He now has a no trade clause.

Which seems like it would be harder to trade him.
They just can't trade him without talking to him and him signing off where....

He clearly wouldn't want to play for say.....the Jets, Lions, Jags, Giants, Texans, etc.

Makes sense if you are dropping your price. To put in a no trade clause.
He dropped his price to be on the team but for 6 mil it would have been a lot easier to move him off the team to a place where QBs go to die.
Now only way to get him off the team is to cut him. Which obviously they dont want to do.

Nah, he did that to facilitate a trade....he doesn't want to be there backing up Lance.

Easier to trade somebody with a base of 7 and incentives leading up to 16 mill than somebody making a guaranteed 25 mill. And he could go somewhere and audition for his next contract.
Jimmy G could of waited, been released, then had his choice of teams interested and worked out terms. Looks to me as if he wants to remain a 49er
and will. His new contract works for the 49ers, they got a rookie QB who hasn't impressed and now they have a affordable back up, just in case.

Effectively he had a no-trade clause before. He wasn't going to take a pay cut and then be shipped somewhere he didn't want to go. The no-trade clause is a nothing detail here.

At a vet minimum deal? Nah, he now has 7 mill guaranteed and up to 16 mill, depending on incentives.

Let me try to sort your logic. Best Jimmy could of gotten on the free market ( according to you) was vet minimum and would require no trade capitol, but now after signing his new contract he's highly trade able at a much higher salary and of course would cost some trade capitol. Seriously? That takes some very strange logic.

I think he just took a cut to guarantee he couldn't be tagged next year. Now if Lance fails they can't force JG to stick around. He'll be able to sale himself early in FA, vs waiting until all the seats are filled.

Yeah but all he had to do was wait and he would of been a FA this season. Only reason to work out a new contract was to stick with the 49ers and think the two sides have an agreement that he'll be on the roster all season this year. Has nothing to do with making him trade able as DJ/Mamba implies.

Yes, but if Lance fails, they could've tagged JG in 23. Now they can't.
I doubt he'd get tagged, this just ends the possibility.

"Jimmy, we're trading you to the Lions." John Lynch stared at him intently.

"Alright, I'm going to Detroit!!" yelled Jimmy with great enthusiasm. "They got some weapons. Swift is a great back. I'll be closer to my hometown in Illinois. No one cares about Goff. I'm better than Goff. I'll play for free just to show everyone how good I am!!!"

Lynch then grabbed Jimmy's hand. "I'm sorry, Jimmy. It's not Detroit. We traded you to the BC Lions of the CFL."

His new contract makes him easier to trade but he's only going to get traded if a team's starter gets injured or plays bad.

If Brissett sucks the first couple of games maybe the Browns give the 9ers a call to get Jimmy G to salvage their season until Watson comes back. Or there are a number of contending teams if their starter goes down might consider Jimmy G to keep them in contention.

It's just with his previous salary it basically would've been impossible for some teams to trade for him if they wanted to but now they could probably move some money around restructuring to free up cap space to take on his new contract.

Really seemed like a win-win for both parties.

Makes him easier to trade as far as his salary, but do not think Jimmy signed to make it easier to trade him. Jimmy see opportunity with the 49ers. Lance has yet to impress and now Jimmy salary makes it viable for the 49ers to keep him as insurance in case Lance bombs as a starter. If Lance excels then the 49ers think about trying to trade Jimmy before the deadline for more then the comp value. Makes for an interesting QB situation.

I have full faith in my dynasty QB. Maybe I should pick up Jimmy again. LOL. Gotta check if someone has him already. But then again, I don't know who I'd drop. I like Malik Willis, too.

It's not about Jimmy seeing an opportunity with the 9ers it really boils down to him getting to free agency with as high as value as he can. The 9ers are most likely the ones that would give him the most money and if he did have to play at least it's in a situation he knows he can do well in.

That's why he has the no trade clause because he wants to make sure he doesn't get sent to some garbage team that would tank his value in free agency. Same reason he wanted the no tag clause because he didn't want the 9ers to tag him in an attempt to trade him.

So from Jimmy's POV and really doesn't matter what scenario plays out. If he doesn't play a snap he's fine, if he starts games for the 9ers he's fine, and if he gets traded to a team that he approves of he's fine.

In fact he might see his best scenario as one where he doesn't take a snap because his value probably can't and won't go up any higher so he's rather sell his 2021 season than risk lowering his value by getting hurt again or not play quite as well.

Well I don't agree with you in the slightest. He certainly would of made more as a free agent this season, seeing there are teams hurting at QB. The Browns for one time could of used Jimmy as a starter with Watson being suspended and the team having aspirations to be competitors now and having a large amount of cap space and certainly teams like the Falcons, Seahawks ( even though I would object to signing him), maybe the Texans. Before trading for Mayfield the Panthers certainly would of been in the hunt, Jets are another team, maybe the Giants. Lots of possibilities for a QB who started in the NFC championship last season.

The only logical reason to rework his contract for the 49ers IMO is he believes he'll be starting at some point this season for the 49ers and it's not like that is out of the question as Lance has so little experience at the QB position he's just plum raw as raw can be. If Jimmy doesn't end up starting it certainly doesn't raise his value at all for next season, especially with the draft next season being strong at QB with several who will get drafted early and be very cheap cap wise vs signing a vet wanting a payday.

When I'm talking about free agency I'm talking about next year not this previous free agency period.

If he didn't have the surgery he would've been traded months ago. If John Lynch is to be believed he said had 2 or 3 teams with serious interest but the surgery killed off any trade interest and by the time Jimmy was recovered teams had already spent their money and set their QB rooms. So any trade now will be the result of a QB injury to a contender or poor QB performance which is more the Browns case.

Jimmy not playing this season doesn't lower his value either and there are always openings for an average to above-average starter for a team that wants to win games sooner rather than later or aren't in position to get the rookie QBs that they would want.

So for Jimmy if he plays or doesn't play he's good either way and if he does play he wants to make sure it's for a team that won't harm his value when free agency rolls around. From his POV the 9ers are a good spot if he plays because he knows the system and players and he knows he can at least maintain the value he currently has. Not to mention he's probably making about what he'd make if not more if he was just released and hit the market.

I think his main motivation to stay with the 9ers is that he looked at his options, they were terrible, so it's better to roll it back and focus on free agency next season rather than get stuck with a lousy team for a season and hurt your chances for a bigger payday in free agency.

His contract expires and Trey Lance is the future.....

Where does he go? Vote and discuss.
Starting for San Francisco.
I'm doubtful about Lance working out.
