They had 11 players enter the transfer portal this month. That seems abnormally high, especially for a program that struggles to get to 85 scholarships due to their recruiting limitations.

Can any of them catch a football when it hits them in the chest?

I haven't had much respect for that program since Shaw took over. I can’t get out of my head in overtime, you have the number 1 player in the draft in Andrew Luck on the field, and you are running wildcat formation. I’m no football expert, but that showed me a lot about Shaw.

Yeah...sometimes when you don't strike when the iron is hot you forever lose that opportunity. At one time Shaw could've had multiple NFL jobs.

Now with the program down lately, maybe one would still hire him but imo his star didn't shine for long.

That's because he's not a very good coach. I've said it on here for years, and been ripped into repeatedly. The further they get from the Harbaugh years, the worse things have gotten. He had some great years with Harbaugh's kids, and since they've been trending down - in his first 5 seasons, Shaw averaged 10.8 wins a season. For the past 4 seasons, he's sitting at 7.8 wins a season, including 4 this season.

The "recruiting restrictions" narrative is so inaccurate. Outside of 2018 when they only had 15 spots available and finished with the 40th best recruiting class, they've had a top 20 nationally ranked recruiting class since 2015. The talent has been there, the coaching just hasn't.

I'm probably going to get ripped for this. But I think that program has been on a slow, but steady, decline since Harbaugh left. Shaw was able to reap the rewards of what Harbaugh built in the first few years he took over but since 2015, it's been a pretty steep downhill slide. His first 3 years were his best (minus his one 12 win season in 2015) and all of those were with Harbaugh recruits and a lot of the Harbaugh staff still in place.

That's exactly what I said in the post right before yours.

Disagree. Their academic restrictions are even more stringent than ND’s. I have to check but I’m not sure they even allow early enrollees.
True they’ve had some decent classes but that’s the ceiling for them.

And Shaw’s been a steady, if not great coach for them. I think losing their S&C coach hurt them a lot. They were notorious for being virtually injury free for a very long time. It’s no coincidence he was let go and bodies started dropping this year.

I went through this before on here in a different thread last year. They routinely have offers out to dozens of 4/5* kids. For the 2020 class, they have offers to four 5* and 34 4* prospects, and that's down from normal. They usually have offers extended to 40-50 guys that rank 4* or higher. By contrast, Ohio State had 51 offers to guys rated 4* or higher for the 2020 class.

In Harbaugh's final class in 2010, he had 17 offers out to guys rated 4* or higher. Shaw is essentially doing less with much more than Harbaugh regularly did. Not only that, but the Pac12 has been down in the past few years and Stanford is getting worse. Harbaugh built Stanford up to a national power and Shaw has slowly let it slip back down again.

Killed by injuries this year. They've never been a program with a ton of depth. This year it caught up to them. Not good if he's lost the locker room though. It may be time for him to take another gig.

Offers do not mean that they actually get the kid.

They can offer all of the 4 and 5 star kids they want. But the kid then has to choose Stanford and pass their entrance qualifications.

From what I understand, their admissions standards are lower for athletes than for regular Stanford students, but still much tougher than what pretty much every other school has for their athletes.

Basically, it sounds like they just offer all of the 4's and 5's that they can and hope that enough are willing to come and can pass the admissions standards to put together a good recruiting class.

End result seems to be that some years it works out in their favor and some years it doesn't. Even in the good recruiting years though, it doesn't seem like they can get enough to have the depth of a lot of teams.

Stanford's recruiting disadvantage is also its advantage. No school has beaten UW out of as many recruits as has Stanford seeing how a Stanford degree is worth a fvckload of money and those kids know it. Usually when Stanford and UW go head to head on a recruit Stanford wins.
