It's a Spanish nickname he's had since before anybody outside of Mallorca had ever heard of him.

"Nole" sounds a little silly to us, too, but not to the Serbs who gave him that nickname as he gained local fame. Kolya for Davydenko, Vika for Azarenka...all of them originated when these players were kids.
