+6000 this

I didn't think VAR had enough evidence to overturn this and call it a penalty. None of the angles showed clear contact. However, there are two points I can think of :

1) Would Smith have totally missed that ball if she wasn't fouled? That first goal was a brilliant re-direct. Hard to believe she would whiff on this one knowing it was a tying goal.

2) When the ref handed Sauerbrun the yellow card, she did not complain at all

Were there any post-game comments from either player?

It's still the refs decision when it comes to VAR but there wasnt enough evidence to overturn it one way or another. If it was called a penalty I dont think it could have been overturned (it was but still). However, we fans don't get to see exactly what the officials do I don't think so there could have been an angle but I doubt it.

But like you said, no complaint about the card from her so she knew she did something. Fortunately it didn't matter in the end.

I didnt watch post game so I'm not sure

I’ve decided I’m not worrying about it. It’s not like a Major pro sport where injury reports have to be made. If it had been some behavioral issue that I’m sure many haters would love to see (it wasn’t) and they wanted to hide that they would have jumped on injury claim right away.

I think she tweaked her hammy. I think they decided they are confidant enough in Press to make the switch and not push the hammy. I think they kept it quiet for a while because they wanted that doubt with England. Gamesmanship. I think Ellis was honest on that.

Any other conspiracy idea just doesn’t add up for it.

And....we are on to Sweden/Netherlands. Lol

Yeah she probably did, she's been running around a lot and she needs to be healthy. I'm sure if they truly needed her at some point she'd been in

Honestly don't know... Who do we rather want to face?

My gripe with VAR is with nuanced calls that have grey areas. Like the PK against Sauerbrunn. I feel this is where there needs to be a dictate on whether there is solid evidence to overturn the call on the field. In my view it actually looked like a Penalty in real time, and it wasn’t called. On replay you can see Sauerbrunn making every effort to avoid contact with White (the contact with White was initiated by White, yes, in the process of shooting). But there is where it’s grey. Sauerbrunn is clearly seen making every effort to avoid contact. To me that should make clear evidence to uphold the call on the field.

It’s those in the box plays, or even level of fouls anywhere on the field that should have a call made, then it can be reviewed to see if there is incontrovertible evidence to overturn the call.

And that’s what I have gripe with on VAR....the plays with grey areas.

So apparent "effort to avoid contact" matters ? To be clear, I'm not disputing you. I'm not a big fan nor do I know all of the rules. But while it didn't look like much to me in real time or a couple of the replay angles, the replay from behind seemed pretty damning. She was late getting there and took out White's right leg as she was striking with it.

I really don't know the fine points of what is or isn't a foul.. and offsides ? fuggetaboutit. But all's well that ends well, because White was going to bury it.

Yeah "intent" matters. Look at all the cards when a player slides in spikes up but doesn't even make contact or even come close to making contact with a player.... That play just looked worse than it was and it worked out in England's favor (until the PK attempt that is)

I Zapruder’d the fuck out of the replays from all angles

The way I saw it...Sauerbrunn doesn’t come in contact with her kicking leg at all until she is through the ball (her knee to whites thigh).

What started all of it is that in the effort to avoid and get around Sauerbrunn did put her forearm into the small of Whites back. Yes, that was contact. But it’s just a touch. I don’t see how that would take Whites shot off. At that slight touch White flops like a fish. She misses the kick totally as she is dramatically acting up the contact.

For what? If she commits to that shot Sauerbrunn likely doesn’t end up impeding her and the games tied. Instead she flops like a moron to get a PK that...imo....doesn’t stand any greater a chance of getting in.

Whites flop instead of killer instinct there cost them the match more than anything.

Oh....extra time. This is a wonderful thing. A day less rest than us and more minutes on legs.

Have to enjoy any possible advantage.

The bottom line is that the US has to stay focus regardless. Agree, it's a huge advantage for us, but it could also backfire coming in overconfident.

Might have too much time off if you're the US.. You had the momentum, last played Tuesday won't play again until Sunday.... Sometimes rest isn't a good thing

I can't find it online, so I'm going by memory. I recorded it so I'll look at it again later. They had I think 3 replay angles, but it was only the one from behind that really showed the extent of the contact.

White started to kick and Sauerbrunn kicked her leg, diverting it, just as it was about to contact the ball. Maybe White didn't need to go down. But there was no way she was going to kick that ball.

Scored when it mattered... Let's see if they can hold the Swede's off

Yeah, but they really squandered a ton of opportunities. Unpolished.

Yeah not polished at all.. Especially on that last play where she should have just taken it to the corner and this game would have been over but she tried to shot and score

The shot from goal line corner....looking in from the left (as the Goalie stands). Sauerbrunns forearms into Whites back. That’s all I saw. Didn’t strike her kicking leg until it had flailed missing the ball.

It flailed missing the ball because Meryl Streep was selling the forearm in the back. By the letter of the law that’s a foul in the box (the forearm) because she touched the player. I’m not debating the call. The call is the call.

I’m just saying I don’t see her leg impeded and if she stuck with the attack and not the drama sell she likely ties the game and changes the whole thing up. Contact or not the flopping was stupid.
