We're 19-9-7 on home ice this season. The boost of finishing 2nd in the Metro would be enormous, no matter who we face. I think it is a definite possibility, but we have to beat the Pens and Isles. It's something we're more than capable of. We ripped the Islanders 4-0 the last time we played them and we have virtually owned the Pens over the last few years, especially in their building.

OK, I have a trade question......

In 2014, what was the reasoning for the Hartnell/Umberger trade???
I have read several articles, have seen the many many posts wanting Umberger out of town....To which I have to agree. But in every aspect of this, I still can't wrap my head around this.... I mean Umberger is as worthless as tits on a boar hog.

It all came down to one less year on Umberger's contract as opposed to Hartnell. Both players were regressing. Umberger has one year left and will likely be bought out this summer.

which for the most part I can understand, but Umberger's regression goes from very little to absolutely nothing.

Actually, Hartnell has 3 years remaining on his contract after this year, so it's 2 years longer than Umberger's. I didn't like the trade at the time and still don't really, but in fairness Hartnell's play began to drop off noticeably in the 2nd half of the season. Just a dip or signs of aging? We'll see...

There were a couple of factors in the Hartnell for Umberger deal. Umbie's contract was shorter and slightly less money. BUT...the Flyers head coach *Berube* did not like Hartnell in any way, shape or form. He wanted players who play a simple straight ahead two way game. He also didn't like Hartnell's game...in no way. The chance to save a few $$ and make a coach happy was really all it took..that and shake up the locker room. Frankly, it was a bust AND more than likely at least part of the demise of Berube.

Greg Paone makes the most sense there to me. The first instinct is to pick one, extend him, and then trade the other, but then we're throwing Stolarz into a backup role immediately.

Considering we will be expected to make the playoffs again this coming season, we will need both Mase and Neuvy to run the gauntlet at the end of the season. Hopefully they are both healthy at that stage and we can just ride the hot goalie on into the playoffs.

There's a lot of incentive for both of them as this will essentially come down to a battle for the starting job moving forward and the loser is still playing for money elsewhere. I also agree that neither of them will fetch much in a trade, so we need to just ride them both until a starter emerges. That will likely also be the guy we offer an extension to.

I think Neuvy wants this bad and Mase better come to play if he wants to keep his job. High level competition here.

Totally agree you can never have enough goalies why make the position a potential week spot unless Stolarz is ready.

I am not so sure we will be "expected" to make the playoffs. Hexy has said that making the playoffs this year does not change his long term plan for the team. Adding younger players will mean growing pains. Yes, had the team picked up a few points in games they let slip away they wouldn't have needed as insane a push to make the playoffs....but getting there is not a given.

Plus, what would the market really be like for either goalie? If you think the Flyers could get more than a mid-round draft pick for a goalie who's had ups downs and has had issues staying healthy consistently (categories Mason and Neuvirth both fall into), you're out of your mind. Is a mid-round pick really worth it? Nope.

To me, this part is key as well. The trade market for goalies is essentially non-existent. There's absolutely no reason to trade a good goalie for a mid-round pick. The only time I would consider it is at the deadline next year, and the only way they get better value is if a playoff team loses their starter to injury. In that situation, and probably that situation alone, moving a goalie would make sense. You can get higher value from a team in need, you're already 2/3rds of the way through the year so you've gotten quality starts from the goalie you're trading, and both AHL goalies have had more experince so they can come up to backup.

I totally agree as neither one will fetch as much in a trade as they mean to our team.

I also agree that getting to the playoffs is not a given. In the past couple of years teams have made the lower seeds in the playoffs and they thought that they were on the rise only to find themselves back in the lottery the next season.

I say we're expected to make the playoffs suddenly simply because we have a lot of younger players that should grow with another year under their belts and does anyone think that we won't be signing a free agent scorer in the offseason? Also, Provorov (while young), looks like a guy who may come right into the Nhl and compete for the Calder. All of this plus our guys getting healthy and a second year of Hakstol. None of these things should set us back from where we were this season.

I really hope this is true and they all develop into the players we thought.

While I think it is very possible that the Flyers make the playoffs, it is also very possible that they actually improve and don't make the playoffs. Don't forget that the Bruins collapsed and that was a key ingredient in the Flyers making the dance.

It is very possible/likely that the Flyers will be an improved team and not make the playoffs and frankly, if they are better I will be okay if the long term picture is still looking up.

Pittsburgh is too fucking fast. I am shocked that most all of the "experts" picked San Jose to win this series. It's already glaringly obvious that the Sharks are in trouble. And this is depressing...
