My big question on this decision is:

Are we using the success of the Women's team to bring more viewers to the Men's team in this instance? Or visa versa?

The only reason that is a question is that the men's game is US vs Mexico... Nobody gives a rat's ass about the Gold Cup.

Was cool that for the Women's semi-final I stopped in at a bar to watch and it was a fun atmosphere with a good amount of fans and such that all seemed very into it. Now we have ESPN picking up the broadcast for the tail end of the NWSL season? Maybe women's soccer has a fighting chance here? Cool!

Every four years the Women’s World Cup brings attention the the plight of the NWSL. I remember four years ago coming off the cup win they tried to capitalize on the cup win with moving people to the pro game. I’m not going to look up stats but I’m sure attendance ticked up very slightly at best the last four years.

I’m also not going to venture to reasons why. Women’s professional sports struggles overall for viewers and attendance. And it’s not the quality ( all the comments about how a 15 yo boys team could beat USA women’s can fuck the fuck off, thank you). It just struggles for so many reasons.

And before I seem on a soap box....I live in Orlando. We have the Orlando Pride. Alex, Marta, Ali Krieger all play here. Ashlynn Harris is in goal. I have been to quite a few Orlando City men’s matches. I have not once made effort to go see the Pride.

It’s not because the quality stinks. It’s not because I think women are just something to look at. It’s none of those things. I just don’t....think about it. Any level of reasoning feels hazy to me....and maybe that’s the greatest threat of all.

I’m glad ESPN picked up games. I will be glad for any positive spin this Cup gives the women’s professional game. Maybe I will get off my aloof ass and get to a game. God knows their hard work and talent deserves it.

But I’ve just become more and more cynical that this every four years Patriotic fest of being one of the best soccer teams in the world will bear any fruit for the professional game.

Sticking up for a team mate is stupid? Particularly, when what the team mate did is the norm in post goal celebrating?

If you're looking stupid, how about scheduling the mens soccer right after the Womens final. That's stupid.
No. Saying that silly tea cup celebration was "next level". It was not "next level" it was ridiculous. As far as scheduling the men's soccer right after the women's, the JV game always comes before the varsity game. What's so strange about that?

Yea, but somehow it got reversed this time. That's what makes it funny.:suds:

Well, here's why I disagree. Women's soccer is second level soccer. Its pretty much a given that our women's team is the best in the world and our men's team is near the bottom but how many of the girls could make the men's team? Zero. That should tell you something.

C'mon now. Wait till our Trannies get there! Yes, the men would totally dominate the women. But, as you noted, apples and oranges. I enjoy each for their own merits. Now, to quote a great American, "Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser..." American men have a long way to go to at this point. But, I'm rooting for them.

Do you have a daughter that plays soccer at any sort of competitive level?

That is not meant as some sort of "zinger", its just the truth and it is where the base is coming from or COULD/SHOULD come from for women's soccer... My daughter has played travel for 4/5 years and played HS Varsity as a freshman and I guess it is the "getting used to" how girls/women play that allows folks like myself (and of course, my daughter) to watch the women and almost PREFER watching them. Sure, it's different, but so are the expectations, as well they should be.

But honestly, what is "missing" from the women's game? The men play faster because.... well...... they ARE faster. Okay, they jump higher, but at the end of the day that means they can go up a foot higher to head a higher ball? Okay. Doesn't mean the women don't head the balls that are served at a height they can reach. Is it REALLY so much more "spectacular" for a goal to be headed in from someone jumping 36" in the air as opposed to 42"? Meh. I don't care really.

At the end of the day, the women try as hard and compete with one another as hard and hey.... they flop less (but admittedly they seem to be flopping a bit more of late). I'll go watch either, honestly. I'm just really becoming a fan of the game and I can thank my daughter for that. I played, but never cared to watch, but now? Yeah, I can honestly say I'm a soccer fan.

And the players in the Alabama-Clemson JV game try just as hard as the guys on the varsity do but do you want to watch them?

Oh, c'mon now. The quality is there with the top echelon women teams. Sure it may not have the same speed or power but that does not speak to the quality of their skills.

My oldest daughter played rec league for a few years. I coached. She started with soccer because that was my sport growing up. So my love was already there. As competitive goes her game was softball.

So, I’ve loved soccer all my life. Having daughters certainly helped my view of the women’s game. Strictly due to genetics there’s a reason there are women’s and men’s teams and not a mix. It’s just science and fact.

Yeah, the men can jump higher and run faster. But these games are relative. Maybe if out men’s team was one of the best in the world and the women’s not so much it would be a different view to me. But I love soccer, I love my country, and I love a winner.

I have not watched a moment of the Gold Cup. It’s not a statement. It’s prioritizing with a busy life. As tomorrow goes I will be making the women’s final the priority. I really want to see that the men won the cup. A gold cup final against Mexico is the shit! But I won’t be investing the time into it.

If you want to call it undercard/main event (it’s not) than I will be watching the undercard.

YouTube is in line with me and popped up a top women’s World Cup moments video last night. I ended up down a rabbit hole of watching Carli Lloyd’s hat trick in 15. Ah.....such good times!

Also, I forgot how sweet Lauren Holliday’s strike was in that final too. Had me wondering what happened to her. Memory tells me she was getting up in years by 15.....but that would be me trusting my memory lol

Top top top is still Rapinoe to Wambach in stoppage time vs Brazil.... Honestly one of the greatest soccer moments in history, men OR women IMO...

Ah yes....that was number two on the top Women’s World Cup moments (first being Chastain....because...duh).

I still remember that moment. Sitting back dejected on my couch thinking (fucking Marta and Brazil). Feeling like they had stolen one away from us. The service from Rapinoe was all time great. And you know Abby was getting her head on it.

Only to ultimately have Japan come back on us in extra time and then stick the landing on PKs. I remember actually being somewhat ok that Japan had won in the moment. I would not have felt the same with a Brazil win.

I don't dispute that but I think you said I should watch them because they play hard. I'm sure the people in the Special Olympics try hard too but I ain't watching that.

Na, don't believe I said the women in particular play hard, like you said the Special Olympic athletes and even the Mens National Team try hard. We all have choices in what we want to watch. I really admire the US Womans National Team for being the best in the World (in general, that's why we play the games). I'll be rooting for them and watching them tomorrow.

Giving them a pity attendance bump doesn’t mean anything. It’s men’s sports played under water. Physically they’re not as gifted and most casual sports fans see the difference. And like most women sports, there’s hardly any parody. Upsets are very rare and the talent pool isn’t deep. And yes, the boys U-15 club would beat these ladies.
