A Coyotes blogger proposed a trade of Lecavalier and Couturier for prospects RW Nick Merkley (2015 30th overall) and LW Brendan Perlini (2014 12th overall). A wouldn't normally waste time posting something like this, but we all know it's a slow news period...

I actually don't think that's a terrible deal. Merkley probably should've gone higher, and Perlini was a pretty legit prospect (not sure what he did last season though). For Coots and gets Lecavalier's contract off the books. I don't know that I'd do it, but that does seem like a pretty fair deal to me.

I just want the Flyers to stand pat now. If you can move Vinny without giving up much (no more than a 5th rounder), do it. If not, let's ride it out. See how it goes.

I guess it just matters on what you see Couterier's ceiling at. Looking back...it would have been nice if they just let him play a year in the minors to get his offensive game to where it was in juniors. I really like the kid but at this point he needs more balance in his game. It doesnt help that the flyers drafted so many similar plaers in the holmgren days (grinding centers, centers that can play wing...etc)

I just keep reading the Lecavalier situation only has one solution, being they are not going to buy him out. That solution is figure out how the hell they can use him effectively and I am hoping the new coach has better ideas thatn that dimwit Berube, which shouldnt be too hard.

I really like Couturier too. I just think he needs better line mates and better offensive situations to make it click. But I think the problem Couturier has had was more a bi-product of the Flyers really just not being very good 5 on 5. Even Giroux and Voracek scored ~50% of their points on the PP last year. That essentially means the Flyers goal scoring is heavily reliant on the top PP unit, if you're not a part of it, you're not going to put up many points.

53 5on4 vs. 138 5 on 5, so that's 28% of their goals came on the PP. Only Detroit and Airzona relied more on the PP. Most of those goals came with the 1st unit out there (Giroux had 37 PPP, 70% of the PPG for the team to give a ball park).

Not sure why I felt like doing all those stats haha, but long story short, the Flyers rely HEAVILY on their first PP unit. So Couturier struggling in the points department is as much a reflection on his game, as it is on the Flyers lackluster 5 on 5 play across the board. That will need to improve for the Flyers to make the playoffs.

Streit-MacDonald
Schenn-Gudas
Medvedev-Del Zotto
Manning-Schultz

Arbitrary lines, but I wonder who the odd man out it. Manning is easily waived and lost to Flyers' history, but everyone else seems a bit too good and a bit too close to be a 7th defenseman. I'd say Streit, Schultz, and Del Zotto are definite locks. Unless Medvedev is total trash I'd say he is too.

Schenn, Gudas, and MacDonald as fighting for the final two spots. Just out of personal preference I'd like to see Gudas dress and hit some people, though.

I think Luke Schenn is the odd man out - A-Mac will probably end up on the third pairing and I think Radko Gudas would be an important element to the defense with his hitting - I think he makes a bigger impact in that department than Luke Schenn

I think Gudas is the 7th dman. I think Schenn is just an all around better hockey player than Gudas. I'd like to see him hit as much as Gudas, but that's the only department Gudas is better in IMO.

Luke Schenn averaging 232 hits per year for the last five years which I would say is right around top ten in the league (i didn't look it up). If he is the better all around player how much more hitting would he have to do to be playing over Goudas?

Oh I think he plays over gudas regardless. I just think gudas is the more punishing hitter. Imo you don't need that anymore, so I play schenn and don't even think twice about it.

What I can say for absolute certainty is that I'd rather have Gudas at $990k than Schenn at $3.6m.

Yep when you factor in the cash it's a no brainer. Luke may get moved just because of this...

I read an article earlier (will post it if I can find it) that Schenn is the one they are trying to move to for the reasons stated above.

A couple of quick notes as we wait for the Flyers to sort out the glut on D:

Both L Schenn and Streit have partial No-trade clauses.

Apparently Medvedev is Waiver-exempt, according to war-on-ice.com

Philadelphia Flyers Contracts -- war-on-ice.com -- war-on-ice.com

If it comes to it, I would think Schenn would approve a trade at this point in time. He is in the last year of his contact. He may be the odd man out here and destroy any hopes of getting a decent deal as a FA by small minutes or being a healthy scratch. On another team, say Carolina, he would at least get the playing time to prove himself.
