I watched The Conjuring 3 last night.... to be blunt, I did not think it was very good at all. I was very disappointed, but I am going to sit on it for a while and probably watch it again before I even attempt a real review.

I thought it was enjoyable enough but nowhere near the level of the first 2. I felt it was way more over the top and relied much more heavily on modern horror schtick instead of building the dread and creepiness. Outside of the 2 main characters you could not have cared less about anyone else in the movie. Enjoyable but not if you're using the first 2 as your barometer.

Damn. I was counting on that actually being as good as the first two. I'm sure I'll still watch it though.

There has been a lack of good horror in recent months. At least A Quiet Place 2 seems to be a decent one.

well I have read on them and the impression I got was like....

yes Annabelle doll is real and a demon has attached itself, the story involving the roommates at the beginning of the movies is real, but the story in the movies themselves are highly exaggerated or outright made up. The Conjuring families are real, the events are exaggerated.

idk man, I was reading about them before. I never saw something that said they were outright fraudsters or admitted to lying about anything though.
It will never not amuse me that the real Annabelle doll was converted from this goofy thing into the one in the movies:

Even if the movie itself isn't as good, there are still infinite pleasures in watching Patrick Wilson & Vera Farmiga "x-files" their way through a haunting mystery... An all-star duo that I would watch together in any genre.

Absolutely, both actors have a unique charisma about them. Vera was great in Bates Motel as well.

Oh, I know. That is very weird. I was looking for a replica size annabelle doll to scare my kids with, but the closest thing I could find was like $500.... fuck that. And I don't want the cabbage-patch version he that isn't how my kids recognize Annabelle lol.

See I didn't really get that vibe either and sadly, I distinctly remember thinking that Wilson and Farmiga weren't on their normal game either. I attribute it more to the writing and direction though. There is some straight-up silly, bad, dumb, ill-timed dialogue from what I remember. Some attempts at jokes that were poorly put in and also ill-timed with the vibe of the film.

Carey and Chad Hayes were the original writers and I think it shows not having them on here as well as missing Wan from behind the camera.

Another gripe I have and Idk if anyone else felt like this, but every scene felt like a staged set. Not much looked natural and it is really weird when you feel like you notice that, it's hard to buy into what is happening.

I still plan on watching it again for a real review, but those are only a couple of the immediate takeaways I had that are at least relevant to your post lol.

Ummmmmm..............I'm assuming that is a joke, but the article seems to be serious.

My big question is how does RZ "do his thang", turn the Munsters' clan into horrible, despicable "white" trash, and turn the (presumably) disgusting antagonists into sympathetic characters.

I'm guessing whatever studio backing they have gets pulled at some point in pre-production when the suits sober up and realize what this will be.

But hey, at least we would certainly get a return of Dragula!

Yea if I were putting a bet on it I’d say this gets yanked in pre-production. Much like a couple of his other “projects”

I remember he was going to do a drama/true story called Broad Street Bullies about the Philadelphia Flyers of the 70's but it just never came to fruition for whatever reason.

I wondered if maybe just attaching Rob Zombie's name to a project would guarantee a decent return on a lower budget. But I guess not as his last 4 movies seem to be box office failures.

I thought about it and though I admitably I did skip both 31 and 3 From Hell, I would probably watch RZ's The Munsters even if it was a trainwreck. I don't know why but the thought of watching RZ fail in the comedy genre is intriguing to me, and I don't know that the humor is going to work.

(*Note: anyone who has seen RZ's animated The Haunted World of El Superbeasto will attest that his ideas of jokes are at the very, very best hit and miss. I have no idea how it had a $10 million budget.)

So I tried to watch the movie again and I ended up falling asleep, all I want to do is rant about it lol.

Not sure how to go about this...

