agreed. the only scary part is, and what will probably drive the return down some from typical TD sales, is the fact that those guys all have years left on their contract. but as long as they get something in return, and don't have to sweeten the pot, I think moving those guys will be good.

my hope for returns would be:

Coburn - 2nd round pick + late round pick
Macdonald - 3rd round pick
LSchenn - 4th round pick

That might be undervaluing or overvaluing those guys, unfortunately this isn't my job :). but I think I would be satisfied with returns along those lines. Moving those contracts out and adding picks would be fantastic.

I am doing this from memory due to capgeek closing. As far as I am concerned all 3 of these guys are 3rd pairing depth guys. A Mac will be a Flyer for at least 4 more seasons. Maybe in the last year of his contract he can be moved. The only other way would be for some teams GM being severely addicted to crack.

Coburn - 1 year $4.5. He would be a great depth guy for a really good team but you do have to deal with that large hit for next season for a 3rd pairing/depth guy. I would take a 3rd round pick to free up $4.5 next year.

A Mac - 5 years $5.0 per year. May as well be 100 years for $1,000,000,000. Even a team that is 1 #7 dman from the cup will shy from this deal as they would be totally fucked for the next 5 years. Any GM that would trade for him would be committed to drug/alcohol rehab the following day. This contract is so bad we should seriously consider the negative implications of a buy out this off season.

L. Schenn - 2 years $3.6. This could happen because he is only $3.6, a right handed shot and can be a physical, stay at home defender. If we did not have 4-5 other 3rd pairing guys already on the team, I would not want to move him.

We have 1 open spot for a young guy next year. Getting rid of any of these 3 would open 2 spots and allow us to bring by Schultz at an affordable cap hit. Moving any of these 3 would save from 2.4-3.8 per year even after the young guys cap hit is included.

I'd be very happy if the Flyers were able to move Vinny and a d-man for picks.

Cmon Hexy pull some magic and unload some of these contracts so we can watch the young defenseman play with the big club next year.

The obvious contracts to move are Coburn, MacDonald, LSchenn, and Vinny. However Hextall does it and gets some decent return will make my spring and summer. Grossmann left yesterday's game with a chest injury and is probably a keeper. MDZ, Rinaldo, and Bellamare are in the hunt if their contracts permit movement.

MDZ and Bellemare are 1 year deals, so they're probably gone at the end of the season anyway. Would be nice if they can move them at the deadline for something though.

If things continue to look better without Rinaldo, as we all expect them to, I think Rinaldo will be on the phantoms next year.

As I was thinking awaz, if some of these players could be packaged to even just get draft picks, the movement of those constricting contracts would help us in the long-term like finally getting rid of Vinny's contract.

Vermette a trade option | INSIDER TRADING | Hockey | Sports | Ottawa Sun

Flyers GM Ron Hextall is getting antsy to make deals. Philly has virtually no shot at making the playoffs, coach Craig Berube is on the hot-seat and Hextall wouldn't mind clearing out cash. While the Flyers would like to move blue-liners Nick Schultz, Carlo Colaiacovo and Michael Del Zotto, the guy teams really covet is Braydon Coburn. With a $4.5-million cap hit through 2016-17, Coburn is highly regarded and could bring a good return. There's also interest in centre Brayden Schenn, who has a cap hit of $2.75 million through next season

Very good. I don't think there was any doubt that teams would want Coburn, but the fact that he is coveted is really nice.

I will believe it when I see it. Don't see how any team could COVET a 3rd pairing player making $4.5. He is the poster boy for inconsistent. Addition by subtraction as this could open 2 spots, Morin and Ghost, for next year and save more than $3.0 after adding his replacement.

Moving Schultz at this point could get a decent pick but at this point we should b trying to resign him for next year. He may be our best dman at this point and will still be cheap.

I don't think the focus should be on next year, JMO. The goal should be to add assets to build for future years. Nick Schultz, on a good NHL team, is at best a 5th dman. Those are the kinds of roles you fill last, when you have a solid top 4 and a good top 6 forward core. If you can turn Schultz in to a potential top 4 or top 6 guy (ie 3rd round pick), I think you have to do it.

Especially when you take in to account the flexibility it provides for the younger guys to get NHL minutes. I do worry about overdoing that though. Just because we're excited for Ghost, Morin, Sanheim, and Hagg, doesn't mean they should play in the NHL next year. Hopefully Hextall, Berube, and Murray make the right moves there, they're the only ones who can. (Berube - or whoever replaces him)

I am excited and want to see the kids play in the NHL. Its not like the old days where a kid could get ruined by coming up too early. The league has gotten younger and mistakes happen in the NHL or the minors. The key is to learn from a mistake and not let it keep happening. I think at the very least Morin and Ghost are ready to play for the big club starting next season.

Schultz is the kind of guy you need for that 6-7 spot. Can sit, come in and play. Will be cheap. He fills a role that you don't want young guy to fill. We already have 5 dmen under contract for next year.

Streit - $5.6
A Mac - $5.0
Coburn - $4.5
Grossmann - $3.6
L. Schenn - $3.5.

Morin will make the team next year and as such has to be a top 6. I think Schultz is a better option than 4 of the 5 and can also be the veteran #7. Striet will not be moved and I would argue that its impossible to move A Mac. Grossmann should stay. If Coburn or L. Schenn moves we have cap and a spot for Schultz or a young guy.

I agree 100% Schultz fills that role perfectly. I just think if you can move him for something that could turn in to something better than that, you do it. And the way Schultz is playing, his contract situation, and the demand for reliable dmen at the trade deadline, puts the Flyers in a position to do that. There's a good chance the draft pick they get for Schultz turns out to be a better player than Schultz. Since the Flyers have time to wait for the pick to pan out, they should do it IMO. If/when his contract comes up in the summer, I'd be fine trying to sign him then. But right now it's all about getting value where you can. It's a relativey low risk, relatively high reward situation to me.

5/6/7 dmen kind of grow on trees. I'm not worried about the Flyers filling that role down the road when they're ready to compete. Top 6 forwards and top 4 dmen I am worried about.

I agree on all points - he's a perfect guy to fill that role but the way he's playing now, is when you can get the absolute most for him

And they can always re-sign him in the summer, he, being a veteran, understands that and it helps the team in both ways

Teams get dumb at the deadline. Kyle Quincey fetched a 1st and Douglas Murray got two 2nds. I've soured on Coburn but when he is on top of his game he'd be very desirable for a Cup run. I agree with the addition by subtraction, though. I don't even care about making room for the kids. I just want to sell off excess for picks

the flexibility is just as beneficial to the Flyers as the picks IMO. they need to move salary as best they can so they can make moves that help the team. until a lot of that salary is gone, all they can do is sell. even if they were one piece away this year, they don't have the room to make a 'buy' type trade.

I think the plan of awaz and Cobie are legit. Hold steady until next year's trading deadline. We need all the help we can muster.
