Speaking of the salary cap, is there some reason why the Lakers won't pay any luxury tax? They don't have to go full Lacob but if they want to build around LeBron's last years why not pay some tax?

It's not that they won't. It's that their roster construction makes it impossible to do so.

They'd have to move either AD or Russ to be able to do that

Next year. You can't just sign players over the cap, gotta trade for them?

I just meant if we're talking about next year, bringing new guys in with AD and LBJ, why not get Kyrie and one more decent player, even if that means being over the cap for the next couple years? Win now.
I think they will next year.

But, there is a harsher repeaters tax if you go over back to back years.

There is another trigger that I can't remember... like 3 times in a 5 year period or something.

So, stay under this year...because you aren't a contender.

Go over the next few when you are.

Here's a short blurb I found.

Unlike the regular tax rate, the repeat offender tax rate begins at a stunning $2.50/dollar of salary over then increases to $2.75, $3.50 and $4.25 for every additional $5M over the line. After the levied $4.25/dollar of salary over, the NBA charges 50 cents for every additional $5M.

Only using exceptions.

Midlevel, Trade etc.

They can do a sign and trade.

But, that would hard cap them.

Hypothetically....

Say they Traded Westbrook to Indy for Buddy.

They'd get a huge trade exception because of the difference in salary.

They'd be able to exceed the cap to take in a player making that amount or less.

ETA: They can also exceed the cap to keep guys they have bird rights on, obviously.

They don't have Bird rights for anyone other than Russ and Bev. If they managed to trade for guys on expiring deals then they could sign them for over the cap (provided bird rights came with it)

Pretty sure you don't get Bird rights for guys signed on exceptions...so yes just russ and Bev I believe.

It's still early but interesting that jokic has taken a step back this season in terms of usage.

Murray is at 26% usage

Jokic is at 22% usage

The win vs OKC, Jokic had 18% usage which is usually role player level. Murry had 28% usage.

Nuggets also beat Warriors without Murray.

And Murray has a -10BPM which is even worse then Westbrook's -5.9.

Still early, i expect murray to come out of his slump and he at least has the ACL tear excuse. Westbrook is just going to continue to suck.

Dysfunctional vs Dysfunctional tonight with lakers\nuggets, should be interesting.

That's why, even if they somehow end up having enough for a 3rd max level guy, I would prefer they break it up and add 2 or 3 high quality role players.

Just for the sake of argument, let's say they somehow had Westbrooks $47 million available. I would rather see them add 2 or 3 players who fill specific needs, than go after 1 max level guy. Especially since, if memory serves, there won't be any true max level guys available anyway.
Yeah, I can agree with this.

And Irving is possibly still in play, especially if the Nets don't do much winning.

Yeah, they would have had Bog's Bird rights I think if they had traded for him.

I think.

You are correct.

Just those two.

I think it takes 2 years to get early bird rights.

That's what we used to keep Jackson and Batum.

Gave them a bump to about 10 mil per.

Also, what about Reaves?

Does he fall under the Arenas rule?

That one actually confuses the shit out of me.

The Lakers have a much better shot at winning now that RW won't play.

Took them and the 6.5 points.

Why am I the only one who likes that kid?...lol

He needs to be more aggressive.

Some how, he got it into his head that he's a point guard.

Like, I'm not even speculating....he said that's how he sees himself.

But, it must be the Ben Simmons kinda PG because he won't shoot....and it's not because he's afraid.

I love him, I think he has a little Alex Caruso in him.

Of all the 3 deals the Lakers could possibly have for RW.....I like Charlotte's the best.

Rozier and GH. Rozier could be that #3 guy and he is better than almost anybody in the next FA. He has little Bev in him, can score and shoot. GH could be the #4 guy.

All you have to do is wait a few games for Charlotte to crater.

......and they will.

Here's the underrated thing about Rozier....

He already knows how to play off ball and still get his scoring numbers playing next to a ball dominant guard.

Lamelo is not the scorer James is.

But, he has the ball in his hands most often times than not.

Terry is a better offensive player than Bev.

Defense Id give to pat.

Also, if there was any chance you could swap Gordon for Oubre, do it.

Oubre is expiring.

Expected it with Schroder out.
I thought it would be Nunn.

But, he's theoretically better as a shooter/scorer off the bench.

I'd play Nunn, Brown, Lonnie together some.

Ones a shooter * Nunn *, ones a slasher, defender * Brown * and Lonnie gives you some of both and can score.
