The big question is, would Stanford ever fire Shaw if this downturn continues? They've never made sports a focus to begin with across the institution and it reflects with their fans. It's the least imposing place to travel to in the conference.

What would it take for them to fire him?

They fired the two HC's between Willingham and Harbaugh, but both had miserable records. Shaw still holds the highest winning percentage since Pop Warner and it would take quite a few losing seasons to get down to a point where he's even at .500.

My guess is, if they have another season like this one, he'll be gone. He will probably head to the pros in an amicable split. Stanford still has enough recent success to snag a solid replacement.

I honestly think it would take more than one. He's had enough history and success to not have a quick trigger. I would bet it's at least 2 years before that would heat up.

LOL oh really? Because otherwise kids would just be flocking to go play for a just decent head coach? Fact is, Stanford is a nice program but hardly elite. Yeah, top 20 is solid. That puts your class in the top 15% of all FBS teams. Stanford has Harbaugh to thank for that. Again, there is nothing at all that suggests Stanford's academic standards are costing them all these big-time recruits, and clearly they've pulled in a solid amount of 4/5* kids in recent years. For a program that was a constant doormat just a decade ago, that's definitely solid.

Correction, Stanford can thank Oliver Luck not Harbaugh. Had Luck not talked his son into going to Stanford.

Since Stanford is private none of us know what his buyout is either. Stanford has one alumnus who even cares about sports and she isn’t paying the buyout.

That's because he's not a very good coach. I've said it on here for years, and been ripped into repeatedly. The further they get from the Harbaugh years, the worse things have gotten. He had some great years with Harbaugh's kids, and since they've been trending down - in his first 5 seasons, Shaw averaged 10.8 wins a season. For the past 4 seasons, he's sitting at 7.8 wins a season, including 4 this season.

could make a case for 2015 Stanford and 2016 Washington (they just ran into one of the greatest Alabama teams of all-time) IMO.

pac-12 was 2nd among NCAA conferences in SRS from 2014-2016 and 1st in 2013. it was 5th in 2017 and 2018 and 4th in 2019. it was a pretty deep conference for a few years (Oregon, Stanford, Arizona State, USC, UCLA, Washington, Utah, Arizona).

Shaw is probably on his way out come January when NFL jobs open and he obviously made his players aware of the fact and probably Stanford as well. Stanford probably said they are not promoting within, hence why all the players are leaving.

Except it doesn't, because they routinely are getting top 20 classes. For a football program with no national titles in recent memory and minimal success, that's incredible.
