That's what I was thinking. If he was gonna do it... would've been better to do it right away and maybe come away with a better off-season though.

You can't rush a decision like that, though, so if he hadn't decided... can't blame him.

The ironic thing is while everyone ripped Lebron and Durant.

Had Bosh and Horford agreed to sign with their teams (CLE and OKC respectively) neither would've left.

Durant might have more pure talent - but give me RW anyday of the week.

Durant is mentally weak and is just not an alpha....JAMES WORTHY would be his ideal role.

Considering James Worthy stepped up in big games, (hence the nickname Big Game James) and is a hall of famer. I'd say that's a pretty good role.

Yep very stupid move. Especially when you never been a FA before. Not a wise move at all

Not necessarily. It only delays his entry into the FA market by 1 season. It makes him look good from a loyalty perspective while allowing OKC the chance to make some moves to improve the roster around him.

He makes more money, makes himself the hero in OKC and only delays his FA by 1 year. Seems pretty smart to me.

If he can get Blake to join him, it looks really smart.

Interesting Westbrook signed with the Thunder long-term. He's a good player and all but Durant is better.

Valid point but let's say he leaves in the summer of 2018, I don't OKC fans will care about his loyalty at all.

Not long term at all. Its basically one more year. He can opt out in 2 years

I'm not so sure about that. By re-signing, he puts the pressure on OKC's FO to make moves to improve the roster. If they don't do that, then perhaps the fans react more like Minnesota fans did when KG went to the Celtics. They still loved KG and blamed the FO.

Durant is a soft little girl.

all though im not surprised you two are pissed.

CROSS another FA off the list.

doesn't look like Pat is getting a meeting with Russ. lol. Not that i ever thought that was a serious possibility, but if RW went to Miami i would have thrown up.

pissed about what? it's YOU who are terrified that he he's standing in your team's way...

TRY not so hard to hide your agenda...

KD is the better player without a doubt. But there has been questions about his leadership skills, he doesn't need to be the leader for the Warrriors so that's probably good for him.

yeah, not so sure it's all that important for him to be the alpha...

Westbrook just might be the best athlete to ever play in the league, he's definitely in the conversation. I'm not a huge fan of Griffins game but I do think there is a better average chance that he comes to OKC after this season. No doubt that would be a fun team to watch. Think about a lineup including Westbrook, Griffin, Oladipo, Adams, Kanter, etc.

All I want for Christmas is for Westbrook to drop 50 points on the Warriors and win the game.

so if Westbrook left or got traded after next year, his contract would be in the neighborhood of 5-130-140 right?

This almost feels like Jimmy Butler with the bulls. Even though he is max now, he is going to be one of the cheaper superstars in the league and very easy to trade.

But with his history of knee issues and his reckless abandon he plays with, I am surprised he signed now.

I'm still kind of surprised by this just because he seems like he was born to be a FA. Alhough I can also see Russ reveling in the hero role for Oklahoma City, and the money was right.

This isn't as surprising as some people think. Here's why:

Russell Westbrook was up for free agency this year, and would be a 9 year veteran. With that comes the second highest max salary available to him under the CBA. The Super max comes as a veteran with 10 years of NBA service.

What Russell has basically done is delay his free agency by 1 year, so that he can opt out after next year and become a free agent at the 10 year point, where he could command the maximum salary.

Basically what Russ did was delay his free agency by one year, gain and extra 9M in salary during that time and when he becomes a free agent will be able to command the absolute maximum salary possible without having to sign 1 and 1 deals to get it done.

This is why Durant signed a 1 and 1 with the Warriors. It's because he's currently at the 9 year mark and next year can max out at his full value with 10 years of service. It's also why Harden signed his extension with the Rockets because by the time his contract expires, he'll also have the 10 years of experience for the Max salary.

Happy for the Thunder fans that they get to enjoy an additional year of Westbrook. In the worst case scenario, with an extra year under contract, he becomes even more desirable because he won't be as short of a rental, and the team trading for him can retain bird right and offer him the most money.
