I just threw out Henne's name. I think if we're looking to change the QB, we should be looking for someone that can make a significant difference. Could Sanchez be an upgrade? Yeah, I don't think he is, but he MIGHT be. He wouldn't be much of one though, and would ultimately be a placeholder. Same with Henne.

If I'm running this team the only QB I'm showing any interest in that is not in the draft and is not Alex Smith is Peyton Manning. If Manning's healthy, he significantly upgrades our team and allows us to have a few years (probably 3 tops) where we are a legitimate Super Bowl contender and can groom a young QB to replace him (be it Kaepernick or a draft pick this year or next, even 2013 possibly).

If we were to add a healthy Manning. I think we automatically become a legitimate SB contender. Right now we're considered to be the top of the second tier in the NFC (possibly the only team in the second tier) behind GB and NO. Why? Because there is no way our offense can keep pace with them.

If we add Manning, with the defense we have now, our offense can suddenly keep pace (look at all the warts he hid in Indy).

If we were to add Manning, I would absolutely look to add a dynamic WR in the first round, even if that means trading up. If we can re-sign Rodgers and Goldson with the addition of Manning, we're a WR away from being very dynamic on both sides of the ball.

I couldn't find a single word that I disagreed with...

The window of opportunity to build a perpetually dominant team (10+ years) is probably at or near its widest point, and thus time is of the essence to find (or develop) our Peyton Manning, our Drew Brees, etc.

Without 'that' QB we ride our defense until it begins to fail (maybe 2-3 years) and then repeat the process all over again. If a healthy Manning became available and had only three season left, even if they are declining seasons, I think we would have to ring that bell.

i think we all agree that we want something better than smith, but the grass isn't always greener.

bringing in henne would be a decent move because he'd be a back up, then he can battle kap for the #2 role. bringing in sanchez would be like hitting the rewind button on smith to say, his 2nd year

our longterm solution at qb might be playing college or even high school.

I hear what your sayin' Iguana, but the problem with that strategy is by the time he gets here, we will then be trying to build both an offense and defense again - IMO, and as I just said to Imac, time is of the essence to lay the foundation for a another run at 10+ years of being an elite team. We need 'that' QB asap.

Speaking of Sanchez, Tannenbaum: Sanchez is our starting QB - Jets Blog - ESPN New York

In his third NFL season, the 25-year-old Sanchez established career highs in both passing yards (3,474) and touchdowns (26). But he completed just 56.7 percent of his throws, compiled a passer rating of 78.2, had a career-worst 26 turnovers -- including 18 interceptions -- and failed to guide the team to the playoffs for the first time in his young career.

26 turnovers, ouch!! Jets are in the playoffs if the "Sanchise" protects the football.

i don't see any quick solutions. we'll have to develop somebody. clausen was someone i was high on and a couple years behind smith could be what he needs. not to mention kap has the physical tools to be a great qb, but he wouldn't be the first big arm to do nothing.

once every 5 years or so an excellent qb drops to the 20s. we might have to wait for that next guy to drop, unless we can fluke out a late pick or sign someone.

When the fuck did I say anything about "all things being equal?"

Simply put, if Harbaugh is the QB whisperer that can make Mark Sanchez a decent QB, let's give him a good QB to work into a great QB.

Why settle for below average if greatness is in play?

My mistake, obviously. I think I meant Crimsoncrew.

Ha! You just experienced the wrath of IMAC. Welcome to the club!

I like the Peyton Manning idea.

One other QB I would pursue this offseason, if he becomes available):

Drew Brees is scheduled to be a FA. If he gets franchised, that wouldn't dissuade me from making an offer.

He and Manning are the only two QBs that somewhat realistically may be available whom I would pursue.

i don't see brees in anything but a saints uniform next year. manning is a huge question mark. i highly doubt the colts will let him go for a conditional draft pick that depends on his ability to stay healthy

What would you be willing to give up to get either of them?

They can't trade him.

For Manning, since the Colts can't trade him, I would give him 3 or 4 years at about 15M per year.

For Brees, I'd make him the highest paid QB in the league over 5 or 6 years.

If New Orleans franchises him, then I'd gladly give them 2 first round picks for him in addition to the contract.

Oh, I'd stand my ground if I had actually been referencing the correct poster. Though I never actually knock anyone out, so to speak. Plus, I think I incorrectly said I agreed with Imac (when I meant Crimson) so I'm not sure why I got his wrath.

Off topic, but doesn't this look more like old man Favre than Popeye? :popeye: Maybe a bit of Bradshaw?

Sorry, that's what i meant. I can't imagine either player not being franchised at the very least. 15 mil. per year sounds about right for either of them. I'm just not sure we have any way of getting either of them without adding at least 1 true number 1 receiver.

If I didn't know better I'd think you were decscribing the career of Alex Smith prior to this season.........to a T.

Smith had cut out the stupid mistakes by midseason last year. Sanchez hasn't done that yet, and that's probably the biggest problem I have with him. Sanchez's accuracy issues are also worse than Smith's. While Smith is inaccurate compared to other pro QBs, he's accurate compared to Sanchez, whose best season is below 57% in completion percentage.

While it's a tired refrain, I feel compelled to mention the constant turnover at OC for Smith, though. Smith never had anything resembling stability until this season. Sanchez has had stability, albeit with a defensive coach. He persists in making questionable - at best - decisions frequently.

smith is just getting back on track after his shoulder injury. smith is still on track for a rich gannon style career. sanchez is a sub 80 passer rating qb even tho he's on a fairly talented offense. he should improve next year, but overal i think he's overrated.

I can't agree with that. He showed no ill effects from the injury last season. Even in 2009 he was apparently fine health-wise.

Manning can't be franchised. If a player is cut, the team can't turn around and franchise him.

Brees will get more than 15M. He'll be closer to 20. Brady's extension in 2010 averages 18M per year. Manning's extension for this year was the same but with 69 in the first 3 years.

Vick signed a 5 year/80M (16 per year).

I suppose we could get away with 5 year 95M. Of course, the guaranteed is ultimately what matters.
