Names have been floating around. Byron Scott, Steve Kerr, Lionel Hollins and even Coach K are a few of them.

Who would you be most interested in?

Byron Scott is a Laker great. He has plenty of NBA coaching experience and even made it to the finals twice. He's got the respect of the fans, and with a few players too (even played with Kobe in the mid/late 90s for a year I believe). He's the type of guy that won't just to it for the money, but for the pride too.
His win percentage is only 44% but he had the unfortunate task of taking over Cleveland after Lebron left so that drags the number down a bit.

In an ideal world, i'd love to have Phil back, or even Coach K but that's not going to happen. Lionel Hollins would be a great addition too. He knows how to handle big men and plays good D. God knows why he got fired after leading the Grizzlies to the Western Conference Finals.

I'm willing to see how Scott would do though. Start him off with a 2 year contract with an option for a 3rd.

Well Steve Kerr is going to be the next head coach of the Phil-run Knicks. Hollins is considering retirement. The pickin's are getting slimmer by the day. They may have to dip into the college ranks this time around or raid one of the top pro staffs such as Greg Popovich's assistants or maybe somebody from OKC or the Bulls.

Until he's officially signed by the Knicks: I am keeping my front row seat on the Steve Kerr Bandwagon. After that, in no particular order:

Lionel Hollins: I still don't know why he was let go in Memphis. Raw deal there. He was 415-214 as the Grizzlies coach. Does he still want to coach?

Jeff Van Gundy: A very good coach who has had a good deal of success. However, he seems happy being a broadcaster. Also, he's been away from the sidelines for a long time. How will he relate to today's players?

George Karl: He would bring instant credibility to the bench. However, he was fired in the same season that he won Coach of the Year, because his teams have been great regular season teams, but poor playoff teams. Was it the rosters he was given? Or was it his coaching?

Byron Scott: He would be a popular choice among fans and with the Lakers "Return of Showtime" desires, a guy who was actually a big part of Showtime, might not be the worst choice. Also, it's rumored that he could lure Kyrie Irving. However, he also had 2 teams mutiny on him. What has he learned from that and how will he apply it?

The Lakers need to be very careful no matter who they hire. They are beginning to look like they have a coaching carousel going on and that doesn't speak to the kind of franchise stability that is attractive to top flight FA's.

They do have a coaching carousel going on. It is obvious and everyone knows that short buss is the problem. Even the likes of Andy Roddick and loudmouth Gary Peyton on FoxSports Live!!

I'd like Rambis to stay as an assistant if possible.

I trust Mitch though. It turned out the late great Dr Buss actually wanted D'antoni in the first place. I think if it were up to Mitch we would have had Phil.

Nonetheless, it's going to be the most interesting off season since I became a laker fan!

Retaining Madsen as an assistant is a good option also.

I actually bought his jersey back in 2002 just for his dancing skills. It was on sale too!

No old retreads. Maybe B. Scott. The Lakers could likely sign Irving in 2015 if Byron is head coach.

My #1 pick is Kevin Ollie. He is highly respected by NBA players, especially "Mr. Unreliable" Kevin Durant.

I'm on the fence with Ollie. I don't know much about him as a coach, only as a player. I don't know what his style is.

I am quite sure they can find an assistant on the staffs of Greg Popovich in San Antonio or Tom Thibodeau in Chicago who would jump at the chance of being the Lakers' HC and would bring a winning attitude, sound basketball principles, and great D to the job.

Ollie is an interesting idea. However, I agree with Shaqdaddy, How much do we really know about him and his coaching style? Winning a title in college does not guarantee any kind of success in the NBA. If it did, Pitino and Calipari would still be NBA coaches.

I'd rather gamble on a young unknown than a old known who hasn't won titles.

I'm not against the idea of Ollie or even Calipari, especially since they seem to be popular among NBA players, because it would make the Lakers even more attractive to FA's. The problem is, if the NBA isn't for him, we could be looking for another coach in 2-3 years on the heels of 4 coaches in 5 years.

That's Clippers level instability.

It looks as though the Lakers are moving in the direction of college. Ollie and Calipari are the primes suspects for now.
