I like the Ray signing as well. I would have loved to have added Stroman along with it pushing all our current pitchers one spot back where they belong. I don't think there is another #2 out there in free agency, but a deal could be made I suppose but you have to look at these prices for starting pitching and think real hard about giving up cheap future starters.
I see why you would like to add another top of the line starting pitcher but I'd actually be pretty comfortable with the rotation going into 2022 even if the only other addition is a #5 pitcher. Right now we'd be looking at a rotation like this:

Robbie Ray: 2.84 ERA
Marco Gonzales: 3.96 ERA (improved after coming back from injury with a 2.61 ERA in his last 12 starts)
Chris Flexen: 3.61 ERA
Logan Gilbert: 4.68 ERA (I'd be surprised if we don't see a big jump from him next year
???: George Kirby could be an option here.

Something that hasn't been discussed much is the bullpen. I almost wonder if that is being overlooked with how strong our bullpen was this year. My reason for concern here is the fact that most of the guys we had pitching really well were essentially nobodies before last year.

Problem with Kirby and Hancock is their innings over the last to years. Kirby 67.2 over last 2 seasons and Hancock 68.2 in last 2 years. Hard to stretch those guys out over a full MLB season I would think. Maybe not.

I have the same bullpen worry. No name guys who come out of nowhere usually return to nowhere right after. Good news is the 2 guys coming off DL in Giles and Munoz.

I read that the Mariners have interest in Trevor Story. How do you guys feel about that?

I don't think it would be a great idea. After reading that we were interested, I went to look at his career splits hoping I'd see that his numbers weren't inflated by playing at Coors Field, but unfortunately they are.

Story at home: 375 G, 100 doubles, 21 triples, 95 HRs, 279 RBIs, .303/.369/.603/.972
Story away: 370 G, 80 doubles, 6 triples, 63 HRs, 171 RBIs, .241/.310/.442/.752

Unfortunately I think that any contract offer given to him has to be with the expectation that his numbers away from Coors are reflective of the player that he is. MLBTR has a projected contract of 6 years $126m. I don't know if a .241 hitter away from Coors is someone worth that kind of money.

Now that I've said that, once the lockout or whatever ends we'll agree to a contract with him
Problem with Story is the years on the deal because playing for the Rockies. I would give him $25 a year easily but if he is asking for more money ideally he would be ok with taking less years. 3 years with $75-80 million I think would be solid. To me, Bryant is option A. but Story is a solid option B. If they miss on both, then Jerry needs to offer Oakland most of the farm for Chapman and Olson.

Injuries, regression, the fact that he'd be moving from short to third, and the home away splits have me concerned that we'd be paying star money to a guy who wouldn't be the player he was in Colorado. I know that the splits don't concern you as much, but the fact that he plays in probably the best hitters park in baseball tells me it's not just that he's more comfortable at home but that Coors really does inflate his numbers at the plate.

Call me crazy but if you're going to break the bank on a SS and move them to third, I'd rather it be Carlos Correa. It would never happen but I would rather give Carlos Correa 10 years $320m (what MLBTR has projected) than give Trevor Story 6 years $126m.

More realistically, I'd like to see them do what you proposed. Add Suzuki for $11m a year, sign Bryant for whatever it costs and put him at third and move Kelenic for Reynolds (although there isn't any reason to believe that will happen).

I have to end by saying that I think this is the first time I convinced you of anything... You start drinking or something? Lol
Oddly he hit 2 more homers on the road in less AB's but he also hit .93 points lower on the road. .62 points lower for his career. I worry about him. Escobar was the miss in my book. Trade for Chapman and Manea is fine with me.

No you have convinced me of a lot of things and no drinking is involved. :suds:

Good point.

I wouldn't be too concerned if we don't add another starter, but I see your logic.

I would still take Castellanos over Story as well though it doesn't help the 3B issue.

I agree that Bryant should be option A.

Here's a hypothetical for you: Would you still be willing to give Story that contract if his career away batting stats is what we will get from him?

My thought process is that Story would be the hitter you see on the road if we traded for him. I'd rather Chapman be plan B. Here's a wild idea, what about trading for Jose Ramirez if he were to be available?

I actually went to look at Story's 2021 splits to confirm that was correct. Ironically even though he hit more HRs on the road, the fact that he hit .203 on the road last year just terrifies me even more.

I guess he hasn’t ever really come up so I haven’t thought about it. I’d take just trading for Olson and just sticking France back at 3B. My prediction is either the opening day starter at 3B with be Bryant or unfortunately Toro.

My Plan A: (It changes from day-to-day)

1- Sign Bryant ($27p/y)
2- Sign Cruz for 1 year ($12 p/y)
3- Sign Rodon ($25 p/y)
4- Sign Suzuki ($11 p/y)

$75M p/y + Ray $23M p/y + Current $50M = $148M which is still low but leaves plenty of room to add.

Live with Toro at 3rd if his defense is average+.
Or Trade for Chapman if not up for Toro.

Other option is:

If willing to move to move France to 3B, then you can look at Rizzo.

Isn’t Castillo coming back? I like Giles and Munoz both but I don’t think they can be penciled in as the closer and set up guy at least for the first few months. And IMO the Mariners still need a lefty in the bullpen.

Olson and Chapman and France to DH wouldn't hurt my feelings.

Ya we do need a good lefty. Munoz is ready to fire. Giles probably out to start the season is my guess as well.

If Oakland is willing to give up both I think all prospect are on the table outside of JRod and they can only have Hancock or Kirby not both. IMO the whole goal of this off-season was to make Marte tradable

I could see a Marte trade for them adding probably an odd man out pitching prospect and guys like Trammell and Sheffield.

In this scenario I'd be happy putting Bryant at third.

By Cruz, do you mean Nelson Cruz? Man that idea hasn't been floated but I can't say I wouldn't absolutely love seeing him play for us again.

If you pay Bryant, then Cruz would be a cheaper add. Yes Nelson. Nelson Cruz.
