I never saw a trade this season. SF can compete with any team in the division now and has built in insurance should Lance show games are over his head at this time. SF would of needed to be blown away with an offer.

That's not true.

SF gets a quality backup. And by keeping him, they will now get a pick for him (comp pick). That comp pick could be as high as a 4th rounder. It made sense for them to do this all along once trading him didnt make sense.

What doesnt make sense is why Jimmy and his agent took this deal. Makes me think that no team with a questionable QB situation (NYG, NYJ, CLE ect) were even interested in him should he hit the FA market. Because that is basically what this move is saying. That Jimmy looked around the league and didnt see a soft landing spot for himself even if he were a FA.

But obviously no one was going to sign him to be a primary backup. If a team like the Browns for instance would have had interest, he would have been cut today and not renegotiated his deal with the 49ers. Remember he had to agree to this new deal keeping him as a backup in a place that clearly didnt want him all that badly except in terms of what they could get for him. Because the Browns give him a way easier path to a decent contract next year than SF ever could.

It actually kind of worked out like it should have in the long run. Jimmy was a fucking idiot and screwed the 49ers by delaying surgery. Well now in the end the 49ers will get a comp pick, have a backup and the only real casualty in the whole situation is Garoppolo's contract next season. Because if he sits behind Lance all year like he is likely to do, he isnt getting crap on the open market next year. He now becomes the next Teddy Bridgewater in FA and not a guy who will be signed to be a starter.
