You seem like one of those types where only the stuff they grew up on has value.
I wouldn’t exactly say it that way, but just about everything was better in the 80’s and 90’s was better than it is today. It’s just objectively true. That goes for music, movies, the Country…all of it. And it certainly applies to the NBA. Is there anyone on here who thinks the NBA is better now than it was in the Bird, Magic, Jordan era? Do YOU think it is?

I was thinking of Christian Welp. Another big 7 footer that played at Washington with
DETLEF SHREMPF
I remember Welp. He was another Big White Stiff that was going to be great but never was. The Celtics had another memorable version of that type of guy in Eric Montross.

It’s not “objectively true”. You’re being a cliche. I’m Gen X too I love all that stuff too but the people who grew up in the 60s and 70s or 00s and 10s think their childhood stuff was awesome too.

Kareem is not the example you want.

He was highly skilled and he could move his feet. If he grew up in today’s era you don’t think he would be able to shoot the 3?

My guess is Kareem would be a more athletic Jokic if he played today. Might even be more dominant.

Guys like Shaq would be hurt by modern rules.

Hakeem, Kareem, David Robinson, Ewing etc would still be great players. Because they were skilled enough to be focal points of an offense while also being forces defensively (maybe not so much Ewing on that one).
But to me, the big man 3 is what is killing this for me. Just exhausting of spread the floor and a guy who is on your team at 7'2 playing against a team who plays small, probably biggest player advertised at 6'10 but is 6'6 and the teams refuse to just feed the post and let the guy get 40. Its get out of the way and let our smalls drive to the basket so we can pay them 50 million and they can get 100 million dollar shoe deals. So Kareem being Kareem and being fed the ball with no hand checking rules could score 30 or 40 a night. But no doubt, half the offensive sets they would have him lining up in the spread floor so a guard might get to the basket, and if Kareem is down there, that means theres a defender down there. That is the evolution of the NBA. To me it sucks as hard as people thinking they are evolved enough that they can text while driving a car.

The Jordan bulls were always a team who constantly ran the offensive set to the post the first plays of the game. They always got away from it, but still started it the right way. Awesome video out there about Jordan coaching up longley, tells him to dominate, they feed him the ball in the first quarter and he gets 12 points 4 rebounds 2 blocks. He ended the game with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Then the players who I never heard of getting max dollars just because the worlds best players are making that much was another nail in the coffin for me. The "big 3 era" where I was lucky enough to have Jerry Reinsdork running the bulls so Leroy and Wade would not sign because they knew he would not go over the cap to get their other buddy, and also them thinking Derrick Rose after a MVP season was not enough to be part of a big 3 refused to sign here. If that happened I would have stopped watching even sooner.

The problem is the NBA itself. Rule changes have allowed the game to become a backyard cry fest.

Players, even the best guards cannot dribble a basketball more than five time without cupping the ball. I made every kid I coached dribble the ball without allowing their hand to go under it.

On a drive to the basket, certain players are allowed to take three or four steps. Lebron, Kwhai, The Greek are just a few. Travelling is rarely called unless a player actually carries the ball two steps. Players today have to take at least two steps.

A layup used to be when a player bounced the ball off the backboard into the hoop. I watched a game the other night where at least eight layups were missed because the ball was bounced off the back of the rim.

Basically, the game has become bastardized. No one teaches kids the rules of the game and every kid plays street ball and its become accepted.

The game sucks.

I went to a Bucks/Hawks game in 2019 that set the NBA record for combined 3pt attempts: 116

Holy shit there's over a minute more of this? I'm out at 36 seconds.
I couldn’t believe it. Just an endless procession of terrible shots and bricks. Nobody even looking for a good shot.

Cmon now.

At least half of the looks were good shots. Some great shots.

They just didn’t go in.

An inside out 3 from the top of the key is almost as good as it gets in terms of shot quality. Right below an uncontested layup and a corner 3.

What’s the average percentage for 3 pointers in the NBA? Is it under 40%? I don’t think that’s a great shot, if so. For some elite shooters like Reggie Miller or Dale Ellis, yes, but not for most.

It is like 36% I believe.

What would you say about a 2 point shot that a player hits at a 50% clip?

Is that a good shot?

Oh man, you're about 25 years behind every basketball analytics study lol.

I think the Load Management bullshit has turned a lot of fans off. Also, having to listen to bleeding heart Libs like Kerr and Pop bitch and preach to everyone each time they pic up a Mic. People hear enough of that shit on political sites, they don't need it in their Hoop watching

I’d say that an option featuring approximately 2/3 of shots being missed is a shitty product. But that’s just me. And that’s before we get into the endless free throw-timeout-replay review cycle at the end of the game.

I know that the analytics disagree with me and I fully accept that. But it’s a shitty product(and from the clip I posted, is defense even a thing any longer in the NBA?). It reminds me how baseball fell in love with “launch angle” and strikeouts went through the roof and there was no longer any baseball being played.
