Perhaps it should be renamed the Hall of Yards.

According to passer rating, he's severely mediocre for his era. According to completion percentage, he's well below average for his era. According to interceptions, he's one of the most guilty of his era.

If that's a HOF QB to you, your standards must be really, really low.

One played in an era where teams predominantly ran the ball and one played in an era where teams predominantly threw the ball. For a good chunk of the 1970s/Plunkett's careeer, the average NFL was averaging around 24-27 pass attempts per game (though it did get above 30 in 1980). During Eli's career, it's been mostly around 33-35 pass attempts per game. Plunkett averaged the same amount of yards per pass attempt.

in 1974 plunkett finished 2nd in the nfl in passing yards...

with 2457. ken anderson led the nfl with 2667. he also tied HOFer joe namath (1 ring!) with 22 picks that year.

think about that. he also played half his career in the old 14 game schedule. elis had 16.

plunkett was a quiet guy. his numbers hold up IMO and the 2 rings cements him.

I think this argument really needs to be put into context. Eli Manning's numbers...whenever they are done, are gonna wipe out legendary HOF QB's. It isn't coincidence that the year Manning was drafted (2004), you also see Ben Roethlisberger, Phillip Rivers and Carson Palmer (didn't play in his rookie year of 2003) all rocket up the all time charts for yards and TD's and whatnot. 2004 is also the year the NFL further cracked down on the 5 yard chuck rule....and the numbers have really exploded since then. They have played their entire careers within the easiest time frame in NFL history to pass the ball.

Just by stats at face value, Andy Dalton's, had he played 30 years ago, would've put him in the HOF. Today, he's everybody's whipping boy. Same thing with Alex Smith....and all he did was get traded....twice....in the prime of his career. Ryan Tannehill would've been a pro bowler. Dak Prescott's last year would've been considered a very good year, and on and on and on......

.....and this is the 80's were talking about....not the 70's which was even more difficult.....where Plunkett started his career.

Manning may be top 10 in those big stats, but off the top of my head, I'd have to question if he'd be in the top 100 QB's of all time. His greatest achievement is the longevity, and there is something to be said about it - 'something' but again....due in part to the era were in. When the only thing you've ever led the NFL in, is ints (3 times), and only once in your entire career did you ever crack the top 10 in passing efficiency (2011), I'm not impressed.
