Update on John (Cy Young) Brebbia:

Grade 2 lat strain. Out two months.

Much as I like to make fun of him, that sucks.
Wow. That totally sucks. Along with Tylor and Doval, he is part of the core of that bully. Hopefully Jackson can come in and act the veteran and take leadership. As ballz as Doval is, he doesn’t strike me as a leader. At least not yet.

What are we going to do without his 1-2 inning starts every three games?

Tristan Beck had a 5.71 ERA in his first eight appearances. He gave up five home runs. Opponents were batting .319 against him. But there was nothing wrong with his strike-throwing rate (66 percent) and his 18-to-4 K/BB ratio.

In his seven appearances since May 24, Beck has a 0.49 ERA over 18 1/3 innings, a .154 opponent’s average (also a .154 slugging percentage, which makes for easy math when you don’t allow an extra-base hit), while maintaining his excellent strike-throwing rate (67 percent) and K/BB ratio (13 to 3).

In the very early going, Luis Matos has posted a 20.9% O-Swing%, which is a pretty encouraging sign for how he is reading major league pitching. For reference, the league average O-Swing% is 28.5%.

I think it is common for rookies to be a little too aggressive at the plate, but we are not seeing that with Matos. He is laying off of pitches outside of the zone, and when he swings, he is generally making contact. Nice mix for a 21-year-old rookie.

I forget that this guy is only 21 years old. That alone bodes well for him. If he can do this at 21 (even with the inevitable slump this year), imagine what he could do at 26 and 27 years of age. Yes, I know that not every player that starts his MLB career at a young guy do well but it is a good sign that he could possibly get even better.
