Beat reporter for the Washington Post says VT is hiring Ryan Odom from UMBC

There's belief we're going to announce the hire at 6pm, the tipoff the the UVA game

That is an unbelievably lame and childish troll attempt. :L @jeffro151 and @UVA_Guy81 , you guys can load up any jokes you want on that one. It's well deserved. Whit is a fucking moron if he does that

Yeah pretty stupid announcement time.

But I really don't think that's too bad of a hire for a program like VT. Odom could be up and coming. There weren't many other realistic options out there that would be definitely better.

I agree it isn't too bad.

It seems the mid/lower tier schools in the Power 5 leagues that are flush with the football cash usually have these options since they aren't "name" basketball schools like Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, UCLA, UNC, etal.
  1. Bring out the Brinks truck and lure an already successful P5 coach.
  2. Get a smaller Brinks truck and lure an already successful non P5 coach.
  3. Hire a P5 assistant that is considered an "up and comer".
  4. Hire an up and coming non P5 coach that cut his teeth on smaller jobs after spending time at a P5 as an assistant.

Exactly. That's typically how it goes. And VT isn't a school typically known to bring out the brinks truck and lure major coaching talent, they got a dream situation with Buzz.

Although, now it's also being reported that Odom is staying put. So who knows what's going on.

Yeah it may have been why he left VT but it's not why he left Marquette. You are going to have to go full blue blood to find a better revenue. Marquette has some of the best resources in the country with a massive budget.
Buzz was always going to a Texas school. He left Marquette early because of two reasons
1. Massive disagreements with administration
2. He didn't think the new BE would last

You're essentially saying the same thing I am - he got in disagreements with administration (found on how he wants bball programs to be run, read: with more funding), and part of the reason he knew the BE wouldn't last was because of football and football-focused realignments.

And as far as 'going full blue blood to find better revenue' A&M is #2 in athletic revenue with almost $212MM in athletic revenue. He knows what he's doing.

All water under the bridge now. Buzz will do Buzz. Who knows whats going on in his head

I'm not sure this Odom thing was ever confirmed with anyone at VT. I would be lukewarm on that hire also, but agree any attempted troll attempt at UVA before they tip in the final four would have just shown how smalltime our athletic program is.

It would be almost impossible for me to believe Odom, having worked 7 years at VT, would turn down the head coach job there, when VT could easily offer 3x what he's currently making and not make a scratch into what we were considering to re-up Buzz. I'd hope we could get someone a bit more established.

Bobby Hurley is the new flavor of the night on the VT coaching front runner turning door

I don't trust any of these sources anymore though for real. Whit seems to be keeping mum about this shit on VT's side of things which is making people jump to conclusions all over the place when agent's float feelers.

Idk much about Hurley..... what kind of hire would that be for VT?

I think it would be a great hire. The first hire in VT history where we’d actually be getting a guy who values recruiting.

I’m surprised Musselman hasn’t gotten more interest in the open coaching jobs. Haven’t really heard his name much as I expected

Source: Wofford's Mike Young has emerged as a leading candidate to be the next coach at Virginia Tech.

Nobody knows shit anymore. Even the very few people that have in the past had reliable info are basically :noidea: at this point. I'll just wait to the press conference at this point.

Will he stay or will he go?

If a person can handle living in West Texas, I pesonally think Tech is a better job than Arkansas or UCLA. jmo

I agree with you on the Arkansas job. However I still think UCLA is a better gig. The tradition they have, where they are located, the booster influence. I just think UCLA is still a destination job no matter how crappy they’ve been since Howland left.

Tech has definitely been better lately obviously but Arkansas has much better tradition if that even means anything anymore. Facilities and fan support are great as well. Our BOT was probably going to offer Beard $6 million if he didn’t make it this far.

Pretty happy with Musselman though, there may not be enough Red Bull in Fayetteville for he and Chad Morris.

Fair points indeed. Arkansas certainly has the tradition and fan support. My apologies on not including them in my argument.

Musselman is a nice get and has some momentum as a coach. He very well could have landed in the final 4 last year and he got Nevada to the dance 3 times (twice as a at large) in the 4 years he was there. Good get.

He's from Radford. A very underwhelming hire, IMO. Wofford has been good over the past 5 years though. I still believe VT could land a bigger fish.

I think he's a really good coach. I'd be concerned about recruiting a little since he's been at Wofford forever, but I think he could pull in players since they just came off this run. I think it's a good hire. Outside of Buzz going to VT, it's never been a job to pull in a big fish so to speak. They are pretty much a school that can hire a high major assistant or a mid major HC IMO. He's a really good one out there.

Beard is interesting though. No question UCLA is a better job than TT. But Beard is a Texas guy and spent 10 years at Tech as an assistant. Honestly think this might be his dream job. And if you can get to a title game at Tech, you might as well stay there. Sure it's a hard job, but dude is awesome. If Tech was smart they'd double his salary right now, which would put it at almost 6.5 million. If UCLA wants to hire a home run, they need to offer 10 plus million a year.
