Zion Williamson Almost Didn't Enter 2019 NBA Draft, Wanted to Return to Duke

New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson said he wanted to spend another season at Duke and waited all the way until the deadline for underclassmen to declare before officially entering the 2019 NBA draft.

Williamson explained during an appearance on The JJ Redick Podcast with his Pelicans teammate he knew Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski wouldn't let him return, and conversations with his mom, step dad and teammates helped finalize his decision despite his desire to remain in college:

I heard this on the DP Show this morning,

Look, there's no way he was turning down the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft, but he was so much fun to watch at Duke it would have been awesome if he came back for another year!

Exactly my thought! I bet if he wasn't hurt this year and actually playing he wouldn't have said what he did

Honestly I think so as well and I'm a Duke fan. IF he stayed at 4 years he'd be much better. But you can't pass up 1st pick money

Heard about this, yeah I think he would of been better off doing that. On another note when is he due back to the NBA?

Man I don't get the discontent players have for New Orleans.

Anthony Davis wanted out and did get out, Zion hasn't sounded like he wanted to be there, ever. Why not? New Orleans is a GREAT city and I think there is a hidden niche of a great basketball support there. I think the city and fans just need some consistent winning and good branding and it could become a big basketball market.

They sort of are getting the marketing down, they have a fun style of play with the run and shoot, they just need the consistent winning. Zion could be a dominant player and you combine everything New Orleans has going for it and he could own that city and garner huge amount of support.

Just suprising so many players seem to want out fast down there.
