I don't know about that. I don't think there's much that's more arbitrary than the strike zone in baseball.
And as I already replied, a missed ball or strike call doesn't affect the whole game outcome the way a missed fumble or bad/missed pass interference call does. I stand by it, refs are most powerful in football.

And as also mentioned, robot umpires are coming

the subjective calls in basketball ain't much better...

I mean, can you think of another sport where officails affect an outcome more...?
Yes. Football.

So I guess you three all think football officials affect outcomes less than baseball and basketball ones? Uh, ok.

On this I agree 100%. 1 missed call in football probably has a bigger effect than 1 missed in any other sport.

oh yes, basketball calls are much better. ESPECIALLY given that star calls(or NON calls) are well known...

probably not since I said the following....

"On this I agree 100%. 1 missed call in football probably has a bigger effect than 1 missed in any other sport."

I do think football is a far more difficult sport to referee than baseball.

That's all I'm saying. I'm not arguing balls and strikes aren't a little arbitrary, I'm saying it matters far less to the game outcome.

I posted that before you posted your 100% agreement

And agreed football is harder
Partly because the calls matter more

huh, maybe i was wrong about Kyler Murray...?

Cards are losing and he's taking his lumps, but he's getting his so far...

Yeah and he's led his team on 2 4th quarter comebacks.....a tie and a close L, which is about all you can expect out of that kid....his OL is awful.

I don't think it's harder because calls matter more. It's more difficult because of nature of the sport. In baseball, at most there might be 2 people around the play for the most part that a guy might need to watch. In the NFL there could be half a dozen or more all moving at full speed.

As I think I mentioned, just take a pass to the sideline....one guy has to see if the WR caught the ball...retained control....had both feet in bounds AND the defender did not interfere.

Baseball? Did he catch it or not? Did the guy beat the throw to 1st or not (and you can hear ball hitting glove AND foot hitting base).

yup, nothing quite like a garbage O-line that'll put a major downward slide on a QB's career...

ask Derek Carr's brother...

Agreed on all points. I just said one of the reasons was the increased importance of football officiating

Has an umpire ever missed two dozen strike calls?
Watch the Braves run to a title in 1995.

And I'm sure it happens a lot since. I mean, there are 250 or so pitches per game. You don't think it's crazy to think they might "only" get 90% of them right?
