and used this and 2014/15 to have built around Howard. They chose a different path. We will see how that goes

His post realistically explained how it isn't so easy to "make it happen" regarding the Lakers ability to sign superstar free agents. You do understand salary caps and such right?

How? If it was so easy, you should be able to explain how. You should also be able to list all these superstar free agents that turned downed contract offers from the Lakers because they didn't want to play with Kobe. Good luck. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Thanks for reducing that for me. Like I said before you have a small point.

Thats a strawman. The Lakers never offered a contract because no FA's showed any interest. Why? Because of Kobes presence.

.

If they don't sign in Los Angeles next summer (which I don't think they will), that doesn't necessarily mean that they didn't think Los Angeles was an attractive place to play.

Small point? That's a huge point. Don't gloss over it because it obliterates your position.

I don't have the strawman argument. Mine is based on reality. Your conclusion is, since no superstar FAs have signed in Los Angeles once Kobe became alpha dog, the reason must be because of Kobe's presence. That's only a reality in your mind. You have no evidence to support such a claim.

You have to understand rule, these guys apparently think (as macmac pointed out) that Jeannie Buss is actually a genie and she could magically make $60 million in salaries disappear so that the Lakers could sign whomever they want!!

However, mont expects everyone to just set aside things like cap space and agree that no one wants to play for the Lakers with Kobe there, because he says so!!

Yes I do. No one has went there unless forced to by trade. By all rights players should be jumping at the chance to play for the Lakers. Kobe is killing you guys in wins and future FA's

Kobe was voted the league's favorite player by the incoming talent, Dwayne Wade called Kobe the best of the generation yet no one wants to play with Kobe? I just think there aren't many people who are good enough to play not only for a franchise like the Lakers, but next to Kobe Bryant, who's the hardest working man in the league.

With all that said, you're kidding yourself if you think the Lakers can't reload. Did you forget that CP3 deal already? That one would have Kobe sitting with 6 right now. CP3 was not rejecting that deal, hmmm CP3 seems to fit the bill as someone who's intense, hardworking and talented enough to play alongside Kobe.

I heard through the grapevine CP3 was not exactly disappointed the trade didn't go down and was only going to stay there if he and Kobe could co-exist. Basically the same scenario Howard was in. Lakers can definitely retool after Kobe comes off the books.

Lakers fans kill me.

EVERYONE ON THE PLANET knows very few superstars want to play with Kobe. Mainly because he's going to take all the shots. This isn't exactly breaking news here.

Finding a guy that WANTS his stats to suffer for an aging Kobe is going to prove to be very DIFFICULT, and you Lakers homers will NEVER see it.

The Lakers will be much better when he retires......and Kobe is NEVER going to retire. He's going to play until his legs fall off or you force him out. And unless he learns to magically share the ball or give up the spotlight, very few franchise level players are going to want to play with him willingly. Dwight Howard JUST proved this, and you all STILL can't figure this out!

As long as Kobe is a Laker, you will see good players, but not true superstars, sign with the Lakers. But as usual, most of you will ignore what everyone else can clearly see because your fandom won't let you consider for a MINUTE that Kobe is a problem.

Is this that same "grapevine" of NBA insiders and players that you can't name, but just expect everyone to believe exists because you say it does?

Ah, the best argument of all.....the "everyone knows" argument!! When one can't back up there statements with actual proof, just say "everyone knows" and that makes it true!!

I'm not trying to prove anything. I just said YOU will NEVER SEE IT - and you don't.

Top FAs, franchise level players, have not signed with the Lakers since Kobe has become what he is. You can deny that all you want, but thats the truth. And no top FA WANTS to sign with Kobe as long as he's chucking it up 25 times a night.

Those type of players WANT the ball.....they want to be top dog. So as long as you have Kobe, you're guaranteed to get second tier type players. That's what you have, and what you get. Continue to duck your head in the sand........

The rest of us in reality see it for what it is.

I hope the Lakers do become much better when he retires, it would be pretty sweet to see the next Lakers regime win more than 5 championships.

Dwight Howard didn't prove shit, Dwight Howard is a well known cancer and drama queen. A lot of you guys spent the better part of 2 years bashing the guy but now all of a sudden his opinion carries weight? Lol.

Kobe's always near the top of all SG's in assists, but the haters have been spitting the same stuff since Kobe came into the league. Nothing new.

You should worry about the fact that everybody and their momma is avoiding Dallas.

You keep saying this, but where's your proof? When was the last time the Lakers had the cap space to go after any free agents? The Lakers have been capped out and paying luxury tax for as long as I can remember!! No free agents have come to the Lakers because they haven't pursued any!! They haven't had the cap space!! That's what you "won't see"!!

You take Dwight leaving and completely ignore how wishy-washy he was in Orlando, the fact that he said that Kobe had nothing to do with his decision, the fact that he said that if Phil were the coach, he'd still be a Laker and then spin it into "it's all Kobe's fault" and claim Laker fans "just don't see it"!!

What is clear for anyone to see is that your statement has no basis in fact and you have nothing to back it up other than you WANT it to be Kobe's fault!!

Exactly!! Dallas has arguably the most player friendly owner in the league (the only owner that would actually scare me in a bidding war with the Lakers) and a superstar in Dirk that openly said that he was willing to take a back seat. Yet free agents aren't exactly lining up to be Mavericks!!:wtf2:

What's up with that? Maybe we should start a thread about how no superstars want to play with Dirk!!

Hey mont!! What does your "grapevine" say about nobody wanting to play in Dallas? Are they afraid Cuban will sell the Mavericks to Jerry Jones?

No grapevine needed but I will ask. I think Cuban blowing up the championship team was a big red flag for a lot of players that want a ring. He also made it painfully obvious he was down with the new reduced spending under the new CBA before it had become palatable to the players. His personality probably turns other people off too.
