Guess it's as an accurate of a reason as any, but it was always my understanding that whoever completed the the 5th inning with the lead which would never be surrendered gets the win no matter what - even if the reliever only tossed 1/3 of an inning, but it was the last out of the 5th. There must have been some kind of change made in the rules that factors "effectivity" into the equation.This might be the reason, but not 100% sure.
