..when a non-conference champion made their way into the CFP to get another crack at the team that beat them in a CCG?
2016
So a team that didn't even play for a CCG made it into the CFP?1. That has yet to happen. The only 2 nonchamps that made the CFP were 16 tOSU and 17 Bama. Neither played in their CCG. 16 tOSU’s loss was to PSU, and PSU was not in the CFP, hence no crack at them period. Bama and UGA has not played prior to the CFPCG, so again the scenario you suggest did not occur.
While this gets repeated all the time, the fact is ANY team that loses gets “second chances” when it plays in a CFP or BCSCG. Alabama isn’t the only team that got in without winning its conference. In addition to 16 tOSU, so did 01 NU and 03 OU. All 3 of those got in INSTEAD of their conference champions that beat them head to head. 01 NU lost to their champ 62-36 and 03 OU lost to theirs 35-7, both in their FINAL games of the season.
Yea UCF didn’t beat LSU’s second string they totally belonged last year guys!I know that is what we all want.

RIP @Great_Dayne12-1 Wisconsin didn't make it in 2017. Lost CCG to 11-2 Ohio State. Best loss for a 1 loss team that didn't make the CFP
Is it because their best win is over a tepid 7-3 Texas A&M?
Is it because the cumulative records of their opponents (including 10-0 LSU) is 48-54?
Is it because they are getting ready for their late-season FCS cupcake?