1. The characters suck, you end up not caring about anyone and sadly, I feel the same about the leads.
2. Steals the priest's arrival scene from The Exorcist. Could be paying homage, but the movie was so bad it seems disrespectful now lol.
3. Everything looks like a staged set ESPECIALLY the outdoor scenes. Nothing looks real.
4. CGI rats? Go fuck yourself.
5. It's not a possession, but it's sort of a possession. It's a totem linked to the kid, found under the house, but apparently, it is like a vampire and can enter other people if they are invited. So aside from causing the leads to seek out the priest, I see no real reason for the totem.
6. I didn't feel like really anything was explained. A witch is using magic to conjure demons, take control of others, etc... it feels like a cop out compared to the real supernatural vibe you get from the others. Never mind that I don't really recall a reason for her at all. Just a satan worshipper IIRC. I don't remember, it's just not good lol.
7. Writing/dialogue is bad. Like I mentioned, there are a fair amount of joke attempts, but it doesn't work with this film in my opinion. Seems out of place and character.
8. It attempts to give us some back story on the Warrens and how they met, but it feels completely pointless and wasted.
9. It uses 'creepy' cliches like someone that was laying down is not sitting up and starts staring and singing a weird song. Lame.
10. Poor use of jump scares and too many attempts.
11. Direction is just bad in my opinion. And I don't feel like Chaves really knew or understood the characters or what people liked about the first two films.
12. It isn't really a supernatural film annnnd it isn't really a detective film in my opinion (I read some people were comparing it to that). It is a movie that has not real direction on what it is trying to do. I imagine that anything that is liked in this movie is sold by Wilson and Farmiga, though as I mentioned, I felt the direction hurt their acting too.
13. Some scenes that are trying to scare, feel disconnected. In the beginning, one of the first scenes, the possessed boy is being put to bed, he hears some noise that perks his attention, then some immediate LOUD banging (ok, I can dig that). He freaks out, runs to the bathroom and hops into the tub closing the shower curtain. From there he hears something faint, looks up and sees the hand looking like shower curtain rings... you may think this is going to lead to a jump scare of a demon appearing. You would be wrong. The hand is never noticed or seen again. Instead, the knobs start turned by themselves and turn on the water, but... it's blood. The boy starts screaming and the adults come running. This is how I picture this scene being developed....

person 1: we need something scary when the kid is in the bathroom, what do you think?
person 2: well, what if he looks up and sees nothing but shower curtain rings, but then it moves and the rings were demon fingers.
person 1: ok, I like where your head is at. Then things start moving on their own.
person 2: yeah, that's a given, it has to happen. How about the knobs to the shower?
person 1: oh yeah, good stuff and you know what comes out...
both in unison: blood!!!

It just all felt jumbled and never came together and I felt that way through a lot of the scenes. Oh and watch the contortion scene in the beginning (shortly after the scene I described) and tell me the bone cracking sound is not over used... my flipping goodness. I could go on and on lol.

There are some things that look good though. The scene where Arne is freaking out and falls down, seeing the red light in the window.... I thought the red light thing was stupid, but when it goes out, the dude is running at him on all fours (which is when Arne stabs him), I thought that 5 second part looked cool lol. There are some others, but honestly not many. Like I said, I tried watching it a second time with my 9 year old, I fell asleep and she told me it was boring and not scary at all... but she liked it lol.

Fuck that movie.

Anyway, I also watched...

Tragedy Girls

imdb synopsis: A twist on the slasher genre, following two death-obsessed teenage girls who use their online show about real-life tragedies to send their small mid-western town into a frenzy, and cement their legacy as modern horror legends.

Basically, a pair of friends have a true-crime blog called 'Tragedy Girls'. They devise a plan to catch a local serial killer so that he can teach them how to do it so that they can control their product a little better, taking out anyone that seems to take the spotlight off of them lol. It is a fun film. It is paced well, the acting is fine (Alexandra Shipp is gorgeous with an incredible smile, it's ok... she's 29 lol), the production is good. It's just got a good, fun vibe to the whole thing without having a ton of comedy. There isn't much to blood, gore, or effects, but what little it shows, looks good... and it is really only one scene lol.

I have said enough in this post after ranting about the movie above, but the Tragedy Girls is a decent good watch. 6.5/7 - 10.
