I don't think he was any less ready than any other QB in his situation. People just got way to focused on the game last week against the Bears when he actually wasn't that bad in that game given the conditions. I mean people bring up the fact it was raining for the Bears too but Fields completed 8 passes for 120ish yards with one of them being an arm punt for a 51 yard TD and 3 were dump offs to the running back so it's not like he crushed it out there either.

Assuming the injury doesn't impact his offseason work it's not the end of the world but it's still a terrible blow to Lance's development and a wasted year on his rookie contract.

I know Jimmy G is the best option for today but we also know his ceiling and that's probably not winning a Super Bowl. That's why you take your lumps with Lance now so you hope he can develop into the guy that wins you the Super Bowl but unless the 9ers win it this year it's just a wasted year for the team and they only benefit if Jimmy G plays well enough a team gives him a somewhat lucrative deal to they could possibly get a 3rd round comp pick.

The NFC is down and you can see it. The freaking Giants are 2-0. There's no reason Jimmy can't give it one more ride.

I'm rooting for Fields as a local guy. We will see how he bounces back.

Jimmy Garporlrorlrrol is the best option for this season (hell 49ers might go deep in the playoffs give how weak the NFC is) but I get what 9ers fans are saying - Trey Lance needs experience. Yah Aaron Rodgers rode the pine as well for a few years, but Rodgers had 2x the amount of pass attempts that Lance had in College. Lance needs to get some playing time. It might've been a lost season while he was getting his sea legs, but the injury was a massive blow to the future of the 9ers franchise today.

Also, when Lance got injured and Jimmy G came in I was like, "Fuck, we lose." LOL. Seattle can't figure out how to stop the run with their new 3-4 D and Gaarprorlrorlrol knows exactly how to play to that weakness (don't turn the ball over and exhaust the game clock).

Two seasons, two injuries in limited minutes (three if you count preseason, with a 4th in high school). One complete season as a starter in high school. One complete season out of three in college. Lance's window to be trusted long term is closing quick (or should be). He needs LOTS OF REPS.

If Jimmy G leads them deep into the playoffs again, why should they move on to Lance? Remember, Shanahan was the OC for RG3 that essentially prematurely ended his career within two seasons.

Hard to argue with anything you said, shopson.

Is there any way that it can turn into a good thing?

Hear me out, the kid has very little experience either in college or pros. Would another year studying on the bench (even if he is in a walking boot) and a full off-season of training be so terrible? Call it a second redshirt year.

Jimmy moves on and he's the undisputed starter next year with nobody looking over his shoulder.
That's the silver lining take but that's another year of his rookie deal wasted, and the only way to really learn how to play QB is to play.

I'm not yet ready to call Lance injury prone yet as two of his injuries have been broken bones and I consider those kinds of injuries bad luck rather than a guy being prone to injuries. I mean it doesn't matter who you are if your ankle twists in a way it's not supposed to twist or your finger slams against a helmet when you throw a ball things are going to break.

With Jimmy it just depends on how he plays in the playoffs because despite the wins he hasn't been very good in them. I have no doubt he can lead them into the playoffs and with a weak NFC to the Super Bowl but I just don't see him beating whoever ends up being the AFC team unless the 9ers running game and defense is standing on their heads.

Yes and no.

Player one is lighter on his feet and doesn’t plant his cleats. When he gets hit low, his feet fly out from under him, no harm done.

Player two plants his cleats quicker so when he gets hit low, his ankle breaks or his ACL/MCL blows out.

It has nothing to do with brittle bones or literal thin skin, it has to do with decisions (diving for the extra yard instead of stepping out of bounds one yard short) or habits/styles of doing basic movements.

Not to say I think he injury prone yet, but I do think most injuries are avoidable to an extant, even if not consciously.

I know little about being injury prone, but I do still think Lance could easily become a top 5 all-time NFL reach and bust

Hard to rate a #3 pick as a top 5 bust all time. Maybe the 9ers paid too much to get the #3, but using that #3 on (for arguments sake) a bust QB has happened numerous times in the history of the game.

That is what I was getting at. This isn't ideal obviously, but it really didn't seem like he was ready at all. He's 22. There are college Seniors and Super-Seniors that are playing next Saturday older than him.

I know high draft picks that you trade a ton of capital for are expected to contribute immediately and perform well. But Aaron Rodgers benefits from 3 years on the pine, while Alex Smith was thrown to the Wolves.
3 of the 4 best (imo) QBs in the NFL started a total of 1 game as rookies.

It goes against the financial benefit of having a QB on a cheap rookie deal. But having an opportunity to develop without pressure is underrated.

Lance would need to call it a career real soon to even top Lions receiver busts like Charles Rogers and Mike Williams.

Or a roided up lineman like Tony Manderich.

SF acted as if they knew something the rest of the league didn't. Your examples were anything but project picks.
Number 3 overall for his limited resume that cost you (3) THREE number one picks should be spined to injury prone if I was a SF fan

It cost them 2 picks. The traded 3 picks, got 1 back. That is a “cost” of 2 picks.

And every team acts on what they think they know. The 9ers are no different in this than anyone else. We’re they wrong? It was a calculated risk. Maybe it pays off, maybe it doesn’t. That is yet to be written. So far, it doesn’t look that great.

But, they better sign a veteran backup since he's young.....not an expensive one, just a solid backup.

Yes but they used the one they got back to draft Lance so it cost the 49ers 3 picks to add Lance to the roster.

Using a pick on a player is never referred to as a cost. The pick itself has no value. It’s value is in the player it turns into. It cost them 2 other players.

If you want to say “it cost them the ability to take Mac Jones”, sure. But that is an opportunity cost, not a cost in itself.

I won't hair split the math. I only said: " I do still think Lance could easily become a top 5 all-time NFL reach and bust"

Yes using a pick on a player is a cost, in this case the cost was 3 picks.
