Thinkin we're going to watch Sputnik (2020) & Relic (2020) tonight. Both look fantastic & there's HD versions of both online.

That's disappointing! Whomever made that trailer deserves high praise!

Thanks for the heads up though!

Anything redeemable about it? Cgi/fx? Jump scares?

Good news is I made it about halfway through. 4 or 5 people died but you only saw one and it was lame. It was a little slow, acting below average...just nothing about it excited me other than the trailer/title. I think this could have been something decent with more budget but a dud

Tried watching Relic weeks ago...it seemed kind of slow and with our new dog didn’t get to keep focus. Tell me what you think or if I should give it a try.

That was dreadfully slow with almost zero teeth to it. Very dry experience and wouldn't recommend it. And to top it all off it ends without telling you much of anything about what any of it meant. Just a bunch of symbolism that really doesn't have much meaning. The final scene was just f*ckin weird.
Essentially the old lady chases her daughter & granddaughter around some labyrinth of closets behind the walls of the house. Her skin eventually rots to the point of falling off before the mom helps peel it off her entire body. Whats left is this withered old black shadow person. Then the mom & daughter proceed to cuddle with it on the bed before the granddaughter sees some mold on the mom's shoulder... lights turn out and we get a final shot of the octagonal stained glass window covering in mold. I was so confused that I didn't even try to understand the symbolic meaning. I mean, wtf!? Basically is what we're left with is a house (or window?) that consumes it's owner? And passes on from generation to generation?

Lol... I may have missed some dots or deeper rooted meaning... But honestly I was pretty bored with this movie by the time the final climactic scene started.

Didn't get around to watching Sputnik (2020)... We were bored to tears after watching Relic (2020) and we were wanting something easier to watch that didn't demand our attention... Didn't want to get invested into a subtitled film lol.

So we went with this instead:

Black Water: Abyss (2020)

Not bad at all. Sorta silly but still fun. Felt like The Descent (2005) meets Black Water (2007) or Rogue (2007). In the end I didn't care much for the unnecessary character conflicts, because it didn't provide any sort of twist or character conflict triumphs. Nor did it drive any decision making. Just a needless drama plug I guess? Still an entertaining survival thriller film.

@Blackshirts BLVD - I know you asked me "elsewhere" but I wanted to bump this post below for you... Probably a little out of date now so hopefully most are still on there. Let me know if there's anything you come across on Netflix or elsewhere that you need a 2nd opinion on.

Right now my favorites on Netflix:

The Ritual (2017) - 9/10... Creature feature. Great mix of scare & suspense.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) - 9/10... One helluva underrated supernatural horror gem. Crazy story meshed with great amounts of scare & suspense.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) - 9/10... More suspenseful & psychologically terrifying than outright scary. And a very slow burn. Strangely visceral experience though that leaves you feeling disturbed.

Insidious (2010) - 8.5/10... Supernatural horror with a very clever story. Lots of jump scares, but good tense atmosphere throughout.

The Ring (2002) - 8.5/10... Everyone's seen this.

The Girl With All the Gifts (2016) - 8.5/10... Zombie flick done right.

The Boy (2016) - 8/10... Sort of a run of the mill supernatural horror film with the same scare tactics you've seen hundreds of times until the final act that blows up the formula. Honestly if it weren't for the ending I wouldn't be mentioning this film lol. I loved it for it, but most people were pretty "meh" about it.

The Invitation (2015) - 8/10... Psychological thriller with good twists & turns. Tense & unnerving.

The Babysitter (2017) - 8/10... Not scary or suspenseful, but wicked fun. Horror comedy featuring Samara Weaving (Ready Or Not).

As Above, So Below (2014) - 7.5/10... Found footage survival horror/thriller. Great supernatural elements.

Hush (2016) - 7.5/10... Home invasion thriller. More suspense than scare, but well worth it. Some unique elements at play that sets it apart.

The VVitch (2015) - 7.5/10... Period horror done right. Slow paced, tense atmosphere, creepy & uneasy. Not everyone's cup of tea.

Would You Rather (2012) - 7.5/10... Probably too gory for your tastes, but pretty wild movie.

Before I Wake (2016) - 7.5/10... Dark fantasy, Archetypal fantasy stories meet traditional supernatural horror elements. Layered story with great acting. Decent scare tactics & suspense.

Train To Busan (2016) - 7/10... Zombie flick. Foreign film, subtitled in English, but well worth it. If you like Zombie flicks, then this is top notch quality (apart from maybe the acting lol).

Creep (2014) - 7/10... Psycho slasher shot in first-person style. Mark Duplass simply brilliant. The plot is fairly forgettable, but his performance was very memorable. If you like this then check out the sequel Creep 2 (2017), which is also on Netflix. Just as good in terms of Duplass' role, but they play up the strange bits a little too far.

The Endless (2017) - 7/10... Strange story that burns slowly for 30-45mins but races to the finish line. Great visuals & sci-fi elements if you can understand the supernatural elements at play. Sort of a crazy puzzle, that doesn't necessarily end up making any sense, but you're still glad you watched it. Fairly low budget, and the acting is a bit dry.

Sweetheart (2019) - 7.10... Pretty neat low budget creature feature.

If you've depleted this list, then let me know and I'll drum up a Prime list for you. I think @Taddy Mason did a pretty good Prime list some time ago... But fortunately for us, the Hoop search function has been on the fritz and we'd have to dig for it.

Just watched the Child's Play remake from last year. Thought it was okay but didn't think that Buddi/Chucky was all that intimidating, at least compared to the original Chucky. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again but I've definitely seen a lot worse.

Watched 1BR on Netflix, pretty predictable but better than I was anticipating. Worth a throwaway watch if you have nothing else to watch.

Well if the Hoop search function would work as intended I could share my review to pep up the gumbo... All I can remember specifically about my review is that I loved it.

Edit: Nevermind... Only took me 30s or so to find it: Horror Movies

I think I liked the original better because the premise of a serial killer doll trying to possess a young boy felt different. There’s been plenty of AI gone rogue movies out there, though I will say I thought Mark Hamill did a good job as the voice (but don’t think I’d prefer anyone over Brad Douriff to be honest).

The original will always hold a special place, and I wouldn't even want to compare the 2 because both are good for different reasons, and especially so in regards to the different eras they were produced. Different enough to make them special in their own ways & unique enough to consider them as 2 separate movies. But I get it. Reboots are inherently going to come with the comparison.

Douriff is a damn legend. I would have preferred him in the reboot as well.

I’ve certainly seen worse reboots, that’s for sure (NOES, though I don’t blame Jackie Earle Haley for that disaster). But at least I’ll give this one credit: I didn’t really hate any of the characters that I was supposed to like. But I’m interested in the tv show with the Brad Douriff Chucky, to see if they stay true to the series (not so much the ones that were pure comedy) like Ash vs Evil Dead did.
