I'd put all chips in on Machado.....

I’d wait to see how the rest of the season plays out before I’d make any bets.

For their careers, Harper has been much better, plus he’s got a higher ceiling and hasn’t had multiple knee surgeries.

Harper also never pitched a hissy fit about being tagged too hard.

Holy shit. No.

This “down year” that Harper is having is comparable to Machado’s career.

Career slash lines:

BH - .279/.383/.511/.895/ 138 OPS+

MM - .281/.332/.482/.815/ 119 OPS+

Interesting thing about Machado, if you buy into defensive metrics, he is literally the worst SS in all of baseball this season

Wonder how that plays into his desire to only play SS when a team is gonna give him 300 million

As we approach the winter of "500 million for Bryce Harper"

So I have the #4 pick in my big money draft, so I started to look at Goldy/Arenado/Betts/Harper

Correct me if im wrong here

Has Bryce Harper lived up to the hype a grand total of ONE season his entire career, and been otherwise nothing more than "pretty good" ?

Im starting to think this is the most overhyped player (so far) ever
In a sport dominated by Spanish-speaking black Latinos, it will be Harper's race and skin color that have as much impact on his contract value as his statistics. The guy is a marketing powerhouse. He'll get his money. Don't think it will be $500 million, but it will be at least $300 million and it will be much more than Machado gets.

The guy who is really going to break the bank is Mookie Betts when he becomes FA eligible prior to the 2021 season. I'm sure the Red Sox would love to lock him up before he gets to free agency, but his agent would have to be an absolute moron to pass up the opportunity for free agency at what will be age 28.

Yup, pretty much......Sorta like Giselle, wont throw her out of bed, but not near the top in terms of choices.....Everyone would still take Harper
Glad I'm not 'everyone'. I'm not a big Giselle fan but I would rather be in bed with her than Harper. But, hey, I don't really know. Maybe Harper is a really good fuck.

So, wait. A team is going to sign a vastly overrated player to big contract, and the Cubs are not mentioned?!

the only thing is that 74 games isn't the most reliable sample size for defensive metrics. 2 seasons is a much better sample size.

Even if he is as bad as UZR rates him, he's still 16th in the league in WAR just because he's a shortstop with a 150 wRC+.

I don’t even think you need to include pitchers. Measured by WAR, Harper ranks 142 out of 163 qualified batters.

It’s true, he’s no Jose Ramirez or Francisco Lindor, but still, I wouldn’t call him garbage. He’s in a prolonged slump, but he’s the same guy who had that juiced-Bonds-like season a few years ago.

True but pretty pedestrian outside of that season

Btw, the Tribe is a sleeping Giant as everyone slobbers over the Sox Yanks and Stros

I was as big on Harper as anybody at one time, but he has been a frustrating guy to follow.
He was cut a lot of slack on his poor year following his MVP season because of a supposed undisclosed injury, but I really think he's just buckling under the pressure of playing for a huge contract this year. I get the feeling he thinks he is losing a million bucks off his deal every time he strikes out and maybe he is right.
Don't forget, this is a guy who ran full speed into an outfield wall like he forgot that baseball is played in enclosed spaces...maybe he's just a real dumbass?

To me its always been the wildly violent swing. When he hits it good...OMG.

But its so hard to consistently replicate. So much violence and upper cut in it.

Back when they first came up and Trout hit .200 in his little stint he was the one I said looked better to me just because of the swing.

That said, didn't think Harper would be one who would have multiple prolonged slumps of ineptitude. And I definitely didn't think Trout would be a GOAT contender.

who's gonna get more $$ Harper or Machado?

Is this a legit question? A younger player who is essentially the face of baseball with his endorsements is going to get the bigger contract. He is still young enough to beat the shift once he isn't trying to get a $500 million contract. Boras is literally fucking up his game, dude is a cancer to any player's game he represents.

Pocket book=good, game and reputation=terrible.

Harper's streaky season:

1st 33 games - .264/.450/.623 (1.072 OPS)
Next 40 games - .170/.255/.347 (.601 OPS)
Last 45 games - .282/.432/.570 (1.003 OPS)

He's been elite offensively for 2/3 of the season, but that third when he wasn't (early May to mid June) was horrific.
