the baseline or the service line? Standing on the baseline is the norm for me.

probably a little taller. I see this guy maybe once a year at districts or sectionals. He plays in DC.

Stand on the service line and hit down the line or drop shot returns. Also if he plays way behind the baseline hit short underhand serves to him to bring him in.

These are both bad ideas.

What I meant was standing either at the line where the server usually stands while serving or slightly inside it. This is an aggressive stance and sends a message across the net that you are not afraid of his serve. It creates an uncomfortable pressure on the server. Also reduces the distance between the returner and the bounce of the serve so you have a quicker response to returning it and he has less time to come to the net.

I used to play hockey. Watching is fine, but you really can't understand the beauty of the game until you've actually suited up and played.

Get off your couch and play once in a while. It's worth it.

you want me to serve underhand in a USTA tournament? No.

and do you know how difficult it is to return a serve from the service line at this level? I have tried SABER-ing serves on occasion, but the risk of trying to return a serve from the service line is not worth the reward.

gotcha

and yea, that's what I should have been doing...but I was actually handling the serve pretty well. Plus, he was able to move the serve around on me, which made it tougher.

Fair enough. Its not for everyone. I actually do it to 4.5 players. Drives them nuts. Obviously you dont want to do it against a huge server, but to someone who is junkballing. The underhand serve is to keep people from returning your serve from way behind the baseline. You would only have to do it once or twice and they will be on top of the baseline after that.

oh you're one of those players.

I hate players who do that.

Actually if you can read his service motion well and can tell 3/4 times where he is gonna go standing back is not a bad idea because you can set up your “whack-a-mole” shot and just end the point.

the only reason I would move up would be to take away his angle on the serve. But he could easily read my plan and just go up the middle. There is a risk either way, but I think I had a much better chance of returning it if I stood at the baseline as opposed to trying to cut it off.

I think even your receiving stance should be mixed up with standing way back at times and standing inside the baseline at other times.

A lot of players serve to the backhand side of their opponents to create an advantage. I have done the running around the backhand to hit down the line winners off of the forehand many times depending on the opponent. It’s being familiar with the game of your foe.

sometimes you also have the instinct of when to apply the right tactic that can cause a double fault or a crack on his service game.

Most people who buy new equipment to improve their game would find their money better spent on lessons.
you'd be surprised what buying a racquet that better fits your swing would do though.

Lessons always help, but if you are swinging something that is too heavy or has a string pattern that doesn't help you generate spin and power when you need it, you could be a disadvantage.

I have a ball machine, but it needs an outlet to work...so I was considering getting one of these. Seems legit.

I've been using the GF's racquet, and can tell a difference. Mine was kind of shitty, though.

But my fundamentals aren't very good, so I'm working on those. At least I have decent footwork.
