but with players salaries ..maybe going up....i still like a trade..over free agents....but the ..mariners need both...what ever....the rules are..teams will..
tank...its just the way it is in sports..in general.......you know you cant go to the playoffs....like oakland..there system..was just spent...

cubs in re-build...i don tknow..really where they are at...with that
cinncy..in bounce back mode...........
pirates..in re-build...and will be till they start there pitching rotation..over
san diego..had a 1st round...of im back...now trying for a 2nd round..and loose hosmer
colorado.....it seems is always in the twilight ..ZONE...i dont know why...they have had good teams...there pitching..is always...so-so
mets..in lets add it mode....
K.C. shuold start adding soon
baltimore...not yet there with pitching..

this is 15 teams..1/2 right now

If he could have given us 3 or 4 playoff runs, yes. People worry about the back end of the contracts when we should just be happy if we get 2+ playoff runs after 20 years of none.
That's fair.

I did want Semien, and I could just be trying to convince myself it's not a big deal we lost out but I do find it suspect that Semien went from hitting .249/.310/.403/.713 with 75 HRs in his first 643 games to hitting .263/.346/.509/.854 with 85 HRs in his last 377 games. It's worth wondering if perhaps he started drinking Robinson Cano's Dominican Milkshakes the last few seasons...

We don't know how much they will spend. Remember last offseason? They were not within $100M of our expectations.
I honestly didn't really expect them to spend last offseason under the assumption they would spend this offseason. I mean let's be honest, not even Dipoto thought the team would win 90 games this year. Hindsight being 20/20, they should've spent last offseason, but the 2020 Mariners didn't exactly give the otherwise frugal ownership group any reason to open up their wallets.

Yes and IMO a rather easy yes. A position of great need, with zero organizational depth unless I guess you couldn’t include Toro. Semien is the guy they should have gotten and should’ve been option 1-insert number, then a 3B then a pitcher. Frazier is a great upgrade from last year but essentially puts Seattle in the same position next year where a priority in the off-season is 2B.
I guess I'll defer to you and @NWinAZ on this one...

Well lets all hope that Semien plays like the the guy he was before 2019 because this one will sting for years watching him play against the Mariners.

I agree with this as well. My point was not to let the length of contract from signing him, but if you question his ability going forward then pass. I mentioned it before that he played nearly half his games in a AAA field this past year.

I really like the Robbie Ray signing a lot.

I know I just posted about how I was suspect about Marcus Semien's transformation but there is a lot to like about adding Ray. He always had walk issues but made adjustments in his physique and his mechanics that led to a career low walk rate. I was also very pleasantly surprised to learn that Ray actually has the highest career strikeout per 9 innings pitched ratio at 11.21. That's ahead of Chris Sale, Yu Darvish, Jacob deGrom, Randy Johnson, literally every guy known for striking guys out.

I also love that he seems really hyped to be here.

How Ray went from good to elite took a change in his mechanics, a change in his approach and a change in his physique.

Let’s start with his physical transformation. During the offseason, Ray undertook a rigorous workout regime. Looking to add muscle, and inspired by football’s two-a-day workouts, Ray decided to start lifting weights twice a day — morning and night — seven days a week. He did research to make sure it was fine to do it — it was, as long as he was getting all the nutrients his body needed — and since he re-signed with the Blue Jays nearly as soon as the offseason started, he consulted with the team’s training staff throughout the winter.

“I tried it out for the first week and I was pretty sore,” he said. “But then after that first week, I just stayed on it and stayed with it and slowly the soreness started to go away and I was able to start lifting more, start lifting heavier and start getting more explosive and it was just something that worked out for me.”

When he arrived for spring training, Ray had noticeably bulked up and, as part of his four-day routine between starts, Ray continues his upper and lower body workouts.

The result is Ray’s throwing harder than he has since 2016, averaging 94.7 mph on his four-seam fastball, while topping out at 98.8 mph, the best it’s ever been. His slider is averaging a career-best 88.3 mph, per Brooks Baseball. He’s also shown his best stamina, averaging at least six innings per game, per Baseball-Reference, the most in any season.

Good point.

Honestly I had forgot how bad the Rangers were last year until I saw they had spent half a billion dollars on Seager and Semien.

Idk why but I always feel weird about guys hitters who go from nobodies to superstars overnight. There are plenty of guys who have done it, but I guess it just gives me pause.

I like the Ray signing as well. I would have loved to have added Stroman along with it pushing all our current pitchers one spot back where they belong. I don't think there is another #2 out there in free agency, but a deal could be made I suppose but you have to look at these prices for starting pitching and think real hard about giving up cheap future starters.

I do too so you are not alone. I would have loved adding Escobar for 3B. Mets did a great job IMO on their 3 signings. Low cost relatively speaking and just good pros.

I read that the Mariners have interest in Trevor Story. How do you guys feel about that?

I don't think it would be a great idea. After reading that we were interested, I went to look at his career splits hoping I'd see that his numbers weren't inflated by playing at Coors Field, but unfortunately they are.

Story at home: 375 G, 100 doubles, 21 triples, 95 HRs, 279 RBIs, .303/.369/.603/.972
Story away: 370 G, 80 doubles, 6 triples, 63 HRs, 171 RBIs, .241/.310/.442/.752

Unfortunately I think that any contract offer given to him has to be with the expectation that his numbers away from Coors are reflective of the player that he is. MLBTR has a projected contract of 6 years $126m. I don't know if a .241 hitter away from Coors is someone worth that kind of money.

Now that I've said that, once the lockout or whatever ends we'll agree to a contract with him

I again have reservations on him but not because of Coors so much though I get your point. I just see how he regressed last year and injuries are starting to add up for him. I mean he would be a big improvement from what we have, but are you willing to give up $25M a year of your self imposed payroll limit for an iffy star? Maybe...maybe not.

I would go after Suzuki at $11M p/y and then add Bryant and trade for a #2 SP. Deal Kelenic for Reynolds (ya you talked me into it).

I like Polanco, but it still means addition with subtraction involved unlike free agency. But I also think it is clear guys are running to sign with us so maybe time to crank up the old Dipoto trade machine.
