I agree. We should be a top three team in our division next season. Settling for a wild card or 9th place in the east will no longer be considered a strong effort. The difficult part may be signing a free agent that is willing to take a short term deal. I don't think we're committing to anyone long term unless they have a lot of years left in their prime and the price is fair.

I don't think the money will be an issue though. We should be able to afford one or two nice additions to the roster, depending on what happens with Umberger/MacDonald. I am fairly confident that Lecavalier will retire.

Another thing to remember, after 7/1, assuming Vinny does retire, the Flyers are no longer on the hook for not only the 50% holdover on his money, but Luke Schenn's and Grossmann's. That means if they choose to move out Streit (for example) they could choose to retain some of his contract to make it more appealing. Streit to the right team for $3 million for one season is a lot more appealing than $5+ million.

I don't get overboard/hung up on chasing names to sign. I want overall organizational depth and cap health long term. Hextall has shown that he too is more interested in building that way.

Time will tell.

Well said. I see Medvedev and Gagne being let go in free agency and Umberger bought out. Otherwise, everyone else probably returns even White as a 13th/14th forward, with at least one rookie forward and one rookie d-man making the team. Probably another veteran depth forward signed. I wouldn't be upset if it goes that way.

Hell, if we clear enough space, we could make a legitimate run at Stamkos. That would be something.

I think i'd be pretty wary of going after Stamkos. I bet he gets at least 9 mil per for at least 7 years. That's a hell of a contract and when you pair it with Giroux at 8+ and Voracek at 8+ you're eating up a lot of your cap with just 3 guys. Come 2-3 years down the road when your ELC's are up youre going to be in a tough spot

I'd much rather go this route than go after Stamkos

For sure, it's just nice to think about at this stage. I do feel we would be in the market though for guys like Eriksson, Okposo, Ladd, Boedker or Lucic etc. We could possibly afford two of them short term.

Remember, if you move Streit and retain money you still have to replace him. You may save $3 million off the cap but I am not so sure you replace him with someone better for the $3 million you saved. Unless we get at least a 1st I would rather keep Streit at $5 mill.

MDZ, Ghost, Gudas, Schultz, Provorov, MacDonald (hasn't been too bad since recall) and Manning or someone of similar cost for 7th d-man? Streit doesn't really bring much to this squad in particular since he has been supplanted on the 1st PP by Ghost and 2nd PP could operate with MDZ and Provorov. I will be pretty bummed if Streit isn't moved after the season.

Streit is still a legit top 4. Would rather see him and A Mac fill a 6/7 roll. If Streit gets us a 1st, I am happy to see him go.

This is true. Streit wouldn't necessarily need to be replaced with the emergence of Ghost, the return of a healthy MDZ and the graduation of Provorov (and possibly Sanheim or Morin) to the big club.

His cap hit of $5.25 million definitely hurts us in comparison to what we're getting out of him and/or need from him. That's potential money for another goal scorer on this team.

I have to add that we went 10-5-4 while Streit was out with that grotesque injury.

I definitely don't have an attachment to Streit, I'm fine with keeping him, fine with moving him.

Based on Hexy's discussion at the STH meeting, he kind of hinted that he expects 1 young guy to join in October, 1 to maybe join later in the season. Could that be to replace Streit when they move him at the TDL next season? That would make pretty good sense to me. I think Streit's value will probably be at it's highest at the TDL next season. Hopefully he doesn't regress too much by then though. IMO you get the least punishment from a tough contract when you acquire that contract at the TDL.

I agree with you here, but if we're in a playoff position come deadline time (which I expect to be), how do we explain unloading Streit for the stretch run and replacing him with a rookie? lol

... did everyone miss the (for example) in my post? I am pretty much on the fence when it comes to moving Streit, but his contract situation/salary retention prospect was the easiest to use for the scenario I was laying out.

That said, IMHO, if he is moved it is after the Flyers are certain that is skill set is covered in the rotation by MDZ, Ghost and the proverbial player to be named later. That would mean more likely at the deadline.

A fair point haha. They really shouldn't be looking to 'sell' at the deadline next year.

The bottom 6 include Laughton and Cousins. You want to see them go?

Cousins is slowly winning me over. He looks like he really could become a legit NHL player. I've never been a fan of Laughton and he continues to do nothing that makes me change my mind. His mediocre play and lack of any meaningful impact is being covered by the fact that most of the rest of the team is playing well at the moment.

I am not ready to write off Laughton yet. He is still learning the NHL and learning a new position. He has the wheels and knows enough to er on the side of defense first. He has the offensive tools, but he isn't flashy and he has never (accept with Cousins) been consistently paired with players with offensive skill.

Massive win tonight obviously. It's a damn shame though that the Isles and Pens had to go to OT. Perhaps the only way we can slow down the Pens is by beating them ourselves.

To me, the five remaining games against these two teams will go a long way toward deciding where we end up, but we could absolutely get that 2nd spot in the division if we really want it. The Rangers are getting beat by more desperate teams and we can definitely win the head to head matchups with the Pens and Isles.

Imagine that. The potential of having home ice in round one after we were left for dead a few weeks ago.
