Infante is batting .279 with 74 homers and 421 RBIs over his 12-year career. He's never played more than 149 games in a season, and missed more than a month last year with an ankle injury that occurred when the Blue Jays' Colby Rasmus slid aggressively into his leg.

oh great...what average 6 hr a year and the definition of injury prone...I think we will see Boni enough to know who is better for the money.

And yet, he is still more valuable a player than E.Boni. It is still a substantial upgrade over both Getz, Bonifacio, or AAA bat available.

Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN 20h Future question about the Royals is: Will Ervin Santana be eventually forced by draft-pick circumstances to try to work out something w/ KC?

I highly doubt it gets to that point. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Santana is the Lohse of this offseason.

Another topic that needs to be visited is if we should trade a reliever to alleviate some space in the payroll to go after Santana. All academic, and highly questionable I know, but it is good fun to ponder.

Where did you get the 2.2 from? I see 2.1 for Steamer and 2.6 for Oliver. Also, Oliver has a 5 year projection (we will use the first 4 for our purposes).

2014: 2.6 WAR
2015: 2.2
2016: 2.0
2017: 1.6

Total: 8.2

Estimated value based on 1 War= ~5.75M

46 Million for four years. (11.5 AAV)

Actual AAV: 7.563 before incentives

Essentially, based on Oliver atleast, we paid for a player well below market value in my opinion. We filled a hole our farm does not, nor our incumbent Emilio Bonifacio. Additionally, both these players can serve as utility guys. Say Moose shits himself completely, Infante could move to 3rd while Boni takes 2nd. It works out nicely imo. Not happy about the 4th year, but pleasantly surprised about how low the AAV actually is.

5th year club option on Infante. I doubt it gets to that point, but just an interesting quirk to that deal.

Is that if he actually gets 3 yrs of games played in those 4 years...lol...then the 5th, errrr 4th year kicks in.

Another really good move, Lough for Valencia...really like having a back up option at 3b going into the season.

so thats starting to look like

Aoki
Infante
Hosmer
Butler
Gordon
Perez
Moose
Cain
Escobar

bench

Boni 2b/ss/of
Valencia 3b
Dyson OF
Maxwell OF
Pena C

Shields
Vargas
Guthrie
Duffy
Ventura

Holland
Hoch
Coleman
Collins
Crow
Herrera

25 men right there, could be the 2014 Royals.

I would trade Davis (who you have left off right now) and one of Hoch or Holland for salary relief and try to use that for Ervin Santana even though his numbers scare me to death. Trading Davis and Hoch would save about 10 million and give us some room to shore up the rotation which is a bit scary given we are starting guys who have never played a full season. However, if Dayton or Yost saw this, they would accuse me of being an idiot for putting a "gamer" in the pen like Guthrie.

I would probably call up Joseph and put Guthrie in the pen (Ha! I wish)

My hypothetical 25

Rotation

Shields
Santana (yes, Ervin)
Vargas
Duffy
Ventura

Pen:

Holland
Crow
Herrera
Collins
Joseph
Guthrie

Bench:

Velencia (Inf that strictly hits LHP)
Maxwell (OF that strictly hits LHP)
Dyson ( CF that is a speedster on the bases, but can only hit RHP)
Bonifacio- Utility player that can play seemingly every position
Hayes
Lineup seems pretty obvious (atleast by Yostian standards with LRLRLRLR...)

Could nitpick about Joseph, but I like him much better going forward over Coleman; and I think Moose's splits merit Velencia a spot on the 25 man.

they didn't pay Guthrie 8 mil a year to be a reliever...they were paying Hoch less and still threw him ever 5th day for years while sucking...no way Guthrie will see a bullpen with the Royals.

Even though he should be a #5 or a swingman like Chen, he will be our #3 ... sigh.

still can't believe KRod is available....fine, trade Holland and sign KRod...he will probably be just as cheap or cheaper.

Signing Johan Santana, Kyle McPherson or Roy Oswalt for 1 year could be a steal also.
