Wings looking to host Winter Classic

The Pool is about 167 feet wide. A rink is 85 feet wide. So if they built temporary stands starting going into the pool istelf (its only 30 inches deep in the middle), they could probably get high enough to go up and above the tree line to have some decent-sized stands. It would be cool to have stands actually right up to the rink like at a normal hockey game instead of so far away from the boards as they have been in other Classics. And they could charge out the nose for those seats. Also, if they had a General Admission area, they could easily get 100,000+ into it to make up for the lost revenue from less seating in the stands.

Imagine the players coming out of the Lincoln Memorial to start the game. It would be so cool. I'd just love to see some of these Classics in some kind of "real" outdoor space instead of just in stadiums. A small lake in Minnesota, Central Park, The Mall, etc.

But I'm sure they'll probably just do it at FedEx Field or Nats' Park.

Here's a picture of a rink from the end of the ice (it's huge, not going to embed it here). I can't seem to find a good square shot of some stands that could be cut up.

sorry you're not gonna grow the game by throwing repeats on the ice every year.

Something that should be considered is always putting the game in a market where you know you can sell it out (obv) but then make the away team a team whose fan base/regional hockey support on that you're looking to grow

I honestly think NHL fucked up the past two years. It should have been Pitt/Philly and then NY/Wash. Those rivalries are alot more entertaining than Philly/NY and Pens/Caps.


Of course, I think the NHL fucked up huge by 1) putting Philly right back in it, and 2) not having them play NJ. I know I'm biased but if there was any year for NJ to be in there it was this one. 1) Possibly Marty's last year. 2) IMO the best American player in the NHL in Parise (granted, hes not doing so well this year but I blame that on #3). 3) the 15 (should have been 17 but Bettman hates the Devils) million dollar POS player who was the biggest free agent a couple of years ago. and 4) 19 year old rookie on the blueline! Anyone thats played the EA NHL series knows how much the young boys on the blue line are talked about.

Edit: Also, who the fuck honestly cares about the Rangers? I feel like if they didnt play in NY they wouldnt have any rivals. My GF doesnt like that train of thought

The host team picks their biggest rival to play (Player vote). But the weekend should also include the host team's farm team against the rivals top farm club, plus men's and women's college teams against their biggest rival.

Get some passion in those stands.

I think the past couple of years college teams have also played on the setup, but normally a week after the game, I'm not too sure though.

Good good call. Or maybe even keep it an in-state thing. NHL vs. NHL, farm vs. farm, and then two colleges close to the cities. Wings vs. Wild + U of M vs. Golden Gophers. Although your method might be better for ratings.
