On Dan Patrick this morning, they mentioned getting rid of the 3-point line altogether. Said that it would make the game better.

Not sure I agree with getting rid of it...but I do think they need to find a way to remove some of the emphasis on it.

Yeah, because everybody playing zone defense with nothing to help stretch the floor would be WAY better than what we have now. Changing the NBA to early 80's NCAA basketball is NOT the answer. Get rid of the shot clock and let's have teams run the 4 corners offense because that will be a joy to watch!

How would de-emphasizing the 3, turn the game into 80's NCAA basketball and who said anything about getting rid of the shot clock?

I don't want to see the 3 removed altogether as some have suggested, I just want to see teams de-emphasize it so that they aren't jacking up 3's when they aren't hitting it.

@The Q posted a shot of Memphis vs. Boston...with less that 2 minutes left in the game, Memphis was 15 of 32 which is right in the range of where you want to be, both in attempts and makes. Boston was 17 for 56...that's a team continuing to shoot 3's even though they aren't falling.

I was half-joking (the shot clock part). As far as the 3 line goes, if you lower it from 3 points to 2 points then there's going to be less pressure on defenses to close out on shooters from distance and it will turn the NBA back into a post up/drive basketball league with collapsing zones. I don't see that as an improvement because we've seen that before. I mean they fucking moved the 3 point line IN at one point to increase scoring.

The zone wasn't allowed in the NBA until the 2001-02 season. So, prior to that, there were no collapsing zones and the game was fine in the 80's even after the 3 was implemented.

Again, I'm not saying get rid of the 3, I'm saying de-emphasize it. I don't know as there's a way to use the rule book to de-emphasize it as I don;'t think you can, for example, limit the number of 3's a team is allowed to take.

As I posted earlier, I'd like to see teams let success be their guide when shooting the 3. If it's falling, keep shooting it...if not, work for shots in the paint or mid-range, then go back to the 3 later and see if you have success then.

In the game I mentioned upthread...if Boston was down 7...maybe if they quit shooting 3's and looked to score in the paint of mid-range, maybe they're winning the game at that point despite not shooting well from 3.

It’s weak, the flopping, the violations they don’t call ever. Takes less skill damn near with amount of shit they get away with.

Feel better now?

I think that instead of moving the 3 point line back, they could simply give every team 15 attempts a game that count 3 points for a make. After that, you can jack up 30 more, but you're only getting 2 points for them.

Make it 20 and youve got my vote.

Yeah, 20 works. Just not 45-50
you guys must love replay because you know guys will be calling for it after every miss saying their toe was on the line so it wasn't a three attempt.

When a team shoots better than their opponent from 3pt range, they have something like a 70% win rate.
When they shoot the 3 better by 5% or more, the win rate goes up near 80%
The shot is just becoming too important in relation to other skills.

But its here to stay.

I would argue for minor changes such as move it out 6-12 inches and have the arc stop short of the endline.
Maybe have it turn at the 'foul-shot line extended' and go straight to the side boundary.

Make that a judgement call again and non reviewable. The point is to make the game more watchable. Even better
