I'll take points over size every single day of the week.

Plus, the Flyers average height was 6 foot .62 inches. Average weight, 196.6 lbs.

The Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins average height was 6 foot .62 inches. Average weight 196.4 lbs.

Ryan Nugent Hopkins is 6 foot 1 inch and 175 pounds.

(numbers based on NHL.com rosters and my knowledge of which players actually played consistently for the two teams. the math worked out shockingly well for my argument :))

IMO, the "Flyers need to add size" mantra is way overblown.
Overblown we don't need size?teams like Washington will keep knocking out the Couts of the world and we get to have our top goal scorer keep sitting in the box for 5 minutes at a time fighting the Wilsons of the world for sticking up for smaller teammates. Laughton just bouncing off defenseman out for the series.is another play that comes to mind.
If we aren't going to get bigger we certainly need to get faster because Pitts height and weight doesn't matter when you have that team speed like they do.

I think I may be the only guy on here who really wants Okposo. I see Louie Erikson as the favorite with the posters here, or that is what my belief is? As for RNH, his game may be different playing in Philly? Edmonton is a destination nobody wants to play.
Okposo ove RNH for me.

Simmonds averaged 1:48 PIMs/game for the regular season and only had 5 majors. That's not that much time to spend it the box for your leading goal scorer.

Also, hockey players get hurt. Getting bigger doesn't prevent them from getting hurt, Couturier is the biggest guy the Flyers have (in height and weight) and he's the one that got hurt.

I'd much rather focus on speed, skill, and scoring.

Simmonds was in the box in the playoffs maybe causing us a game and when you're in the playoffs anytime the leading scorer on your team is sitting in the box its never good

Couts being the biggest on a tiny team proves that we really need size.

Speed and skill if we go that route which im fine with lets do it and not sit around the middle of not being big enough to win or a team with enough speed and skill to win.

This is my primary point. The Flyers aren't a tiny team. They're 1/2" short of the NHL average and 6 pounds lighter than the NHL average. Couts is the same size as Matt Martin, they just play a different game.

And on the Matt Martin front, what's the difference between having Simmonds in the box not scoring, or having Matt Martin skate a regular shift and not scoring (career high 19 points in 80 games last season)?

Are you really trying to say having Simmonds in the box for five minutes is the same as having matt Martin in the box for five minutes. You have posted here a long time and I know you don't even believe that yourself because you are far more knowledgeable than that.

Maybe I am labeling it wrong about size. I want more players that play like Matt Martin on this team or have guys the size of Couts play more like Matt Martin. That's what I mean when I say we need size.

I'm saying I'd rather put up with Simmonds spending 5 minutes in the box than having Martin skate regular shifts. He brings size and can forecheck, which is helpful, but not as helpful as a 5'8 guy that can score 10-15 goals and barely hit anyone, or a 5-11 guy that plays fantastic defense. If you can find guys that can bring more than just size, physicality, and forechecking, I'm all for it. Of course, I'd rather have a 6-4 220 guy that can score 35 goals than a 5-7 175 guy that scores 35 goals.

All i'm saying is that IMO, the Flyers have bigger problems than size. They need goals. And at this point, I don't have much faith that any of the prospects are more than 15 goal guys, other than Konecny, but I don't see Konecny getting more than 25-30 consistently either. I do however, see a lot of good skating, some decent size, and some depth scoring. I have faith the prospect pool, as stocked, can fill out the bottom 6 with quality bottom 6 players. The top 6 is my concern and where i'd put my trade, FA, and draft focus.

Matt Martin types can be a benefit during the regular season with their physical presence and can help you get to the playoffs, but you don't win the Cup with Matt Martin types. You win the Cup with speed and skill. That's the rub.

:agree:
I would get someone like Michael Grabner if I were the Flyers.

Id love to have speed and skill but we don't have either except for a few players and I don't see Hextall running to sign or trade for guys that fit that bill.

I don't disagree with you but it's not about a players size so much you need a little bit of both but RNH is soft fragile won't go to the dirty areas that's why Edm doesn't win they have too much of that. I'd take a lessor player that will get his nose dirty to score when it counts in the playoffs. RNH, yakupov, etc..is barking up the wrong tree. Okposo will grind it out when needed and he's only a FA it's a no brainer. Briere wasn't tough he was small but he would do whatever it took to score that's the difference...

Anyone follow Jason Myrtetus on Twitter? Is he reliable? I know he's a radio guy in philly.

Tweeting about a potential trade, sanheim +, to move up in the draft. He thinks tkachuk is the target.

I started following him a few months ago, never experienced his silly season side. His details are awfully specific for a legit sports caster.

I don't follow him but what do you think the plus would be I hope not the #18 and which spot are we trading for?

Based on his tweet feed, sound like Sanheim + #18 to Edmonton for #4, draft Tkachuk. at least, that's what he's thinking.

I personally don't really like that deal. I'm not that enamoured with the guys in the 4-8 range or so. Of the bunch I like Nylander the most, but you don't need to go all the way to #4 for him. If we move up, I'd rather go to #9 or #10 and get Keller or Jost, in that order. Or throw the kitchen at Winnipeg for Laine.

I would consider Morin + #18 for #4, but I really like Sanheim. I think he's going to be a great player. I'm not as high on Morin.

I don't like Sanheim and the 18 I like Sanheim and a second round pick a lot more and I like Morin Read and a number 2 even better.

The deal to watch or at least look for that will tell us the most about the team moving forward?
1. Any veteran defenseman means that they are expecting one of Provorov or Sanheim or Morin to make the team even before the training camp opens.
2. Moving Matt Read for a none roster return will most likely mean that a. Schenn is getting some big $$ and b. there is another player in the system or a college free agent (they can't be signed until mid August at this point) who is expected to make the NHL roster.

AMac should be easier to move now as he looked decent last year. One vet dman has to go...

At best he is 3rd pairing while his contract says 1st or 2nd. He is ours for the foreseeable future.
