Was just having an interesting debate about the #1 pick, and thought I'd start this and see how the board feels about it. I went with LT. Protecting your QB is the most important thing IMO.

Why do you say that? (Just expounding. Not flaming anyone's opinion here. Just wanting legit discussion.)

I went with DE/OLB as Denver just showed us how important getting pressure on a QB is...

hehe, no seriously,

Because it's the QB of the defense.

If I am running a 3-4? NT.

Nose does make a huge difference in the game. Because more often than not, the Center is the worst athlete on the O line, and can be exploited. I like that pick. It's interesting. And the Nose is where it starts when it comes to stopping the run.

There's just so much more you can do with the Dontari Poe and Prime Ngatas of the world than what you can do with a generic DE or DT. It gives the defense so much more control over the game than it otherwise would have. Absolutely critical when trying to coach in game that they are playing "your" game and not the other way around. Sometimes you meet a Brady or Manning and that goes to all hell, but that's why you invest in more than just a NT. Those dancing bears are rarer than elite QB's, imo.

Depends on the team. For the Texans it's probably DE since Watt is so dominant. If you're the Patriots it's probably ball boy or video recording specialist.

Hmm. That's true. Looking over the Broncos' roster, Brandon Marshall was the starting MLB. 102 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 1 INT. Ranked 36th overall in tackles. I believe Von Miller is their best defender, and the secondary gets more love than the linebackers do. And there are some teams where the safeties call the plays.

3-4 two gap DE's are normally not too impactful outside of just maintaining their gap and stopping the run. What makes Watt Unique is he turns a position that's supposed to have meh sack totals if your lucky into 20 sacks.

True. I'm just saying that when you have a guy that is that dominant, the position becomes more important to your success as a team. If that makes sense.

In this scenario, we're basically saying you can have any player in the league. and all you have is your franchise QB so far.

Somebody posted an article not too long ago about how it usually takes offensive lineman a bit longer than other players to start having immediate impact. That might be because offensive lineman coming out of these spread hurry-up offenses in college are less prepared for the NFL than ever. If you could get a dominant defender at MLB or DT I'd probably go with that. Somebody like Luke Kuechly, Bobby Wagner, or Aaron Donald who can start immediately and make their presence felt.

This... without a doubt.

QB of the defense, and arguably one of the primary pieces to build a defense around.

But what about a hybrid safety like Chancellor who plays like a linebacker, but can also get down the field with 4.4 speed and play the ball in the air? That's more valuable to me. In this era of passing offenses? I believe secondary is more important. The prime example of this being the Seahawks. They built their defense around the greatest safety combination of all time. Having Thomas and Chancellor, the rest of the defense has a ton more freedom than they would if they had just average play out of their safeties. And like I pointed out before, some teams have their safety call the plays now.

I actually agree. On Watt. Except he's #1 cause they have no QB.

So it's all about the team you have and it's strengths. Or it's weaknesses.

You look at the Pats right now and it just might be Nate Solder covering Brady's blind side. Forcing Volmer to go left to fill the void.

Which makes it that much more important to find the gems out there that aren't undersized, and can make the jump quickly. It's known that the D line as the advantage over the O line because they are better athletes, and they can do more and have more freedom on the line. I'd much rather have a disciplined LT who is big enough to run the ball behind, but also athletic enough to be able to hold up in pass protection.
