Believe I read somewhere could be mlb trade rumors that the rays are also adding in low end prospect

Update: teams are also swapping minor league prospects. Rays receiving a pitcher and M’s an outfielder

Appears to be low level prospect for the M’s

I read that I just don’t understand because swapping low level prospects not getting a legit prospect so it is just a doesn’t move the needle move for me I guess. Unless this is insurance for a Haniger deal, to me, this is just rotating chairs not going all in or going all out.

Smith is younger and cheaper, but in a way it is more expensive because they have to go find a FA catcher now. I don’t hate the deal just doesn’t really make sense or give clarity on the earlier reports of them rebuilding. Smith is a starter for the M’s so they are essentially in the same spot as last year.

If, and that is a huge if, you use free agency, then you add a serviceable catcher and this deal is a win. I am sure M's are looking to deal Gordon for a catcher somewhere. My guess, and it is a pure guess, is they deal Gordon with Paxton and a catcher is involved in the deal. Not a stud or proven catcher, but a serviceable, young catcher.

I don’t question the deal is a win as Smith is the better player. Just as a frustrated fan I’m expecting more, either get numerous prospects back. But I’m coming from thinking the report is real where they are going to try to build the farm system. Just to me this seems like they might be trying to go for it again. You can’t get better at the big league level and expect me to believe you are trying to rebuild the farm system just because the dude is under team control.

But on a plus note, this does open up Lewis as part of package with say Paxton to collect legit top prospects back.

I truly hope this is the year they decide to blow things up. The division is a lock between the Astros, A’s and possibly the Angels for the next several years.

Jerry isn’t a farm guy but he need to start. Just need to focus on rebuilding and become competitive by the time the untradable contracts expire.

I dont expect legit prospects from the likes of Heredia and Zunino. Adding Smith back in doesn’t hurt as Dee Gordon sucked in 2018 he was less than half a player he was in Miami

If you listened to the podcast I posted, you will hear a professional with ties to M's and Dipoto say that Dipoto is not a guy that is a prospect collector. He is an add on GM to established teams. I believe him because I have witnessed it for three years now and saw the same with his time in Anaheim. We never seem to be aligned with a GM's strength and the franchises needs.

No question and like I said we were warned about Dipoto by Angels people, but most people in Seattle chalked it up to Scossia being suck a dickhead and the old and new school clashed. I just don’t get the moves because as a typical Mariners fan I got semi excited that they were going to finally try to build a real organization even though it’s 14 years late on it. I hate being in limbo and this move, to me, is just another limbo move......but this is the initial reaction so I’m sure there will be more moves.

I’m not trying to say Zunino would fetch a top prospect but Tampa needs him so he should have been able to fetch a fringe guy who might hit not get a guy who will never wear a Mariners uniform (speaking from needing prospects) Maybe Smith can be another Cliff Lee, I don’t know I’m just not stoked about upgrading our OF but leaving only free agency as a route to get another catcher. It’s just a confusing trade to me that the front office isn’t signaling what was reported yesterday.

To be fair, the off-season just started and the winter meeting is around the corner. We tend to learn a lot about the direction of the club after the winter meeting.

Overall: Haniger, Diaz, Paxton, and Segura are the guys rhat have most values right now and can bring in decent prospects. One or two of these guys package together with a vet like Gordon could be valuable.

Gonzales and Pazos are also of some values.

All fair points, but Zunino and Heredia, to me, are dudes who are pieces of package to get the top guys. Segura has value, but adding in a gold glove caliber catcher or a 4th OF with him would offset the contract whatever team would be taking on.

Hey, check out my response above. It kinda ties into this one. I think we’ll get a better understanding after the winter meeting.

Multiple Major League Baseball sources said the Mariners are finalizing a deal with their favorite trade partner, the Tampa Bay Rays. Seattle would send Zunino and outfielder Guillermo Heredia and minor league left-handed pitcher Michael Plassmeyer to Tampa in exchange for outfielder Mallex Smith and minor league outfielder Jake Fraley.

Fraley is #40 in Rays top 50 prospect. 77th pick overall. Just a low-mid level prospect.

Look like he was highly regarded in 2016. Probably not a bad pickup

On the other hand, the teal-and-blue did manage to squeeze an extra prospect out of Tampa in outfielder Jake Fraley. The second-round pick from 2016 is a plus-plus defender in CF, ranked as the best outfield defender in the Rays’ system last year by Baseball America. Here’s a piece from our friends over at DRaysBay after he tore the cover off the ball in the Australian Baseball League, which will probably put a smile on your face.

After injuries robbed him of most of his 2017 season, Fraley raked in A+ ball in 2018, slashing .347/.415/.547 in 66 games. He’ll be 24 next season, so you’d hope to see him start off well in AA and perhaps even split his time between Arkansas and Tacoma in 2019.

I hope this now move the needle a little bit.

I mean he’s TB best investment so far in terms of dealing with the M’s. Smyly didn’t throw a single pitch for the M’s and now Zunino is gone to bring Mallex back.

Dip is gonna try to bring back all the guys he traded previously but only to realize costly old again veteran players are not as intriguing as the farm he blew up.

Very M’s like.
So what you are saying is that we should expect to see Chris Giminez and Rene' Rivera when pitchers and catchers report in February.

Smith is younger and cheaper which are two very important things for M's. Plus, you always want to bring home guys that were a part of your organization and gave their all...

I haven’t looked into much into how he is in the OF. Whatever they are doing rebuilding or not they need a CF. They haven’t had a real one since probably Guti pre injuries
