right now the sharks have 18M available under the cap in 2012 if the cap stayed the same. That's enough to resign cooch at 4 yrs 16M, burns at 5 yrs 30M, and still have 8M left with the top 6 forwards intact, the top 5 D signed, and the #1 goalie. that 8M would only be needed for a 3rd and 4th line, and to resign braun (who could have a great year and still wouldn't cost more than 2M most likely. Basically, dougie is set up to be in the exact same position next summer as he is right now.

The only difference is that he should have a couple rooks emerge, and boyle, jumbo and patty will be another year older and slower.

Of course, predicting one year in the future is next to impossible, so we're just kinda along for the ride.

Not if he's planning on adding to the forward group via this years UFA market as he's seems to be indicating. I have a hard time believing that any respectable UFA forward who could help the team would sign a one year deal. He'd basically have to stand pat with what they have now for your scenerio to be true. It also means they couldn't trade for any players that are signed past this year.

UFA's I'd love in no particular order:

Jussi Jokinen
Brooks Laich (although he's likely out of the Sharks price range)
Scotty Upshall
Ville Leino
Michael Handzus

so if he signs a guy to 2M per year for multi-years then he'll have 6M left, but he'll have another 3rd line forward. it's basically the same team situation.

You think one guy at 2m is all he needs or will do? He needs either a legit top six and a solid 3rd liner which will cost in the $6-$7m cap range or two tweener 2nd/3rd liners which will be in the $5m range. Raises to Burns and Couture will total about $6.0-$7.0m depending on how big an A-hole Salcer (Burns Agent) decides to be. He's notorious for demanding above top dollar for his clients.

Something else to keep in mind is this is the last year of the CBA and there is no certainty that the cap will increase. There are a lot of rumblings from GM's/Owners that both the upper and lower caps have been increasing to fast. I don't expect the upper cap to decrease I just wouldn't bank on it increasing.

On a side note, kind of related to this discussion, we may hear something on White pretty soon.

Doug has to go all out and get the right players to fill out the Sharks roster. This is going to be his last year, and he knows it if the Sharks dont win the cup.

Anything other than "thanks for the help last year.. see ya!" will shock the shit out of me... so hopefully you know something that we don't and you didn't just mean "White signs with Detroit for $4M/year" or something obvious like that.. :p

The same contact who let me in on the Seto deal illuded to White possibly being re-signed. No details on this one just the impression I got from talking to him.

I could see White re-signing because he's sick of moving around team to team so much over the past 2 seasons. I can also see him going for the cha-ching because he's in his prime and this upcoming contract will most likely be the most lucrative of his career.

He's not the ideal dman I'd like to see Dougie sign though. I, too, would rather him go for a dman who excels defensively rather than offensively.

how can he re-sign white unless he trades either murray or pickles? White will cost at least 4M unless he takes a big discount. Otherwise, that would leave dougie with just 4M to round out 6 forwards. Basically, we would have no third line. Granted though, Adding white to the current D would sure bring great depth and a really potent offensive push from the blue line. I suppose if dougie could get rid of niity and mitchel's contracts, then the flexibility would return. If he is healthy, I wouldnt mind giving stalock the back up job. Really, just burying Niity would give dougie enough cash to get a legit 3rd liner.

Interesting options abound...

Laich signs with the Caps for 6 years supposedly. No word on terms.

You know what, the more I think about white, the more I like dougie trying to keep him. Defensive depth is so so important and every year at least one of your top 6 D is injured just about all the time (not the same guy necessarily, but someone). Also, with such a shortage of premium D on the market right now, the trade market should be sellers one come deadline time. Dougie might be able to turn a guy like pickles into a legit top 6 forward later in the year if scoring depth becomes a problem.

However, with white in the lineup along with burns, I think the increased production from the defense will make up for a weaker 3rd line. Boyle, burns, white, demers as your top 4 is legit especially when you figure pickles and murray as the other 2 with braun on reserve. The should could have 3 double-digit goal scoring defensemen. That is alot of goals and would quite possibly make up for the lack of forward depth.

I dont think it would be bad at all if he did, Pickles,Murray and Demers as your shut down guys, It would look alot like the detroit defense minus the lidstrom obvoiusly

I buy that. Forget skill and just go for forechecking speed and physicality on the bottom 6. Ian White is "here" and the Sharks already have his attention, so to speak. Re-signing him may be easier than courting a new UFA who has the interest of other teams.

I think it's going to come down to what does Dougie want more, because he can't have it all. Either he fills out his third line with a couple experienced skaters, but goes with Braun (or another rookie) as a regular. Or he gets an experienced dman (White or someone else), but goes with youth on the 3rd line.
