EG said they miscalculated I see where Angels need pitching more than a 3B. One writer said a 7 year was on the table from Rangers but I have not seen that.

Looks like LAA motivation was partially to keep TX from getting him ala Beltre.
I hope this comes back to bite them

I realize I'm probably alone on this hill, but $35m/year for 7 years is an overpay for Rendon, and would have hated for the Rangers to pull the trigger on that. The only way that move makes sense is if the Rangers are a piece or two away from seriously contending, and they are nowhere near that.
I get this but to have TA come out and say 5 years only is an insult to the fan base. Time will tell if the pass wa correct

The cost-of-living index for CA 136 vs 90 for TX. And they have a state income tax of 12% vs TX 0.

So if the Rangers offered about $200 mil for 6 years, our offer is actually better than the Angels.

Fantastic point. As I've discovered over the past 16 hours, math seems to be really hard for a lot of baseball fans.

Wouldn't be surprised at all to find out the Angels were trying to drive up the price, only to have their bluff called and their offer accepted.

It's all well and good to piss and moan about the Rangers ownership and front office... but the Angels have thrown hundreds of millions at free agents and they developed the best player in the game, and they have exactly ONE postseason appearance to show for it.

But Rendon to the Angels — for seven years and $245 million?

OK, now it’s time for the head-scratching portion of Scott Boras’ winter-meetings deal-a-palooza.

When I asked folks from other teams Wednesday night what they thought of the move, here’s the word they used repeatedly:

Pressure.

The Angels are a team and a front office feeling intense pressure – not just to win, but to do something big

As one NL executive put it, it feels a little too much “like they were making a big move whether it was the best thing for their club or
the difference between Texas and LAA is that Moreno had the balls to make this move and now he will have to add pitching like Bumgarner or Ryu or Keuchel or maybe even 2 of them and he'll do it, and the Texas ownership doesn't have any balls and never actually intended on signing Rendon.
hell, the top move of the off-season for the Rangers is the signing of Gibson followed by the signing of Lyles. that's it

only in final numbers that he would see but he and his team had stated he was wanting 7 years before Boros and the Rangers talked and the Rangers played small ball and lost. if they had offered 7 years and maybe 230M they might have got him

I sort of leaned this way last night in that even though I am hacked by the fact that we may have never actually been in the running for Rendon that the Angels have had a habit of lately of making really bad decisions. They are sexy but do nothing for the team overall. I mean they paid a boatload to one of the best players in the game and finished behind us. Their need is pitching. That is most teams needs. We may some under the radar moves in Minor and Lynn and they turned out well and maybe Gibson and Lyles will be too. I wanted Rendon in the worst way but we need to wait and see how things wash out this off season and see if we have put together a solid TEAM.

I am sorry, but I have seen enough.

Kudos to the Angels, they took care of business. Sure they need pitching, but Rendon will be a star for a long time. That will give them plenty of opportunity to acquire pitching. We weren't going to be that great the first year or two that he was here either.

The agents cut doesn't take that into consideration. The prestige factor doesn't take that into consideration either.

Also, those taxes aren't as cut and dried as they seem. Most states charge taxes for road teams visiting them. It is a very complex issue.

It has always been the case that players and agents don't care about tax rates. That is simply a diversion tactic.

Rendon, Stasburg, and Cole got what they were worth according to the market. If you, as an owner or as a GM, cannot live with that and act accordingly, then it might be best to move on to other investments or another career.

First good piece of news we’ve heard lately. At least our miserly ways helped us finally. I don’t hold out any hope, but maybe they can trade for Bryant or Arenado.

And for everyone saying signing superstars doesn’t win pennants- no, by itself it doesn’t. But you HAVE to have at least a few on your roster to win a title. Period. We have ZERO star players on our roster. Mike Minor, while a really good pitcher, is not playoff ace material. He’s not a Verlander or Scherzer or Strasburg or Cole. It’s great that we’ve made a few shrewd pickups like Minor, Lynn, and Santana, because you do need those under-the-radar and under appreciated guys to compete. But you need to compliment them with elite talent. Washington had it. Houston had it. The Dodgers, Yankees, and Red Sox over the last 2-3 years? Yep, them too.

You don’t wait until the very season you’re ready to compete to sign superstars. It doesn’t work that way. You can’t say “well, we wouldn’t compete in 2020 anyway, so Rendon doesn’t make sense”. Sign them when they’re available. That’s what you do. That’s how the window to compete starts to open. If you have to take on a Rendon 1 or 2 years before the team is ready for prime time, you do it.

why don’t they sell the team if they’re not going to take this seriously?
people buy sports teams to make money

they just got gifted $500 million by taxpayers to build a new stadium where the crappy seats cost $75 a pop. People will show up because of the air conditioning. They're gonna be rolling in the dough.

We will see if Evan is consistent. A few days back he told me the following:

"The other scenario: The Rangers miss out on every target this winter, decide they can’t compete in 2020 and turn Minor and Lynn into late-winter trade pieces."

Let's see if he says this now.

don't see them going the trade route either. I expect the plan has always been to buy really low value players but keep the fanbase dangling by pretending to be involved in Rendon and others and then troop out the same piss-poor lineup

Hot dog night at LAA will be $15.00 while Rangers offer a $1,00 night. Winners and you didn't know it.
